Episode 1

The Rule of the Mountains

Euden: Let's see. We've got the groceries, herbs, lumber... I think that's all the shopping.

Cleo: Oh dear, Euden. Look.

Rex: Hoo-ee! That the goin' rate these days?

Rex: Last time I sold, I got me twice as much.

Merchant: Well then, you sold to a lunatic! We pay the fair market rate here.

Merchant: If anything, I'm overpaying!

Rex: Really? Heck, thanks, buddy! Much appreciated.

Cleo: Firewood, quality lumber, tanned leather...

Cleo: The poor season has sent prices for all of that man's goods through the roof, and yet the merchant is giving him pennies.

Cleo: He is clearly being taken.

Cleo: Any reputable shop would pay 10 times what he just accepted.

Euden: That's criminal, and I won't stand for it.

Euden: You! Stop this transaction! You're cheating this man!

Merchant: Get lost, pal! I don't need do-gooders telling me how to run my operation!

Euden: ...You there.

Euden: If you value your livelihood, take your wares to another shop.

Euden: I think you'll find their prices to be far more agreeable.

Merchant: N-no! Wait! I can't have goods of this quality go to the competi...

Merchant: Rats.

Merchant: Good sir, I believe my abacus hand slipped. What clumsy fingers I have! Ah ha ha ha ha...yes.

Cleo: What sort of idiot would believe—

Rex: Aw, heck, buddy. I know how that goes.

Rex: Don't worry about it none! Everybody makes mistakes.

Cleo: ...He's not even angry.

Merchant: Er, uh...yes, well, thank you. My apologies again.

Rex: Heck, I'm just glad you're givin' me such a humdinger of a price!

Rex: Ain't never got this much before!

Euden: You're really not upset by all this?

Euden: You were moments away from being fleeced out of your livelihood.

Rex: Yessir, that's true—but part of that's m'own fault. I never did have a head for numbers.

Rex: Still, ain't every day someone's kind enough to step in, so thanks.

Rex: Say, you gotta let me pay ya back!

Euden: That's not necessary.

Euden: We eavesdropped on your business, then bull-rushed right into it.

Rex: Aw, that's just silly. 'Sides, it's the rule of the mountains, so it is!

Rex: Cut a tree down, put a sapling to ground. Take a tree's fruit, water up the root!

Rex: Gotta give back what ya get.

Cleo: You live in the mountains, then?

Rex: That's right, ma'am. Built m'self a little cottage where I cut wood and hunt, then I sell the lumber and skins for coin.

Rex: Hey, now there's an idea!

Rex: I'm pretty good with m'hands and such, so maybe I could help out with any home repairs ya need done.

Euden: Well, I suppose the Halidom could use a bit of love here and there...

Euden: No, that's too much. I can't ask for manual labor in return for a few words.

Rex: Gotta give back what you get, buddy! Rule of the mountains.

Rex: Now lead the way!

Episode 2

The Merry Table

Rex: *chomp* *horf* Hoo-ee! I ain't never tasted vittles this good. Thanks again!

Ranzal: I like ya already, Rex. Ya eat like a damn champ!

Cleo: Honestly, Ranzal.

Cleo: Must you drag poor Rex into your obscene gorging festival?

Rex: Oh, I don't mind none, ma'am.

Rex: It's a rare treat gettin' to eat with company 'round the table.

Cleo: Well, I'm glad to hear that, but please don't make yourself sick.

Euden: It looks like you're fitting right in, Rex.

Rex: Yessir, I am. This place is a real humdinger.

Rex: It's so lively and fun with everyone around. And the FOOD? Hoo-eee!

Rex: Beats eatin' alone in a mountain cabin any night'a the week!

Rex: I just feel bad on account of I was comin' down here to thank all'a you, and now I'm the one havin' all the fun.

Euden: Are you nuts? You rebuilt our entire larder!

Euden: Only fair you enjoy some of the contents.

Cleo: Absolutely.

Cleo: You even went to the trouble of foraging fresh mountain produce for dinner.

Cleo: Mushrooms and fruit are rare these days, and their price reflects it. I'm grateful for the bounty you picked for us.

Cleo: Our larder is our lifeline, and we're appreciative that you helped fill it.

Cleo: ...Unlike someone else I know who seems dead set on emptying it.

Euden: Er, I've probably been contributing to that myself. Sorry, Cleo.

Euden: In any case, it's been great having you here, Rex.

Euden: I hope you'll make yourself at home for as long as you'd like.

Rex: That's right swell'a ya, buddy.

Rex: All this for a little construction work and some veggies is a bargain.

Rex: At the rate I'm goin', I'll never catch up to what I owe ya.

Rex: I hope ya know I'm grateful from the bottom of m'heart.

Ranzal: Haw haw! That's my man, all right! And hey, thank YOU!

Ranzal: Now let's drink a toast to gratitude!

Euden: If you were willing, we'd be happy to have you move in permanently.

Rex: Gosh, that'd be a heckuva lot of fun. It's just that...

Euden: Hmm? What is it?

Rex: Well, it's a lot of things, I reckon. See, the thing about mountain livin' is...

Rex: Heh. Sorry. I ain't never been much for public speakin' like this.

Ranzal: Stow the thinkin' for later, my man.

Ranzal: Tonight, we feast! Eat, eat, eat!

Rex: You got it, buddy!

Euden: Those two are quite the pair.

Euden: It'll be a shame if he decides to leave...

Episode 3

Casualties of War

Rex: This tree's good and strong. Should be perfect for shorin' up the castle.

Rex: ...HUP!

Euden: It's amazing seeing you take down a tree that size with a single axe blow, Rex.

Rex: Just practice is all. Now let's get a move on to the next grove.

Euden: But there are so many trees around us.

Euden: Wouldn't it be easier to just take what we need here?

Rex: Yessir, it would be. But we can't do it.

Rex: Cut down too many trees in one spot, and the animals lose their homes.

Rex: Also raises the risk'a landslides and other such problems.

Euden: Huh. I never knew that.

Rex: Forests are a lot more delicate than you'd think.

Rex: Ya can't mess with that balance.

Rex: Ready to go, then?

Rex: The next grove over's got some real beauts. We'll grab a couple 'n' be on our way.

Rex: What'n the...? It's...gone! The whole forest is gone!

Euden: It's all been burned. This is awful.

Euden: ...Look, Rex. These are hoofprints. The imperial army came through here.

Euden: They must have torched all the trees and scrub to make it easier to ride through.

Rex: They did this so they could ride horses?!

Rex: Burned a whole forest to the ground just so they wouldn't have to WALK?!

Rex: The flowers, the animals... All gone because they were too damn lazy!

Euden: I'm so sorry, Rex.

Rex: If a town burns, it's a tragedy. But ain't no one gives a rip about a forest.

Rex: Is human life the only kind that matters?! How can people be so damn SELFISH?!

Euden: I've never seen you this angry, Rex.

Rex: ...Sorry, Euden. Why don't you head on back?

Rex: I've got somethin' I need to do.

Euden: What are you planning?

Rex: I'm gonna go to town...

Rex: Then I'm gonna buy some seedlings and start replantin' the forest.

Rex: It'll take a generation, but I have to try.

Euden: I'd like to help.

Euden: What you're saying is important.

Euden: Humans aren't the only ones who suffer in this war.

Euden: I may even be guilty of destroying life without realizing it.

Euden: I'd like to make up for that.

Rex: ...Means a lot, Euden.

Rex: Just wish more people felt like that.

Rex: Ah, heck. Don't reckon complainin' about it's gonna make things any better.

Rex: Let's get t'work. We'll rebuild this forest with our own two hands.

Euden: Lead the way, Rex.

Episode 4

The Mountains, or the Castle?

Ranzal: Heya, Rexy!

Ranzal: Just scored me some top-grade meat! Ya ready for a feast?

Rex: ......

Ranzal: Uh, Rex? ...Rexy? ...Baby?

Ranzal: Man, he's really thinkin' hard. Wonder if somethin' happened.

Euden: I have my guesses, but we'd have to ask him ourselves to be sure.

Euden: Something on your mind, Rex?

Rex: ...Hmm? Oh, hey, Euden.

Rex: I was just noodlin' on somethin' my parents said when I was a boy.

Euden: Oh?

Euden: I think this is the first you've mentioned your parents. What are they like?

Rex: They were both mercenaries, though that all happened 'fore I was born.

Rex: They saw battle after battle and eventually lost the stomach for it.

Rex: So they quit the life when they had me and moved up into the mountains, away from all the fightin'.

Euden: So that's why you lived up there.

Rex: They never were keen on me leavin' the mountain, if I'm honest.

Rex: Must'a heard the same line from them a hundred times...

Rex: ＂Cities and towns are the soil for war, and man is an animal that grows cruel and greedy in packs.＂

Rex: ＂Live in a city, and you'll have a hand in that someday.＂

Euden: That...makes some sense. I wish it didn't, but it does.

Euden: Whenever people come together, there are always conflicts and squabbles.

Euden: Are you thinking of returning to the mountain life?

Rex: ...Don't rightly know.

Rex: I've gone and made friends here. Made a real place for m'self here. Ain't as simple as just leavin'.

Rex: I love the time I spent here with everyone.

Rex: I learned how much fun meals can be when ya ain't just eatin' alone.

Rex: Makes me think m'parents focused on the bad side'a folks and never the good.

Rex: Guess that's why I ain't cut outta here yet.

Euden: That all makes sense.

Euden: I don't think there's a wrong choice here. You can stay or go back to the mountain; both are valid ways to live.

Euden: But I want you to know one thing...

Euden: Even if you do choose the mountain life, we will always be your friends.

Rex: Thanks much, Euden. It means a lot.

Episode 5

Welcome Home

Ranzal: Aw, DAMMIT! Euden! Ya gotta see this!

Euden: Is that a letter?

Ranzal: It's from Rex! He's movin' back to the freakin' mountain!

Euden: ...Then he made his choice.

Ranzal: That's so depressin'... He was one'a my best pals here! *sniff*

Euden: I just wish he'd said good-bye in person.

Euden: It's sad to get the news in a letter.

Rex: Hey, buddies! I'm back.

Euden: What?!

Ranzal: REXY!

Rex: What's with all the surprised faces?

Euden: What are you doing here?!

Euden: Don't get me wrong—I'm delighted! But didn't you go back to the mountain?

Rex: Yessir, I did. Needed to patch the roof 'fore the rainy season set in.

Ranzal: ...What?

Rex: Yeah, she's been leakin' fierce as ya like for a while now.

Rex: So I nipped back there to do a few repairs.

Ranzal: Then this letter...

Ranzal: YOU IDIOT! I thought ya weren't ever comin' back!

Rex: What, that? Heck, I just wanted t'get a head start on the day, so I left early. Thought it'd be polite to leave a note.

Euden: You worried me too, Rex.

Rex: Heck, ain't no need to worry about that!

Rex: I'll pop back up there from time to time, but I'm livin' here for good.

Rex: My parents moved away from people 'cause they got sick of war.

Rex: Reckon that was the right thing for them.

Rex: But now that I've seen the fightin' firsthand, I've come to my own answer.

Rex: This war is taking lives and destroying homes, and I wanna fight to protect 'em.

Rex: And I reckon that with you and the others, I got a decent shot at doin' that.

Euden: I reckon so too, Rex.

Rex: Plus I ate lunch alone back at the cabin, and it just don't taste the same.

Rex: I wanna eat m'meals at a table crowded with friends!

Rex: ...Which is why I brought these!

Rex: Nature's bounty, foraged fresh from the mountainside!

Ranzal: REXYYY! Yer the best!

Ranzal: Now c'mon! Let's get this feast goin'!

Euden: Welcome home, Rex.

Rex: Good to be back, buddy. Now let's eat!
