Adventurer Story Episodes

Episode 1

The Skittish Healer

Ricardt: ......

Euden: Er...can I help you?

Euden: You've been staring at me for a while now.

Ricardt: Eeep! S-sorry! I'm so sorry for staring! I promise I'll never look at you again! Please forgive me!

Ricardt: I swear, I'll live the rest of my life looking at the ground! ...Ooo! What INTERESTING ground this is!

Euden: Well, this is...um...strange. But look, I'm not angry with you, and you're welcome to look wherever you like.

Euden: It just seems like you had a question for me. ...I mean, with the staring and all.

Ricardt: Grrk? A q-question? Oh dear. Sorry. ...I do, though! I do have one. A question, that is. Oh, I'm so very sorry.

Ricardt: You're...Prince Euden. Yes?

Ricardt: Please... Oh, Goddess help me...

Ricardt: PLEASE LET ME WORK AT YOUR CASTLE! Er, sir. ...Highness. ...Your Kingliness?

Euden: Is that all you want? Well, you're—

Ricardt: No, no! I understand. You wouldn't want someone like me here.

Ricardt: It was presumptuous to even ask! I'm sorry for wasting your time.

Euden: Just hold on a darn second! ...Sheesh.

Euden: I was ABOUT to say that you're certainly welcome to work here if you want.

Ricardt: Wait, really? ...NO! Don't answer that! Goodness, you really are as kind as they say.

Euden: Er, right. ...And just out of idle curiosity, why are you facing away from me?

Euden: Is something there?

Ricardt: N-no, Your Lordliness! Nothing at all!

Ricardt: I'm sorry for facing the other direction!

Ricardt: It's just... W-well, sir, you see... I'm terrified of talking to people.

Ricardt: Even just meeting eyes with someone, I get so...so nervous I c-can't even...

Euden: I get the picture—and I'm afraid there are quite a few people living in the Halidom. Are you going to be able to manage?

Ricardt: In all honesty, sir, probably not. But...

Ricardt: I c-can't... I can't stay this way. I know that. S-so I'll just have to...to find a way to LEARN to manage.

Euden: I see.

Euden: Well, it's admirable to know your own weakness and confront it head-on.

Ricardt: Oh no, Your Highliness! Far from it. I'm s-still a long, long way from that...

Euden: Tell me, do you have any special talents or expertise?

Ricardt: T-talents...sir?

Ricardt: Well, I...I can heal the wounded? H-hardly special, I know. Healers are common as dirt, I'm sure...

Euden: A practitioner of healing magic? That's a great help!

Euden: We see a never-ending stream of injuries around here—

Ranzal: Heeeey! Couldn't help overhearin'!

Ranzal: You can use healin' magic, new guy?

Ranzal: Well, yer timing's perfect. I got this one in the battle earlier, and it stings like ya wouldn't believe. Can ya patch me—

Ricardt: Eeeeeagh?! B-b-blood! BLOOOOOOD!

Ranzal: Oh yeah, she's a gusher, all right. That's why I need ya to take yer staff or whatever and heal 'er... Uh, buddy? Ya look a little pale there.

Ricardt: S-sorry. Sorry. I'm sorry...

Ricardt: I just... B-blood is... I'm nearly as bad with blood as I am with t-talking to people.

Euden: Doesn't that make it rather difficult to heal the wounded?

Ricardt: Yes, it's really quite unfortunate. I'm sorry!

Ricardt: I get so distracted by the...the blood that my healing spells don't work all that well. It's shameful, I know. Please don't fire me!

Ranzal: Can we get a normal guy in here for once? Is that so much to ask?

Episode 2

A Sermon in Seclusion

Ricardt: S-so, you see, the uh... The god—er, that is, the GODDESS—is... She's the goddess, and she... She, um...

Cleo: I'm afraid I can't follow this sermon for the life of me, though I suppose I never was well versed in scripture.

Euden: I don't think that's the problem, Cleo.

Euden: I had thought asking the Church to let Ricardt serve as priest here might help, but perhaps it was too much, too fast.

Cleo: Ahem... Ricardt.

Ricardt: Eeeagh?! S-sorry, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry!

Ricardt: I was terrible, I know it, I'm soooorry!

Cleo: We aren't here to blame you. Only to offer a small suggestion.

Cleo: Perhaps you might try practicing your sermons alone first?

Cleo: Now, let's go, Euden.

Euden: No, I think I'll stay and listen for a little while longer.

Cleo: Just come. Now. ...PLEASE.

Cleo: ...There, this should be far enough. We'll wait here awhile.

Euden: Wait for what, exactly?

Cleo: For him to start rehearsing his sermon. Then we can pop back in and listen.

Cleo: Perhaps he just needs to get a bit of momentum going. If he is able to start in peace, he may not get so nervous.

Euden: Mmm, I see. That's why you wanted to leave him alone.

Euden: Ah. I think he's starting.

Ricardt: The goddess offers love unconditional, asking reward in neither coin or deed. And so it is that we...

Cleo: Hmm, I see.

Cleo: He's quite good so long as there's not an audience about.

Cleo: Extremely good, in fact.

Cleo: ...Hmm. Yes, I see. An interesting interpretation, that.

Euden: Er, Cleo?

Cleo: How fascinating, from a theological and narrative viewpoint both. Hrm...

Euden: Why the furrowed brow, Cleo?

Cleo: He's just getting to the good part, but we're too far away to hear him properly.

Euden: Wait! Are we going in already?!

Cleo: Ricardt.

Cleo: Might I ask you to repeat that last passage?

Ricardt: EEEEEK?! Y-y-you were LISTENING?!

Cleo: It was more interesting than anything I've read in some time.

Cleo: What happens next? I'm quite curious.

Ricardt: W-well, you see, the uh... The god...dess? The goddess, she... Glrk.

Cleo: "Glrk" is not a word, Ricardt.

Cleo: If I don't hear the resolution, my curiosity will keep me awake all night.

Ricardt: Er, m-my tummy... Too nervous... I think I'm gonna... Hrk!

Ricardt: SORRY, BYE!

Cleo: Get back here this instant! I'm not letting you escape until I've heard the rest!

Euden: He's really got Cleo hooked. Maybe he DOES have a talent for sermons...

Episode 3

I Will Be Better!

Ricardt: Hmm? Did someone call my name?

Ricardt: It came from that room...

Elisanne: Your Highness, we must talk about Ricardt.

Euden: Oh? What's wrong?

Elisanne: I've been observing him for some time.

Elisanne: Do you truly think it wise to allow him to remain here?

Elisanne: He can barely get a word out around others, which means he can't offer sermons or hear confession.

Elisanne: And as he near faints at the sight of blood, his work as a healer is hamstrung.

Elisanne: He's kind enough, but if he's unable to serve his role here, is it truly in his own best interest to stay?

Ricardt: *sniff* Well, she's right, obviously. It's my own fault for being so useless.

Elisanne: Hmm? Is someone there?

Ricardt: Eeep!

Elisanne: Ricardt! Please don't run. Come join us.

Elisanne: We were just talking about you.

Elisanne: The Halidom is home to many who are in need of your skills.

Elisanne: But this business of being afraid of blood and people and the rest...

Elisanne: Well, we think it's time you stepped up and found your courage.

Ricardt: *sniff*

Euden: Actually, I don't think there's anything wrong with him as he is now.

Ricardt: ...What?

Euden: We all have our strengths and weaknesses.

Euden: I'd sooner he focus on doing what he's good at than see him force himself to do something where he struggles.

Elisanne: Yes, but when his struggles include all his duties as a priest and a healer...

Euden: Then perhaps it's time we thought about things a little differently.

Euden: Why not write your sermons down into a book? Or conduct confession via letters?

Euden: Healing is...a bit more difficult, perhaps, but if you were able to at least craft medicines, it would be quite helpful.

Euden: Surely there's plenty you can do that doesn't involve people or blood?

Ricardt: ......

Elisanne: At times, you are kind to a fault, Your Highness.

Euden: Maybe so, but I still have no intention of sending Ricardt away.

Euden: So please put your mind at ease on that account.

Ricardt: Th-thank you s-so... *sniff* So much... I'll just...see myself out now.

Ricardt: ...She's at least partly right. You ARE kind, Euden.

Ricardt: I'm so fortunate to work for you.

Ricardt: But that's all the more reason to do better. To BE better...

Ricardt: I won't be a burden on you any longer!

Episode 4

For the Sake of Others

Euden: *huff* *heave*

Euden: That's the last of...that pack of fiends...

Ranzal: Damn good thing, too. I can't move another step.

Cleo: Everyone is completely exhausted. We should hurry back to the castle and tend to the wounde—

Cleo: Um, the ground is shaking.

Ranzal: Ya gotta be kidding me... A whole other pack'a fiends?! Everybody fall back!

Cleo: We have injured people, Ranzal! Even if we run, we won't outpace them!

Ricardt: Hrgh... E-everyone's dripping with...blood.

Euden: Everyone who's able, grab one of the wounded and go!

Euden: I'll buy us time to escape.

Elisanne: Don't be absurd!

Elisanne: You're hurt just as badly as the rest of us!

Euden: Even so, someone has to hold them back, or they'll kill everyone!

Ricardt: Th-the blood is terrifying...and so are the fiends...

Ricardt: If I just fainted, I wouldn't have to be afraid anymore...

Elisanne: If you're staying, then I am as well. We can buy more time fighting as one.

Elisanne: I'll not allow you to die here alone.

Ricardt: But...at this rate, we could all die!

Ricardt: Everyone has been so kind and patient with me...and they could all die.

Ricardt: Find your courage, Ricardt. If ever you had an ounce of it, find it now!

Ricardt: E-everyone, gather around me! Quickly!

Ricardt: I...I'll heal your wounds!

Euden: Our wounds aren't pretty, Ricardt...

Euden: Can you manage with this much blood?

Ricardt: N-no, sir, I'm not managing at all. Not even a little.

Ricardt: I feel ready to faint at any moment.

Ricardt: But...I won't allow you all to die!

Ricardt: Now hurry! Reveal your wounds to me in all of their bloody...gory...pus-filled... Goodness, this is SUCH a bad idea...

Euden: Thank you, Ricardt.

Ricardt: M-merciful Goddess, that's a lot of blood... No! FOCUS, RICARDT!

Ricardt: Rgh... H-here goes!

Ranzal: HAAAH! ...Phew! Chalk up another pack'a fiends for the day.

Ranzal: How are the wounded?

Cleo: Nonexistent. Ricardt healed everyone.

Cleo: That was a tremendous amount of magic he channeled. He saved many lives today.

Elisanne: Including mine. I owe you a debt, Ricardt.

Elisanne: I know that I spoke to you unkindly in the past, so pray allow me to apologize for that indiscretion now.

Elisanne: You fill your role here most admirably.

Ricardt: O-oh, no, I... I really haven't done any...

Ricardt: M-more than that, I'm just glad that... that everyone is all riiiiii...

Ranzal: Aw, the little guy fainted! He never does quite stick the landin', does he?

Ranzal: Well, time to toss our savior on my back and head home!

Episode 5

Baby Steps

Euden: Hello, Ricardt. How are you doing?

Ricardt: Waugh! Euden?! A-are you hurt?!

Ricardt: D-don't worry, sir! I'll heal you right away! I've been practicing quite hard, and now I can look at scratches and stay conscious!

Euden: Heh. That's very impressive, but I'm not here for healing.

Euden: I just came by to see how you were doing.

Ricardt: Oh! Oh, whew... That's a huge relief. W-well, I'm still not good with blood. Or people. So there's that.

Ricardt: B-but, bit by bit—really, REALLY small bits—I'm getting better.

Euden: Yes, I've heard from the others. They're all impressed at the effort you've shown.

Ricardt: Y-you said it yourself before, sir.

Ricardt: We all have our strengths and weaknesses.

Ricardt: Those words have been... Well, they've been a real comfort to me.

Ricardt: I was always beating myself up for not being good enough.

Ricardt: I'd get so desperate, it made things worse. I think that's what made me so afraid of the things I'm not good with.

Ricardt: But after hearing you say it was okay to not be good at everything, that weight on my heart has been lifted.

Ricardt: Without your words, I still wouldn't have been able to face my phobias.

Ricardt: ...Not that they're gone, of course.

Euden: I'm not so sure.

Euden: At the very least, you're looking me square in the eye and speaking without a hitch. I call that progress, don't you?

Ricardt: E-er, I... I d-don't really, um...

Euden: Ha! I shouldn't have called attention to it. Don't worry—these things take time.

Ricardt: Um...Euden?

Ricardt: Thank you so much for hiring me.

Ricardt: But...it's really okay for me to stay here? You're sure?

Euden: Absolutely. This is your home, Ricardt. Stay as long as you like.

Euden: You're needed here.

Ricardt: I'm really glad to hear that... and I'll do my very best.

Ricardt: Bit by bit, I'll overcome these phobias, and—

Ranzal: Ricardt! I got a nasty gash for ya to look at. She's a real beaut!

Ricardt: Eeep!

Euden: What in the world were you doing to get a wound like that, Ranzal?

Ranzal: Takin' on a fiend.

Ranzal: Oh, and most'a this is fiend blood, if that helps. Things got a little splattery.

Ranzal: But I could really use some'a yer healin' magic, so if... Uh, hello?

Ranzal: Ya listenin' there, buddy?

Ricardt: ...Glrk.

Euden: Bit by bit, Ricardt. All in due time.
