Episode 1

The Veteran Mercenary

Ha! It is the traitorous prince and his band most foul! Mark me well: today's sunrise shall be the last you ever see! Hell, that's a whole lotta goons. We're gonna be boxed in at this rate. Let's back off. There's no reason for us to fight when the odds are against us. If you intend to leave with all of your limbs attached, I suggest you carry out that plan with all haste. Who the—?! No idea, but I'm thinkin' it's the right call for us to beat feet outta here! Let's hurry! Good idea. ...Hrah! Gyaaa! It's a log trap! Those logs divided the Empire's forces! I'm guessin' it's the work of that voice from before. Regardless, I think it's given us a spark of new life! Right. Time to strike back, everyone! Hraaaagh! Someone's fighting over there! Is he the man who set off that log trap? Whoever he is, he's on our side— so let's just focus on makin' these imperials take a long dirt nap! R-retreat! All troops, fall back! Ran away, did they? Fine by me. They can think long on the value of the lives they yet have left. I assume those logs were your doing? Thank you—we were in a real bind back there. Your thanks are unnecessary, Prince Euden. Hang on. VICTOR?! Is that you?! Ah, Ranzal—the Arc in the Storm. I haven't seen you since that time you were hired by Baron Djorden. You know this man, Ranzal? We fought together a couple'a times back in my old merc days. But I heard your current band of mercenaries was annihilated, Victor. ...... Annihilated?! Yeah, I heard it from a merc bud of mine. Victor here was leadin' a band called the Shadewolves what had an unfortunate run-in with the Empire. But there's darker rumors, too—like about how the leader of the band won't die, and now spends his nights huntin' down imperials on some quest for revenge. Rumors are just that, Arc: rumors. It's not like you to fall for tall tales. Yes, we sustained heavy losses at the Empire's hand, but the Shadewolves have not lost yet. The battle isn't over. And what battle is that, exactly? You against the whole damn Empire? Alone or not, so long as I live on, so do the Shadewolves—and I swear on the honor of my comrades that I will carry this fight to the ends of the earth. Urgh... Hmm. It seems we have a straggler. One moment—this won't take long. Wait, no! You can't! The Shadewolves whisper to me—and they tell me to leave no Empire servant alive. S-stop... Mercy... And what was your answer when my comrades asked the same of you? Th-that wasn't me... I didn't touch 'em! And yet you serve the Empire all the same, which means your life is forfeit. Stop! What is this? I thought the Empire was your enemy as well. They are—but I still won't take an opponent's life when they are ready and willing to surrender. And what would you have me do with this man, hmm? Bear in mind that he came here specifically to take your lives. I won't raise my sword against a helpless enemy. ...Soldier, gather those who can still move and return to the Empire. Th-thank you... You didn't even take him prisoner...? Hmm. It seems the rumors of your nature are true. Fine, I will not interfere. Now, Prince, I have a proposal: I want you to hire the Shadewolves. Ain't the Shadewolves just you now? I may be alone, but my work—and the Shadewolves' legacy—will speak for itself. I've seen your strength. A powerful ally like you is always welcome in our ranks. But let me make something clear: We are not seeking to take the life of every imperial soldier we encounter. I will not abide you attacking helpless enemies, or those who wish to surrender. And if they only pretend to be helpless? What would you have me do then? We'll just figure that out as a team whenever we get to it. That kind of responsibility is shared with all of us—not just given to one person. If you agree to these terms, then you are welcome to fight at our side. Rumors Abound

Pardon me, Your Highness, but might I borrow your ear for a moment? What is it, Elly? I went to the village earlier to do some shopping, and I fear I heard some rather disturbing rumors about Victor. Like what? People are saying the leader of the Shadewolves yet lives, and that he uses cruel and brutal methods to enact revenge on Empire soldiers. Heard somethin' like that m'self. You did? Yep. Folks say he torched an entire village what just to kill a few imperial soldiers. Apparently this man also poisoned a well, killing an imperial garrison along with the entire village where they were stationed. He's killing entire villages of people just to get to the soldiers?! I can't believe Victor would resort to such horrific methods. Far as I knew, the Shadewolves had a code what strictly forbade 'em from hurtin' civilians. But this stuff... It has long been said that a thirst for revenge can change a person. I don't want these stories to be true. I want to believe in Victor. Then what say we head out and see if they're just a bunch'a words in the wind? How do you propose we do so? Pull up a chair, boss. I got me an idea... Forgive my dropping in unannounced, but is this the home of Tomas's parents? A'yup, I'm his papa. And who're you? My name is Victor, and I am the leader of the Shadewolves. Oh, are ya now? I'm afraid I come bearing ill news. 'Bout m'son? We already know. Word travels fast these days, even all the way out here. You have my most sincere apologies and condolences, sir. I wish to— All the bowin' and scrapin' in the world won't bring m'boy back, so ya might as well lift yer head. Where is my son?! Go back inside, dear. I know who you are! You stole my son from me! Is that your way of atonin' fer this? M'son is dead, but you ain't yet. Might think of treatin' that precious gift with a bit more care in the future. The Empire stole everything from me. Any reason I may have had for living is now dedicated to seeing them pay. I got me a reason for livin' too— that little boy. He's all I got left of the son what was stolen away. And that boy'll never be a man like you. He'll never fight for coin. That's a promise. Now be on yer way, and never darken our door again. I understand. Farewell. ...So Victor went to the home of a fallen comrade and gave money to the grieving family? The Shadewolves were known for their brotherhood. Hell, that kinda pack unity gave 'em the name in the first place. I'd fight like a demon for a man like that, I tell ya what. I wasn't very enthusiastic about the idea of following Victor like this, spying on what he's doing... But at least we saw he's not the inhuman monster some of the rumors are making him out to be. If he truly loved his comrades so, it makes his desire for vengeance more understandable. Understandable, yes—but I don't know if it makes it RIGHT.

Episode 3

A Secret Mission

...... I know you're there, Noelle. C-Commander... I'm not a commander anymore. Just a mercenary. ...... What do you want of me? ...No, I suppose that's a foolish question for a messenger. You bring new orders, I take it? Yes, um... Here. ...Hmph. So they want me to capture the prince and drag him home, do they? Um... Yes? Is there more? Yes. Um...I'm sorry. I'm not great at talking. So long as you convey your message accurately, that is all that matters. I value that, as does our homeland. *scribble* Here. A letter? "Our general back home was delighted that you had not forgotten your mission." You...worked your way into the pocket of the prince, just as they wanted. And the general... Um...the general wants you to come back now. Hmm. I'd figured I'd be left here to rot. N-no, that's not... Also, um...here. "If capture is impossible, eliminate the target instead." Hmph. Predictable. Er, yes. And because Alberia is in a state of chaos...such an achievement would... Um... If I kill the prince now, the unrest in this kingdom will only grow—which would greatly please our homeland. However. Y-you just tore up your orders! Go home, little messenger. I thought ya fought with a touch too much strategy for a standard merc. My land is a poor one, and our winters harsh. The struggle for food and sustenance is never ending. And so, after seeing the abundance and plenty in Alberia, our rulers decided to mount an invasion. Ah! We sent many spies to this land— myself included. I was charged with discovering the secrets of Alberia's legendary dragon bloodline. I have heard enough from this man, Your Highness! Pray permit me to— Easy, Elisanne. Let's hear everything Victor has to say first. I believed that the best way to get close to those in power would be to demonstrate my strength, and so I took on the guise of a wandering mercenary. Eventually, I met a number of young people on various battlefields, and we ended up forming a troupe. I figured being a mercenary captain would capture even more eyes—and make my mission that much easier to fulfill. I thought of our band as nothing more than a means to an end. I was merely using them to accomplish my mission. Commander... But the day my people were slaughtered in the Empire's trap, I knew I had made a grave miscalculation. I realized how irreplaceable the Shadewolves had become to me. So ya decided to take revenge against the Empire? Or rather, "the battle isn't over," was it? Heh. I did say that, didn't I. Though if I'm to be honest, I really just didn't want to admit my own responsibility for their fates. No, Victor. The Empire is responsible. The Empire may have laid the trap, but my foolishness led them to it. When Alberia became Dyrenell, I planned to use that unrest to help me get close to the royal family. My ambition overtook my common sense. Perhaps word of that made it to someone. Because while we thought of the imperial army as our allies, they surrounded us on the field of battle and... Now, I could care less about my homeland or royal orders. If I cannot atone for my sins, there is no point to living at all. That's a heavy thought, Victor. That is the whole truth. Believe it or not as you see fit. All I ask is that you spare Noelle; I cannot bear to see another of those in my charge die. You may banish me or torture me or execute me as you see fit— only spare this girl's life. Commander, no! I don't want your life, Victor. And why not? I am a spy from a foreign land sent here to cause you all manner of terrible mischief. You WERE a spy. Things are different now. You said so yourself, did you not? Then you...believe me? But why? Because we've fought with each other. I've seen your struggles—and your fire. That's enough for me. What do you mean? Ever since you joined us, you've been at the vanguard in each and every battle, helping me stay out of harm's way. If you wanted the secret of dragonblood, you would have been trying to put me in MORE combat—not less. That's how I know you're fighting for something deeper. You're an observant one. Bwa ha ha! There ain't a leader alive what knows his folks better'n the boss here. That's why he believes in 'em so strongly. You're even more estimable than I thought. But if you understand me, you also understand the magnitude of my grudge. I'm not saying I understand all of it. But I know that what you seek isn't done for the sake of cruelty. ...... That's why I believe in you, Victor. I see. (I had no further interest in the secret of the dragon bloodline... But now I want to know what this man who bears it might accomplish!)

Episode 4

Farewell, Shadewolf

*pant* *gasp* Victor! We got trouble! What's with the panting, Arc? That's not like you. Never mind that! I got some new info on those rumors folks're spreadin' about ya. I have no interest in such rumors. You might not give a damn, but I've been worried about 'em for a while. Folks are sayin' ya been poisonin' wells and killin' innocent folk left and right— which ain't the Shadewolves' way, yeah? Of course. I strictly forbade my men from harming civilians—and the punishments for doing so were severe. Yeah, so then why does everyone keep sayin' ya HAVE been doin' that? Anyway, that's why I've been looking into this whole "Shadewolves' leader" business lately. Turns out, the rumors talk about one guy, but there's actually TWO! One's a blade-wieldin' man with scars on his face, and the other is a hooded man what carries around the same kinda sword. The one with scars sounds like Victor, but this hooded man... I think the cat what's doing all the terrible atrocities is the one who's hidin' his face with that hood. Sounds like the two of ya have the same sword, though. Any idea who this guy might be? A sword like mine... Robelle! Does he truly still live?! I take it you know this man? I only stand alive in front of you now because of Robelle. He and I are old friends. We were both dispatched here by our country, and he served as my adjutant in the Shadewolves. When we were attacked, he took my sword and pretended to be me so I might make my escape in the confusion. The blade I use now was originally his. I kept it as a memento, never once thinking he might still be alive. Victor, let's go look for this hooded man. I hate to ask your aid in this matter, and yet...I may have no choice. Based on my knowledge of the imperial army's fighting trends, I've determined that this mountainous region would be Robelle's most likely spot for an attack. I see. It'd be easy to cause a rockslide, and with one side blocked by the cliff face, they'd have nowhere to run. If Robelle really is alive, I know he would come to the same conclusion. Wait, what's that noise?! It sounds like boulders! Are these traces of a rockslide? The imperial soldiers have fallen, just like Victor said. Over there! Please...help... ...Death to the Empire. N-no! I'm not with the Empire! They only asked me to guide them! If you would serve the Empire, you share in their culpability. S-stop, please! Gyaaaargh... I will kill every last one of them! We're too late! Hey! What kind of creep runs around killin' unarmed civilians! More survivors, is it? Stop! Robelle, it's me! It's Victor! If you are Robelle, then show your face! Commander...? Is it really... Yes, Commander. It's me. It's Robelle. I can't believe you're still alive! I was so absorbed in ensuring your escape that I slipped and tumbled down a cliffside. When I came to, I was lying alone on a riverbank. But if YOU'RE alive, then maybe others survived as well! No. They all fell to save me. Damn... Well, we all agreed to fight to the last to see that happen, so at least our plan was not in vain. Where have you been all this time? What have you been doing? Well... Have you been fighting the Empire? Was this rockslide your doing? It is as you say—I have devoted all my efforts to avenging our fallen. And how, exactly, have you been taking on an entire army by yourself? ...... If you can't say it, I will. You resorted to methods that break the code of the Shadewolves. Your vengeance has claimed the lives of innocent civilians. You burned them in their beds... You poisoned the water they drink... You defied all that we stood for. I had no choice! I cannot fight against a horde of men the way you do! If I wanted to avenge our comrades, I didn't have the luxury of choice when it came to method. Besides, the Shadewolves are no more. There's no point in maintaining a code when the people who wrote it are gone. The Shadewolves' fight is not over. Not so long as I stand. Then let us fight together, Commander! Let's both have our revenge! No. You have forgotten the pride of the Shadewolves. You are no longer one of us. ...Not one of them? I did all of this FOR them! And shamed their names in the process. Replacing Revenge

The Shadewolves are truly down to a single man now. Robelle fought and killed for revenge, and so lost his way. And I... C-Commander! *pant* Noelle? What is it? T-take this! A directive from our homeland? This must be ill news indeed if you ran so to deliver it to me. N-no, just... Read it! Quick! Hm? Rare for you to hurry me. ...This is an order to return! *nod* Y-you can go...home! Home... *scribble* Here! "We have readied a post that will make use of your abundant combat experience." Mmm. Doesn't sound like a bad assignment. *nod* *nod* *nod* It's good! ...Heh. Y-you tore up your orders again! I'm not going back. I can't. I abandoned everything in the name of revenge—including my home and duty— yet now that revenge feels hopeless. Though I have lost everything, there is yet something ahead for me. ...Here. Give this blade and this sword to your superior and tell them I died in my blind pursuit of vengeance. Then never return to this land again. B-but... (Farewell, Robelle. I will never forget the lessons you taught me.) Thank you for your service to me, Noelle. Though you were but following orders, know that I appreciate it. We will not meet again. I...I wasn't coming here because I was ordered to! I... Forget all that has happened and be free. That is what I intend to do, and you would be wise to follow my example. I claimed to live for revenge, and yet was unable to take the steps he did to claim it. Yes, but he— Oh, I know. His actions were abhorrent. But they were also the only place that my path could ever lead. Robelle taught me what it truly means to live for revenge, and I cannot become him. Then you're through seeking revenge? Yes. For a while, I'd thought to seek a path that allowed the world to live in peace, but now... You have a different plan? I'll never move on if I don't atone for the comrades who died so I might live. But how will you do that? In truth, I am not certain. But first, I intend to visit their homes. I will see the sights they did. Eat and drink what they consumed. Feel the breezes that touched their skin. I will do this and simply...think. ...Heh. They might not be happy that the man for whom they sacrificed their lives has abandoned his dream of revenge. I'm sure that's not the case. A good thought, if nothing else. Still, it's a bit embarrassing to go on a soul-searching journey at my age. You seem much more at peace than when you first came here, Victor. You've even started to laugh a little. Heh. Perhaps so. If true, then all credit goes to you and your merry band.
