Episode 1

Cold Arrow, Curious Heart

...Hmm? I swear we saw fiends out here just a second ago. What...happened? There are fiend corpses all over the place, and they've all been killed by arrows. Whoever shot 'em knew EXACTLY where to aim, too. One arrow, one kill. We're dealin' with a real combat vet here. So someone killed these fiends in the time it took us to mobilize and get out here? ...Hmm? Who's there?! The next one of you to flinch gets an arrow through the heart. Easy, now. Who are you? You're the ones who should be making introductions, not me. Are you Imperial soldiers? Do those fiends serve your will? If so, you will not leave this place alive. We're not with the Empire. We came here to defeat these fiends ourselves. We saw them moving to attack the village from inside our castle and came here to stop that from happening. The only castle around here belongs to the traitor prince, Euden. Er, yeah. That's me, actually. Now can we please just talk about thi— There is no need to explain yourself; if you are the royal turncoat, then you are not my enemy. For when fiends attacked my village, it was not you who led them. Your village? What happened? Is everyone— You need know nothing more than my hatred for the Empire. Yet I hear you fight them as well? That's right. I see. Then permit me to join your ranks, Prince Euden. We'd be lucky to have an archer as skilled as you on our side. But I'd like to know what led you to hate the Empire. Would you be willing to tell me more back at the castle? A castle full of humans... Very well. Let us hasten there. Oh wow. You all LIVE here?! Huh? Well, yeah, but— Eeeee! What's that on the ceiling?! Is it a decoration or whatever?! Gya! So bright! ...Oooooh, I get it! It must be some kind of light. Yeah, it's a...light. Can we finish our discussion from earlier now? What ARE these walls made from? It's too smooth to be stone... Oh! My apologies. I promised to tell you more when we arrived at the castle, did I not? That was the plan, but it can wait until after you've looked around, if you want. Oh, goody! Then show me where you sleep! No, wait! Where you eat! I've always wondered how you humans eat your meals. Are you standing up, or sitting down, or lying on the floor, or... The hell's up with this crazy lady here? It's like she's a totally different person. I have no idea. Still, it's nice she's taken such a shine to the castle, I guess?

Episode 2

An Obligation to Fulfill

Oh, wow... So you've fought in all kinds of different places, huh? Like where?! Tell me, tell me! Well, I guess I've sorta been all over the place... You look like you're having fun, Eleonora. What are you two talking about? Hey, Euden! Perfect! You wanna talk to this guy, Eleonora. He's got way better stories than me. Ain't many people who can tell ya about the life of royalty, after all! Royalty, you say? Ooo, I AM curious about how human royalty lives! Yer up, Euden! Pssst! I was thinkin' I might not get away from this lady till nightfall—thanks for the assist, buddy! So then! What kind of life DID you live as a royal human? I can hardly imagine how fanciful your meals must have been! Oh, I don't know if they were THAT fancy. Er, what kinds of questions have you been going around asking everyone, anyway? Oh, just about who they are and what they like and how they think and when they eat and anything else they can tell me about human society in general. I've heard all KINDS of interesting things! So you're interested in human society, eh? Abso-LUTELY. I finally have the chance to live with humans, and I need to make the most of it! ...Ah, but I digress. Now is not the time for such folly. Hmm? Why not? There's nothing wrong with having an interest in something, after all. Perhaps under ordinary circumstances— but I have a mission to complete. Turning my back on that in favor of indulging my curiosity on trivial matters is no way to behave. Why do you feel like you have to be so hard on yourself? Because when I become interested in something, I prioritize it above all else. It is a loathsome habit I have carried with me for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a village of sylvans, the daughter of a chief. I was raised to understand that I would eventually claim that title for myself. But I was always more interested in the lives of humans than the cramped, restrictive lifestyle of the village. In fact, I often used to get into trouble for sneaking out of the village. After becoming chief, I did my best to suppress that curiosity and act the part, but it never truly went away. And this is the village you said was attacked by fiends? The same village I was sworn to lead—and to protect. But the day the kingdom became an empire, the village was overrun by fiends and fell in a single night. ...I am to blame for this. That doesn't sound like it's your fault. If anyone is to blame, it's the Empire for sending the fiends in the first place. Do not think to show me pity. It is my responsibility, and mine alone. And it is also my responsibility to avenge my people and see justice done. These arrows are from my village—arrows filled with the resentment of my people. And until each one has struck true into an Imperial soldier or fiend—until my vengeance is meted out—I cannot let myself become distracted by silly things.

Episode 3

Arrow of Vengeance

Oooo! I've never SEEN a town so big! The human settlements I saw as a child all pale in comparison. Oh! Oh! What's that giant building there?! It doesn't look like something you'd want to live in. Does it have some kind of religious significance? Oh my gosh, look at the clothes! They're so DIFFERENT! Why is that, huh? Heh. I'm glad to see you're having fun. Oh, I am! Everything here is new and exciting and... Wait, what am I doing? I swore I wouldn't let curiosity get the better of me until after I had exacted revenge against the Empire. You can't be chasing revenge every waking moment. You need some downtime. The Empire will still be there when you're finished exploring the town. But there are multiple ways I could spend my time more productively. Practicing my archery, for example. Eeeek! There's a horde'a fiends headin' toward town! Fiends?! These people are all in danger. We have to hold them off until— I'll slaughter every last one of them! Huh? Eleonora, wait! We'd be better off staying here and fortifying the entrance than running out and attacking the fiends directly. But then some might escape! That doesn't matter! Our first priority has to be protecting the town. Stay here and cower, then! I will keep this town safe by slaughtering those fiends! Geez, and she looked so happy and excited before... We can't just let her go out on her own. I'm going to back her up. The rest of you stay here and defend the town! You will die! Every last one of you! Feel the suffering of my people as you draw your last breath! Eleonora! Whoa. They're all trying to run. I think...they're scared of her. *pant* *pant* You're late, Euden. If you came to help with the fiends, I just finished off the last of them. I'm glad you're all right, Eleonora. Still, you shouldn't push yourself like that. Are you referring to the fact that I went out to fight alone? That was not ＂pushing myself.＂ I'm more than strong enough to dispose of fiends like these unaided. I understand that. But I was also referring to the way you're forcing yourself to obsess over revenge like this. I force myself to do nothing! You were so happy when we were in town, and so...sad when you were fighting. I think the happy one is the real you. You can choose to believe what you like, but it doesn't make it true. The REAL me is the one who fights to avenge her people. Now, if you are quite finished, I'm going back to town. Are you really okay going on like this, Eleonora? CAN you be okay...?

Episode 4

Pride of the Bow

This is...a wasteland. What was it that you wanted to show me here, Eleonora? This is where I used to live. It is what's left of my village. ...Though you'd be hard-pressed to guess that looking at it now. By the goddess... A few of my people managed to survive the onslaught of the fiends. But as you can see, no one could live here anymore, even if they wanted to. So now they have scattered to different sylvan settlements around the continent. What you see is exactly how it looked when the last of my people fled in terror on that day. I'm so sorry... But what was it that made you want to bring me here? I thought it the fastest way to help you understand why I want revenge. ...... After I was made this village's chief, I thought the title a burden. ＂If I wasn't chief,＂ I thought, ＂I'd be able to spend so much more time engaging with human culture.＂ All it did was keep me from living the life I truly wanted. But now...I think differently. Now, I think of being this village's chief as an honor—a source of great pride. Why the change? It was the people around me. When I first became chief, I was just an inexperienced young girl—yet they accepted me and did all they could to support me. It was only because of them that I was able to fulfill my duties at all. The title of chief isn't my personal property anymore. It is our pride. It binds us all together as a symbol of our collective strength. That is why I have a duty to exact revenge on those who tore our village apart—and by the pride that my people lent to me, I will do exactly that. ...... You once told me not to push myself too hard, and I appreciate the concern. But as chief, I have no choice BUT to avenge my people—no matter how hard I have to push myself to do it. My tribe had great pride in their bows, and it is only fitting that I use mine to right the wrong they have suffered. ...I understand you better now. But do you really think the villagers who lost their lives here want revenge? What are you saying? I don't want you to sacrifice your own happiness or well-being for retribution, no matter how deeply felt. Because you're a companion—a friend. If the people of your village valued you half as much as I do, I'm guessing they'd feel the same way. And how can you presume to know the feelings of my people? I don't—I can only guess. That's why I can't tell you to stop. I can say this, though: After you've fired your final arrow, you have to keep living. If you can't quit seeking revenge, you should at least give some thought to what you'll do at that point. Just think about what kind of a life you want to lead once your mission is done. And think about what kind of a life the people of your village would have wanted you to live. ...Very well. I will consider it.

Episode 5

Once All Arrows Are Loosed

Cleo! Cleoooo! Were you the one who made that food we had earlier?! That's right. Did you not like it? No, I didn't like it—I LOVED IT! The seasoning was like nothing I've ever tasted! Was that another human dish?! Yes. It's a favorite of Elisanne's—I learned how to make it after coming here. Really?! It was soooo good! I just assumed you'd been making it for a really long time. I'm happy to hear that, considering how much time I spent working out the recipe. That's amazing! I'm always stunned by how well you all get on here. You're a sylvan, but most of the others are humans, so there must be SOME cultural differences, right? That's easy to forget when I see how well you all interact. It's like one big family. You're part of that family too, Eleonora. You seem to be fitting in just fine yourself, even though it's full of humans. Well, that's just because this castle is especially comfy. Wait a second. Then... See? You really are happiest when you're interacting with human culture. Oh, Euden! You couldn't have timed your appearance better. I have something to talk to you about. I've been thinking about what you said— about what I should do once my revenge is finally complete. No matter how many days I spent thinking about it, I got no closer to an answer. But after speaking with Cleo, I think I have one at last. I'd love to hear it. Once my revenge has been exacted, I want to rebuild my village and take on the role of chief once more. ...Except that I want it to be a place where sylvans and humans can live in peace and harmony together. Interesting. But why did you think of that while talking to Cleo? She reminded me how sylvans and humans all live together here. And I don't see why I can't make a village where that happens as well. If I do, I won't need to deny my curiosity— if anything, it will HELP the village. I think that's a perfect idea. Then I have a favor to ask of you... Will you help me? I want my village to be a place just like this castle. Everyone here lives happily with each other, no matter their background. But if my village is to do that, I am going to need your help. I'll do whatever I can. You will? Thank you. I hope you can start rebuilding soon. As do I—and the fastest way for it to come about is for me to fight by your side. I hope that's all right with you, Euden. I wouldn't have it any other way.
