Adventurer Story Episodes
A Worthy Cause
Ranzal: Sure, but we got a whole bunch'a rupies in return! That ain't such a bad deal.
Thaniel: ...Your Highness?
Thaniel: Prince Euden?!
Euden: Hmm? ...Wait, I know you! You're Thaniel! From the navy!
Thaniel: Thank goodness you're all right... Now I can finally...
Euden: Thaniel? ...Thaniel!
Thaniel: ...Huh? Wh-where am I?
Euden: It's good to see you again.
Euden: You're at our base, or what is our base for the time being: the Windwyrm's castle.
Thaniel: It is a joy to see you again, Your Highness.
Thaniel: I am humbled that you remember the name of a mere private like myself.
Euden: Of course I remember you, Thaniel. You sailed for us many times.
Euden: So tell me, what's a sailor like you doing so far from the sea?
Thaniel: Errr... Well...it's because... Umm...
Thaniel: I have abandoned the navy.
Euden: Wait, you quit? Why?
Thaniel: I decided that if I was going to swear fealty to a cause, I'd prefer that cause be Your Highness's.
Thaniel: I've long admired you, and after learning that you'd set out on a journey, I left the navy in hopes I could work for your cause.
Euden: Well, this is quite the surprise. Thank you, Thaniel.
Euden: Of course, you're welcome to stay here as long as you like.
Euden: I'll go and let the others know you're here.
Euden: For now, just rest.
Thaniel: Bah... I can't believe I did that!
Thaniel: I lied to him, confident in the knowledge that his kindness will prevent him from doubting me. Oh, I am so ashamed!
Thaniel: I didn't come after him because I was loyal to him—I came after him because of what I had done.
Thaniel: Yet he's being so welcoming and kind...
Thaniel: Damnation! I cannot permit myself to take advantage of that kindness! I must find him and tell him the truth!
Thaniel: I must tell him the real reason that I abandoned the navy!
Euden: Oh, right. About your room—
Thaniel: Y-yes?! What is it?!
Euden: Are you all right? You seem...flustered.
Thaniel: M-me? Heavens, no! Perish the thought! Now then, what did you want to say about my room?
Euden: Oh, I was just going to say that we have a number of free rooms, so you're welcome to take your pick.
Thaniel: (Blast! I did it again! N-next time...)
Thaniel: (Next time, I'll tell him the truth!)
The Lies Pile Up
Cleo: Might I ask you to go stock up for us, Euden?
Euden: Er, you want me to carry back enough to feed an entire castle on my own?
Cleo: Everyone else is busy, I'm afraid.
Cleo: Although if you feel it acceptable for all of us to go without dinner tonight, you're welcome to refuse.
Euden: All right, all right. I'll go.
Thaniel: Your Highness? Are you going out?
Euden: Yes. Apparently I need to go buy food for literally everyone.
Thaniel: What?! You have been sent to do shopping like a common peasant?! ALONE?!
Thaniel: Ah! I have the perfect solution!
Thaniel: I've just been out fishing in the lake, you see, and my day was most profitable.
Thaniel: Feast your eyes on THIS catch!
Euden: Oh wow, look at all that fish... This is enough to feed everyone and have leftovers tomorrow!
Euden: You must be a real natural at fishing.
Euden: Did you often fish when you were at sea?
Thaniel: Heavens, no. I cannot stand the sea. I wouldn't dream of fishing there.
Thaniel: I much prefer a leisurely spot of fishing by the side of a lake.
Euden: Huh? Really? It seems strange that someone in the navy hates the sea.
Thaniel: Blast!
Thaniel: ...Well, I suppose the cat is out of the proverbial sack now.
Thaniel: To tell you the truth, I didn't join the navy of my own free will—a fact that caused me to loathe my time there.
Thaniel: My father, a navy man, forced me to join, and I spent my days being put through the mill by older sailors. It was...hell.
Euden: Well, I'm not surprised you hated it. No one enjoys being forced to do something against their will.
Thaniel: Er, aren't you angry with me? I lied to you!
Euden: Of course I'm not angry. I've no right to know every single detail of your life. There's no harm in personal secrets.
Thaniel: (Guh... He really is kind...)
Thaniel: (Yet here I am lying about swearing loyalty to him. Have I no shame...?)
Thaniel: Y-Your Highness! Actually, I... Umm...
Euden: Yes? What is it?
Thaniel: I know I said that I hated being in the navy, but...
Thaniel: But my loyalty to you is genuine! There is NO need to worry on that score!
Euden: Oh, that's what you were going to say? Well, thanks, Thaniel.
Euden: It's a bit embarrassing to have something like that said to your face, but I'm still happy to hear it.
Thaniel: Urk...
Euden: Anyway, we should get back to the castle.
Euden: Everyone must be starving.
Thaniel: Damnation... I did it again...
Thaniel: I got cold feet at the last moment because I was afraid of betraying his kindness...
Thaniel: N-next time, I will definitely tell him the truth! Make no mistake!
Thaniel: Even if he ends up hating me, I can keep this charade up no longer!
Confession
Thaniel: It's almost time for dinner, Your Highness. I think you ought to put your training on hold for the time being.
Euden: Sorry, but can you wait just a little longer?
Euden: I'm almost done with this set of reps.
Euden: I just need a little more time!
Thaniel: You are more dedicated and focused than ever in these dark days...
Thaniel: And yet, behold me. I am a mere... *sniff*
Euden: What is it, Thaniel?
Thaniel: I am so very sorry, Your Highness, but I can dissemble no longer.
Thaniel: I must tell you the real reason why I came to this castle.
Thaniel: And once done...I will leave here forever.
Euden: Ooo...kay?
Thaniel: When I was reunited with you, I told you that I left the navy because I wished to swear my loyalty to you.
Thaniel: That, I fear, was a lie.
Euden: ......
Thaniel: I had been searching for a way out of the navy for a very long time.
Thaniel: When the capital was thrown into chaos, I seized my chance and turned tail, leaving the navy behind.
Euden: So that's what happened...
Thaniel: For a moment, I felt like I was finally free.
Thaniel: But then, I remembered the words Father had spoken to me so many times...
Thaniel: "Protect the king from the tallest of waves and the fiercest of gales."
Euden: ......
Thaniel: After hearing that so many times, I felt I had no choice but to honor his wishes and protect the king.
Thaniel: And though deeply ashamed at my cowardice, I thought that helping you might alleviate that somewhat.
Thaniel: ...And there you have it.
Thaniel: I've been lying to you from the moment we reunited. All my talk of loyalty was just—
Euden: Enough, Thaniel. It doesn't matter.
Thaniel: It... What?
Euden: No matter your reasons for doing so, you still came to find me.
Euden: That's enough to make me happy.
Thaniel: Ah!
Euden: So now that you have that off your chest, will you return to the castle?
Thaniel: O-of course, Your Highness! I would... I'd be honored to... Waaaah!
Euden: Whoa, easy! It's nothing to cry about!
Fathers and Sons
Euden: All right, that's the last of them. The town should be safe now.
Thaniel: You fought well, Your Highness.
Euden: I owe it all to your support, Thaniel.
Thaniel: Do you always take part in fierce battles such as these from the front line, sire?
Thaniel: Given your position as royalty, I feel it would be better for you to leave it to myself and the others while you hold back.
Euden: Logically, you're probably right.
Euden: But I feel a leader should serve as a shield for their people.
Euden: I refuse to allow my companions—my friends—to fight my battles for me.
Thaniel: How you resemble your father right now...
Thaniel: King Aurelius often said the same.
Euden: He did—and if I want to surpass him, I need all of you fighting by my side.
Euden: I don't have a chance of succeeding alone.
Euden: Everyone's support will make the difference between success and failure.
Thaniel: ......
Euden: Do you see now why I don't want to just stand at the back and issue orders?
Euden: I need comrades-in-arms, companions, and friends of equal standing.
Euden: If I can't laugh and smile and cry with those I lead—off AND on the battlefield— then they will never respect me.
Euden: And that includes you, Thaniel.
Thaniel: You really are dedicated to surpassing your father, Your Highness.
Thaniel: ...Very well. My mind is decided!
Euden: Hmm? How so?
Thaniel: Do you remember how my father said to "protect the king from the tallest of waves and the fiercest of gales"?
Euden: Those were the words he used to drill into your head, yes?
Thaniel: That's right. And all this time, I've felt that I had a duty to honor them—both in letter and in spirit.
Thaniel: I never chose to protect the royal family— it was simply something I had to do; as natural as taking a breath.
Thaniel: Because of both how I was raised and my time in the military.
Thaniel: But after hearing you speak about your father—and watching you in battle—I have changed my mind!
Thaniel: No longer do I desire to "protect" you as my father claimed I should.
Thaniel: Now I wish to fight by your side so that we may BOTH overcome our fathers!
Euden: It's reassuring to hear you say that.
Euden: Just know that I'll be counting on you!
Thaniel: No matter how rough the waves ahead are, we will conquer them together!
Equals
Euden: There's no way I can take on this many by myself...
Fiends: Graaaaaaah!
Euden: Uh-oh... Is this it for me?
Thaniel: A-are you all right, Your Highness?!
Euden: Thaniel! Am I ever glad to see you! But what are you doing here?
Thaniel: There's nowhere I wouldn't go to save you from danger, sire!
Fiends: Grrrrrr...
Fiends: Graaaaaaah!
Thaniel: Urk! There's more of them?!
Euden: Are you okay, Thaniel? You don't need to act brave for my benefit.
Thaniel: I am well, Your Highness. This is nothing!
Thaniel: ...N-no. You're right.
Thaniel: I almost lied to you again just to try to appear strong.
Thaniel: I'm actually TERRIFIED! I've never fought this many monsters at once in my life!
Thaniel: All I want to do right now is run away screaming and never look back!
Euden: Really? What a coincidence! I'm also scared out of my wits!
Euden: ...But at least I'm not alone.
Euden: With you by my side, I know we can get through this.
Thaniel: Y-Your Highness!
Thaniel: Damn it... I'm so pitiful!
Thaniel: How could I be thinking of running away when that's how you're feeling?!
Thaniel: But now your words have opened my eyes. I will fight by your side ever more, sire!
Thaniel: Even if it comes at the cost of my life, I will see you to—
Euden: Not a chance!
Thaniel: What?!
Thaniel: Wh-what do you mean, Highness?
Euden: I mean exactly what I said: I don't want you to risk your life for me.
Euden: I told you that we're equals, which means we're going to run away and live to fight another day TOGETHER.
Euden: Then we'll head back to the castle for some very well deserved sleep!
Euden: Although we'll have to listen to Cleo grumble about how dangerous all of this was first...
Euden: But at least we'll get grumbled at together!
Euden: Besides, Cleo always makes the best food once she's done grumbling, so we can enjoy some of that.
Thaniel: Th-thank you, Your Highness...
Thaniel: After all the times I lied to you, to still call me an equal...
Euden: Are you ready, Thaniel?
Thaniel: Just give the word!
Thaniel: Let's do this, Your Highness!
