Adventurer Story Episodes

Episode 1

You Don't Know of Me?!

Ezelith: All right, which one of you is Euden? You're in here, aren't you? Come out immediately!

Euden: Were you looking for me?

Ezelith: Was I? I'm not certain. Frankly, I expected someone with muscles. Possibly a beard.

Ezelith: Whatever. I'll allow you to hire me on. You're not exactly my type, but I like what I've heard about you.

Euden: I'm flattered by the offer, but... who are you?

Ezelith: Are you seriously asking me that? ME?! The greatest magical mind of our time? The genius of the century?

Euden: Not ringing any bells, sorry...

Ezelith: Un-be-lievable. Well, let's try this: it's my signature spell! If you don't know it, you've been living under a rock.

Euden: Oh, I know that spell! I just don't know you.

Ezelith: Hmm. Still unclear if you're just ignorant or deliberately trolling me.

Euden: Never. Now can I please have your name?

Ezelith: I suppose. It's Ezelith. See that you don't forget it.

Ezelith: Oh, and I expect proper treatment here. Just because you're unaware of what a coup hiring me was doesn't change that.

Euden: If you're asking for special treatment, I'm afraid I can't offer it—but rest assured everyone here is treated with respect.

Ezelith: Fine, good enough. Oh! You there! Surely YOU know who I am!

Ranzal: Muh? Ya talkin' to me?

Ezelith: I am indeed! My turn to ask a question. Who is the world-famous mage known far and wide for this signature spell?!

Ranzal: Oh, I've seen that magic before! Hmm, where was it...? Oh, right! Old Granny Catlady back home used to use it!

Ezelith: Is EVERYONE in this castle daft?!

Episode 2

A Genius Is a Genius

Ranzal: It's Ezelith, yeah? That's some pretty impressive work ya been doin' lately. Attitude's a little rough, but hey...

Ezelith: Yes, it turns out that the genius of the century is capable at her job. Any other brilliant observations you'd like to offer?

Ranzal: "Genius" is a convenient title, yeah? No proof required—just get to say it and off ya go.

Ezelith: Just what are you insinuating?! I think I've MORE than proven my genius here!

Ranzal: To yerself, sure—which gets ya as far as "self-professed genius." But to be the real deal, ya gotta convince someone else.

Ezelith: A genius is a genius. It's a statement of fact, not something that requires the say-so of another.

Ranzal: Well, ya got mine anyway, so that's a solid start on that next step.

Ezelith: This is quite the turn from the local oaf. You DO acknowledge my genius, then?

Ranzal: Got no reason to lie, do I?

Ezelith: Then put on more of a show of envying me. Stand in jealous awe of my intellect while cursing your own mediocrity!

Ranzal: Bwa ha ha! Back when I was younger, I might'a done just that.

Ranzal: But like I said, yer just barely at the first step here.

Ezelith: Ah, THERE we are! That had the faint ring of sour grapes. Delicious...

Ezelith: I am bored to DEATH of praise. I want to see people writhe!

Ranzal: Eh, it's easy enough to get respect, but givin' it? That's tricky.

Ranzal: Yer own talent and pride can get in the way and keep ya from seein' straight. Hell, yer a classic case of that.

Ezelith: Or perhaps no one else is at my level! Why should I acknowledge a bunch of dullards who can't keep pace with me?

Ranzal: Ain't a matter of "should."

Ezelith: This is ridiculous. If there's no need for me to acknowledge anyone else as a peer, why would I ever do so?

Ranzal: Sheesh. Got it all figured out, yeah? Ya MUST be a genius, then...

Ezelith: At last, something we agree on!

Episode 3

Room to Grow

Ezelith: Yes? What is it? I can only assume you called me down here to lecture me.

Cleo: Very good. Let's talk about how you comport yourself in combat.

Cleo: Some occasional grandstanding is benign enough, but your total lack of cooperation is a drain on everyone's morale.

Ezelith: So, what? I should hobble my genius to make nice with others?

Cleo: This has nothing to do with your genius. I've collected the data. We can review it together once—

Ezelith: Ugh, never MIND! I've heard it all before. This place is as hopeless as the others.

Cleo: I'm fast arriving at the same conclusion about you. Perhaps it's time we all moved on.

Ezelith: What's that supposed to mean? Are you FIRING me?!

Cleo: Why would I need to? You won't stay. You certainly didn't at any of the other knightly orders you joined.

Ezelith: The other... You dug up my PAST? Oh, you're a real piece of work, lady!

Cleo: I don't have to dig to hear rumors.

Ezelith: And you believed them blindly and decided to come needle me so I'd run off. That it?

Cleo: Oh, believe me, if I were trying to run you off, I wouldn't do so with needling. Ezelith, your talent is exceptional, but—

Ezelith: But what? I refuse to work beneath my full potential just to match pace with all the slack-jawed yokels around here?

Cleo: BUT you have room to grow even further, is what I was going to say. And as such, I have some new tactics I'd like to explore.

Ezelith: Room to GROW? If I grew any further, there'd be no need for you at all!

Cleo: And I would gladly welcome the time off. For now, I see potential standing before me, and I want to see it realized.

Ezelith: ...You said you heard rumors. About me.

Cleo: Not a one of them complimentary.

Ezelith: And you believed them.

Cleo: I believe in what I see with my own eyes— and what I see is budding talent.

Ezelith: Budding... Fine, then! Gimme those tactics! I'll give 'em a thorough review!

Episode 4

In Need of a Good Setback

Euden: You mentioned before that you were curious to experience failure, Ezelith. Any luck so far?

Ezelith: Of course not! ...But I think I at least have a better grasp of the concept now.

Ezelith: What does failure mean to YOU, Euden?

Euden: Hmm. I guess it's a feeling of frustration and impasse when all of your talent isn't enough to accomplish your goals.

Ezelith: I'm well aware of the definition, thanks. I meant its PERSONAL significance.

Euden: So, the lessons failure teaches a person?

Ezelith: Exactly. You see, as a genius, I doubted I would ever truly know failure.

Ezelith: I've never cared a lick for the expectations of others, and any task I set my mind to can be accomplished with ease.

Euden: That certainly sounds like a recipe for a failure-free life.

Ezelith: Right? So the way I see it, the only way I can experience failure is through others.

Ezelith: Everyone around me screwed up and dragged me down, so I came up short— that sort of thing.

Euden: I...suppose that still qualifies as failure?

Ezelith: But getting over that would hardly help me grow. Honestly, I think this business about getting stronger with failure is malarkey.

Ezelith: What's more, the people here are all reasonably smart and capable, so there's my last hope of failure out the window.

Ezelith: Anyway, that's when I started thinking of it differently. Like, what if what I did BEFORE finding this place was my stumbling block?

Ezelith: I don't need to worry about future failures now. I can just stay here and be thankful for what I've found.

Euden: That's actually a good way to think of it.

Ezelith: I KNOW, right? The ability to think outside the box like that is what defines a genius, you know.

Episode 5

Ready to Rampage

Ezelith: We need to talk, old man. Come.

Ranzal: I'm busy. If yer gonna ask me out, you can do it right here.

Ezelith: Sad. Also, gross. Possibly very gross? This is about combat tactics, you goon.

Ranzal: Still waitin' for the point here.

Ezelith: There's something I'd like to try. It's not especially difficult, but... I can't do it alone.

Ezelith: Look at this diagram. The key lies in you and I tightly coordinating. I call this move "The Ranzelith Rampage." Now, it's... Er...

Ezelith: What? Why are you grinning? Is it a creepy old man thing? Don't make me call Cleo!

Ranzal: I'm just thinkin' back to when ya asked why ya'd ever wanna acknowledge anyone else—and look at ya now. I'm so proud!

Ezelith: Ew, don't get all nostalgic on me. That's SUCH an old man move.

Ranzal: Enough with the "old man" stuff already. I'll help ya out, but only if I get a new nickname.

Ezelith: Well, listen to you! Have one in mind, old man? Let's hear it.

Ranzal: "Big bro."

Ezelith: Okay, what? We're family now? Ew. No.

Ranzal: What's wrong with—

Ezelith: At the point I have to explain that, you are DEFINITELY an old man. So we'll just stick with that.

Ezelith: Anyway, don't act like you're not excited to rampage across the battlefield with me.

Ranzal: I'm always ready to rampage, kid.

Ezelith: Good! Then let's get practicing. If you manage to keep up with me, I might just accept you as my peer!

Ranzal: Whoa, slow down! Ya think the world's ready for Ranzal, genius of the century?

Ezelith: Ha! It's finally your time to shine! Now let's get to it, old man.
