The Lightwyrm's Wishes
Summary
The Lightwyrm states he will form a pact with any brother who slays the other. Though Euden wavers, Emile acts without hesitation, forcing his hand. But victory alone is not enough...
Dialogue
Emile: I...won? Aaaah ha ha ha! I did it! I won!
Emile: Are you satisfied now, Lightwyrm? You have seen my power!
Notte: The power to bark orders from the sidelines? Real impressive, chump!
Lightwyrm: We can consider that a form of battle.
Lightwyrm: For what is wisdom but the means to win victory without sullying one's hands?
Lightwyrm: Valor does not make a victor. Victory does. I'm not one to be bound by convention.
Euden: Then if we are both equally victorious, which will you choose?
Lightwyrm: Hmm. It's quite the quandary, and I'm far too kind to disappoint either of you. I couldn't possibly choose!
Lightwyrm: So YOU will decide instead, in a manner that ensures no hard feelings remain.
Ranzal: Er, they're gonna have a coin toss and promise not to be mad about it?
Lightwyrm: Goodness, no! Promises are such fragile things. ...Also, I'm fresh out of change.
Lightwyrm: They will duel to the death.
Euden: One of us has to kill his brother?!
Lightwyrm: Yes! Exactly that. Then whichever of you dies won't be in any position to hold a grudge. A rather tidy solution, I'd say.
Elisanne: This cannot be... The Ilian Church teaches that dragons are paragons of harmony!
Elisanne: Yet you would incite these men to murder?
Lightwyrm: I believe I was quite clear that I'm not overly concerned with convention.
Lightwyrm: So will you do this? Or no?
Euden: Nrgh... Emile?!
Emile: Oh, I'll do it. I'll DEFINITELY do it!
Emile: I've always been stronger than you, Euden!
Emile: Without your little entourage and precious dragons, I'm more than a match for you!
Emile: HRAAAAAGH!
Euden: Stop, Emile! Listen to me!
Emile: Silence! You have betrayed me! And here I thought I'd been blessed with a bungling failure of a brother...
Emile: I was finally smarter than someone in this accursed family. Stronger. Better. But then you snuck off and claimed a dragon!
Euden: Hrrgh...
Emile: You raised an army and stole my dragon, but even THAT wasn't enough for you!
Emile: You have to come and take my only hope of regaining some shred of what I've lost?!
Emile: Have you not taken enough? Have you not humiliated me to your satisfaction?!
Emile: I am Emile, sixth scion of the Alberian royal family!
Emile: I, too, am a son of our great father, the king!
Emile: So why then must I be the only one to suffer this degradation?! WHY?!
Emile: Now die, traitor! Rrrrrrgh!
Euden: STOP THIS, EMILE!
Emile: My sword! My...
Euden: This must end, Emile. It must. I understand how you feel...
Euden: But your anger must have a proper target!
Euden: If you nurse this grudge—if you kill me— will you truly find satisfaction?
Emile: Not a word more! I will not sit here and be lectured to by YOU!
Lightwyrm: There is no need for more words now. Euden. Finish what you have begun.
Lightwyrm: With his death, the terms of my pact are met. You will have my power. Claim it!
Euden: ......
Notte: Is this really what you want, Euden?
Notte: I know we can't save Zethia without the help of as many dragons as we can find, but this is just... It's WRONG.
Lightwyrm: Ha ha! I ask only that my master be no more bound by convention than I.
Lightwyrm: Now shed your noble mask and show me the slavering beast that lurks beneath!
Elisanne: Your Highness...
Euden: ......
