Summary

The fire dragon Arctos questions if the sisters are willing to stake their lives on smithing. When they assent, he agrees to train them. The party then returns to the Halidom so the dragon can take measure of the sisters' smithing prowess.

Dialogue

If this is the volcano where Dad trained, where's his freakin' dragon coach?! Patience, Renee, patience! I'm sure we're getting close... Rena! Ramona! Renee! The name's Arctos...and have I ever been waiting for YOU! Uhhh...did that giant flaming bear just talk? That's no bear—it's a dragon! Wait a sec. He said his name was Arctos, which is the name of the bear statue in front of our shop. That means... That's right! Arctos was Dad's coach! You bet I was! I put together a training regimen for your pops that let him maximize his potential and take it one game at a time! We did it by improving his ability to manipulate the temperature of fire. He gave it one hundred and ten percent, and beat all the odds! So what did you mean when you said you'd been "waiting for us"? Ol' Regis once said to me, "If something happens to me, please train my daughters." And seeing as how you're all here, I'm guessin' your pops has gone up to that great big forge in the sky. Y-yeah, Dad got sick and... *sniff* Wait, are you crying? Are you CRYING?! THERE'S NO CRYING IN SMITHING! If you believe in the program and trust me, I'll whip the three of you into the best smithies the world has ever seen! I believe in you, Arctos. Now teach us everything, Coach! We all believe in you, Coach! Guide us to victory! I guess I'm the only one who thinks this is sorta weird, but... Okay, sure. I believe in you, Coach. Help us beat our rival, Coach! Help us beat Lazry! Ha ha! That's the spirit! But you should know that I demand excellence from all of my players—and I can't promise you'll come out of my program alive. So are you ready?! Are you primed?! Are you prepared to wager your VERY LIVES on blacksmithing?! Uh, hang on juuuust a second. You're going to train them how to swing a hammer, and you're saying that they might DIE in the process? You don't know until you've been ON that field of forging, son! You CAN'T know! The blaze burns as hot as the sun! Melted steel runs in molten rivers! One mistake, and it's the end of your career...AND YOUR ENTIRE FACE! Blacksmiths walk hand-in-hand with death, so of COURSE my program is harsh! I train winners here, son! WINNERS! Wow, this guy is really...intense. Still, I see where he's coming from. Ramona? Rena? Renee? What's it going to be? I appreciate the concern, but we'll be fine. We'll survive whatever he throws at us and come back for more! Because blacksmithing is the thing that gives my life meaning! Agreed one hundred and ten percent! Thirded! We're gonna become the best blacksmiths ever, and you can take THAT to the bank! Ha ha ha! I see the fire in your bellies, and agree to take you into my program! Now then, let's see what you can do. We're gonna have us a little smithy scrimmage so I can evaluate your skills!
