Episode 1

A Gift From the Past

The sunset on that day was a far different color than usual. It was a deep and bloody red. The color of despair. Graaaaargh! Ooof! Prince Euden! I'm okay, Cleo—but this fiend is unlike anything we've fought before. It's incredibly powerful! Raaargh! And it's fast, too! Augh! Nnngh! Urgh! Hold on, everyone! I will heal you! *snort* Hah! Yah! My attacks have no effect! Cleo, run! Yeah... Ain't nothin' ya can do to these things...by yerself... No! I refuse to abandon you! (Although I cannot deny the truth of it— this foe is clearly beyond me. And yet, my friends are in danger, and I must act!) *snooort* Urk! (How pathetic... Forgive me, everyone...) Graaaaagh?! Heh heh. That one smarts, don't it? Just a little smokescreen I whipped up— it's murder on a fiend's senses! Luca! GRAAAARGH! You guys okay?! Still breathin', thanks to you. What is such a powerful fiend doing in a place like this? We can worry about the source later. Right now, we need to reorganize our forces and figure out a plan. For sure. If we don't take it out soon, it's likely to hit some poor village. Then let's head back to the Halidom and figure out our next steps. Right! ...... Are you okay, Cleo? What's with her, anyway? She seems pretty out of it. She has been so since yesterday. I pray it is nothing serious. I think she's going to be fine, but maybe she should sit this one out. Fair enough. Let's get rollin', then. Everyone! It's time for lunch! ...Hmm? A letter? We've gone to deal with the fiend from yesterday. Can you hold down the fort while we're gone? We should be back soon. — Euden By the heavens, they abandoned me! But what if one of them gets hurt?! I have to hurry after them. ...Or do I? Will I even be of any use if I do manage to track them down? I was completely powerless in the face of that fiend earlier...as I ever have been. Three hundred years later, and nothing has changed. It's just like when he headed off to his demise... No! I don't want to lose anyone else that I care about ever again! And yet, I can't possibly protect them all as I am currently. That's why... That's why I want power! Then I can finally protect the people I care about! What? What is this light?! Hail, awakened one. Hail, you who cast aside dreams of kindness and gaze firmly upon your friends with your own eyes. Accept the power of this compact. Accept this artifact that pierces heaven and earth! Wait, what just happened...? ...... CLEO?! GREEEAAAAH! You will harm my friends no more! I WILL PROTECT THEM AAAAALL! Graaaaagh! GREEEEAAAGGGGH! Cleo! Such an attack will not penetrate my mana barrier, the Prismatic Wall. It is time to end this. Haaaaah! Gyaaaargh! ...So you found that there rod and it leveled you up? Wild, man! To think a sacred relic such as this was sleeping within the Halidom... It's like we're witnessin' the birth'a some grand sorceress! Bwa ha ha! I know you are poking fun, Ranzal, but I rather like the sound of that. Regardless, I will use the power this rod has given me to fight. Until this moment, I have supported all of you from a position in the rearguard. But from this point forward, I will stand with you on the front lines! For I am your true comrade. It would be a tremendous help to have you up there with us, Cleo. I'll be counting on you more than ever! I shall not let you down.

Episode 2

Physical Training

Graaargh! Cripes, this thing looks like it's seriously open for business! Look out, Cleo! It's headed your way! This will not play out as it has so many times before! Haaaaah! By Ilia, Cleo! You took that thing down as if it were a mere fly! In truth, this rod did most of the work. Nonetheless, it delights me that I am finally able to be of help to you all on the actual field of battle. Now let us continue cutting these fiends down to size! Cleo, wait! Easy there, lady! No need to hack 'em to pieces all by yer lonesome! Haaah! Yaaah! HAAARGH! *pant* *pant* I'm...quite weary now... Hmm? What's this? More of them?! Wait, where are my companions? Did I leave them behind in my haste? Blast, there are too many foes. I fear retreat is my only option. *huff* *pant* Can't...run any more... Gryaaaah! Ah! Cleo, are you all right?! Euden! Everyone! Yer a real handful, ya know that? My apologies. Apologies can wait—first, we must clear out the remaining fiends. Haaah! Cleo, what happened today was... Well, it was a problem. I'm sorry that you all had to go to so much trouble on my account. I truly am hopeless. It's okay, Cleo. This is all new to you, so there's going to be a learning period. No, it is more than that! Today's actions showed me that while I have strength, I lack any kind of stamina! Sorry, what? Indeed! If I had more stamina, things wouldn't have unfolded as they did. Er, that's not actually the point I was— I will train without pause! Even though I mostly disdain exercise and have never understood people who yammer on and on about honing their bodies into weapons and so forth. Regardless, I will train without pause! The next time we fight, Cleo will prove her worth! I have some serious doubts about this... *pant* *pant* Just keep running, just keep ru—OWWW! Aaaand down she goes again. Man, I've never seen anyone who had such a hard time running laps. Last I heard, she was trying to run a hundred laps around the courtyard, which seems...optimistic. Maybe her body just ain't cut out for this kinda thing. Nonsense. I have seen Cleo lift twice her weight when working around the castle. But why, then, is this so challenging? Yeah, but those are two different things. Maybe... Oh, hang on. She's comin' back. *huff* *puff* *wheeeeze* That...is...ninety laps...yes? Please say yes... Yep! That's ninety laps, all right! Minus...you know. Eighty-seven. That means ya just got ninety-seven to go! N-ninety...seven...!? Look, maybe ya just ain't suited for runnin' in circles. Hell, I'm the same way. And on that note, I got ya something. Is this...a jump rope? Yep! But don't be goin' crazy with it. Start with one jump, then work up. Do that, and you'll have crazy muscles poppin' up in all kinds'a places! That is certainly NOT my desired outcome. However, I am intrigued by this jump rope plan of yours, Ranzal... Very well, then. I will give it a try. ...One—OOOOOWWWW! Hey! Just start with one like I told ya! That was a tiny error, nothing more. Yes, well, let me try again... One—OOOOOWWWW! Oh, for the love of... How did I get this rope so tangled around my legs?! Aaaugh! Now it's wrapped around my entire body! Help me, someone! Heeelp! Can ya really not even do ONE jump?! Fret not, Cleo. Some people simply have different strengths than others. Procede at your own pace. *sigh* No, he's right. I'm useless. Perhaps you should consider calisthenics. They're surprisingly good exercise, and not at all difficult. Hmm... Yes, I suppose even I should be able to do those. All right, let's take it nice and slow. One! Two! Three! Four! One! T-two! Th...threeeeee.... OOOWWW! Charley horse! Charley horse! You are suffering cramps after THREE repetitions?! ...... Sounds like you had a pretty rough day today, Cleo. It was pathetic. Even the simplest of exercises is far beyond my ability. Actually, we should talk about that. You said earlier that you ran into trouble because you lacked stamina, but I don't actually think that's the problem. No? The problem is that you lost track of who you really are. You're normally more composed than any of us, yet you ran off and attacked a whole group of fiends by yourself. That's... Exercise and training are both important, but right now, you should focus on finding a fighting style that works for you. You really think that is my issue? ...Hah! *pant* *pant* My apologies, but I think I need to fall back for a moment. Then leave this to me. Yaaaah! *pant* *pant* Whew! You okay, Cleo? Yes. And now that I've caught my breath, I'm ready to unleash a mighty spell! Quickly, everyone! Lure the enemies in so they gather in front of me! You got it! O mana, fount of all power, hear my cry! Haaaaaaaaaaah! Great galloping mules! You blew 'em to bits with one spell! You carefully assessed the situation and came up with a workable plan. It is good to see our Cleo back again. And you have my apologies again that I forgot myself for a time. But now, I am going to fight in a way that suits me. ...And I am never going to exercise again!

Episode 3

The Lost Cat

Hmm? Is that...? Er, you appear to have a cat following you, Euden. This little guy? Yeah, I saved him from a wolf attack in the woods yesterday. Guess he's taken a shine to me. *stare* He runs off if I get near, though, so I can't really do much else to help him. Perhaps he just needs some time to warm up to people. In that case, allow me to lend you a hand in caring for it. Are you sure? You've been awfully busy lately with your magic training. And yet, I still find time to take care of everyone else. Adding one cat to the mix will hardly break my back. ...Or so I thought last week. I clearly underestimated that cat. He hasn't lowered his guard even a little. He won't take meals in front of people, nor will he so much as sniff the toys I place in front of him. He also refuses to eat my food! That has never happened in my life, and I am HUNDREDS of years old. It's simply humiliating. It's crazy how one little animal can be so much trouble. Speaking of that picky cat, is he not with you today? No, I haven't seen him since this morning. GYAAAA! SOMEBODY HAAAAAALP! MROOOOOW! What the heck?! Someone heeeeelp! This stupid cat wants to eat meeeeee! GO EAT RANZAL INSTEAD, KITTY! HE'S FULL OF TASTY MUSCLE! MRRRRROW! No, cat! That's a bad cat! *hisss* Yeowch! Euden! ...There. That should do it. Thanks, Cleo. *sigh* I don't understand how a cat that follows me everywhere can possibly dislike me so much. Mrooooow. I think he's following you around because you seem like someone he can trust. Although if that's the case, he could stand to be less difficult in his daily... I simply believe you could stand to be less difficult in your daily interactions. Oh. (Those same words were said to ME over 300 years ago...) Honestly, Cleo! Every time King Alberius visits, you immediately put your guard up. Royal Aide I am not trying to be difficult—I merely wish to keep an appropriate distance from His Majesty. There is a very fine line between those two things, and I am not at all certain that you are on the right side of it. Was it not your abiding respect for His Majesty that led you to this castle in the first place? I simply believe you could stand to be less difficult in your daily interactions. I am an attendant—nothing more. It would be the height of hubris to view my liege lord as a friend. Fie, but you are obstinate! ...That said, he has always maintained that such demeanor is very much like you—and that it's precisely why you capture his attention. I understand your position in this matter, but please try to spare a thought for His Majesty's feelings as well. (This cat yearns to be near him, and yet keeps his distance. I was ever the beneficiary of Alberius's unyielding kindness, and yet I...) Why are you so kind to this cat, Euden? Well, I just get the feeling he needs attention. ...And why is that? I feel like I understand this cat— and I think he DOES actually like me, deep down. But he's not taking that next step, so I figure it's sort of up to me. I'm just going to keep trying until he trusts me, which is hopefully going to make him happy in the end. Heh... Ha ha ha ha! Er, sorry. Was that funny? There is nothing funny about your kind and generous nature. Achoo! Uh oh. Are you getting cold, little guy? Here, you should take this blanket. MROOOOOW! *hiss* Ack! Sorry! Never mind! Forget it! *sigh* Maybe this is all a fool's errand. Never think that. This cat is well aware of your kindness. Later that night... Whew! It sure is cold today. How about you, cat? You cold? ...... Whoa... Heh! See, kitty? It's warmer for both of us when you snuggle up like this. Meooooow. Soon thereafter, Cleo and the prince found a suitable foster family who agreed to take in the cat. I sure hope he's okay in his new home. How can he not be? They were practically falling over themselves to pet him and give him food. And it's all because you taught him how wonderful trusting someone can be. Heh. I guess that makes all my new claw marks worth it. It seems a chronic and severe good nature runs unbroken in your bloodline... Sorry, what was that? ...It was nothing. Shall we head back?

Episode 4

An Enduring Bond

So, uh, I've been curious about somethin'. Why do you think that gold rod thingie was sealed away in the Halidom? Why do you ask? Just curious. I mean, aren't YOU?! I've actually been wondering about that little question myself. An ordinary mage wouldn't be able to hide an artifact of such power here without it being found before now. There was only one person in King Alberius's court who would have been capable of such a thing. And who was that, pray? Oh, I bet you know, Cleo. Perhaps I do, at that. The only one capable of such a feat would have been Alberius himself. That was my guess, too. Wait, that thing belonged to ALBERIUS?! That means it's super legendary! But supposing that IS the case, there is something I do not understand. If Alberius was concerned for my welfare, why not give me the weapon directly? Why would he go about it in such a circuitous fashion? Heh. Sounds like this here golden rod still has a few secrets left in the tank. ...Don'tcha, rod? Yeah, that's a good rod! Huh? Hey, look at that! What is it now? There's a name inscribed on this thing— a famous sylvan sorcerer from the past. According to legend, the guy was a crusty old coot who spent all his time livin' alone in the deep woods. And you believe this sylvan sorcerer of yours created the rod for me? Or was there another reason...? I wish there was a way for us to confirm this theory. Well, why don't we go find out? I realize I am the exception to the rule, but it seems unlikely this sylvan sorcerer is still alive at this point. No, but people have heirs and successors and junk, yeah? Maybe we'll have some luck in that department. If we head to the remains of his hideout, we might be able to learn somethin'. It would be fascinating to speak with someone about this matter... Then let's do just that! Tell us everything you know, Luca... After a lengthy search, the group finally learns the location of the sorcerer's hideaway... Hmm, hmm. Yes, if I'm not mistaken, this rod was created by my teacher. Which means the tale was true... You know something of this rod? Yes, though just what my late predecessor told me. Would you be willing to tell us? Hmm hmm, of course. Though I think rather than telling you the tale, it would be faster for you to see it for yourselves. If we combine this rod's mana with my arts, it will be no trouble at all to recreate the scene of that day. I will show you a fragment of the past. A memory of those lost days of yore! Oh ho! You would have me—a sylvan— take on a request from a human? This request comes from King Alberius himself. There is a young sylvan female who numbers among his attendants. He would bid you craft this golden rod for her alone. Not only do you drag my brethren into your war, but you even demand I craft the weapon with which she will fight? What a uniquely human arrogance. His Majesty has no intention of bringing his sylvan attendant onto the battlefield. In the event you choose to create the rod, my lord will seal it away in his castle. Seal it away? For what purpose? In truth, my master does not presently wish to hand the weapon over to her. This is all in preparation for a day that is yet to come. Hmm. I see. We live in a time of great war and strife, and danger cannot be assumed to exist only for those on the front lines. My lord's castle is strong, but could still fall prey to sieges, bandits, or worse. There is one soul in particular in our castle who loves peace, and my liege wishes to at least protect her if nothing else. However, my lord does not wish her to wield a weapon at this time. And why is that? Because her purity would be her undoing. Were she to obtain power, she would surely cast herself into battle to aide her liege, despite her abhorrence for conflict. We cannot permit her life to be lost in this war. The people of the forest should be given the opportunity to live out their long lives. I see. So you would have me create this rod for her self-defense. Or, in truth, for the day her participation in battle can no longer be avoided. She will eventually grow into adulthood, and may very well make her own decision to fight. However, His Majesty does not believe that time is now. But if she someday meets true allies with whom she wishes to link her fate, His Majesty wants to give her that option. I beg of you: protect this sylvan's future, and spare King Alberius from his one and only fear! The sylvan's name is Cleo, and she is a good person. Perhaps even the best of us. King Alberius... Mym... *sniff* I'm glad we heard that, Cleo. No matter how much time passes, I never feel myself worthy of that man. To think he planned this for me so long ago... *sniff* Thank you, My King. Truly. You treasured me even more than I did myself. You gave me such happy times...

Episode 5

Finding Happiness

*sigh* What a nice breeze. And the view here is truly lovely. Hey! Cleoooo! What's wrong, Euden? Huh? Oh, nothing. I was just wondering where you went. There's been a lot of action swirling around you lately, after all. Heh. I suppose that is true. I'm surprised to find you out here just... Well, just relaxing. I found myself wishing to look upon the castle with new eyes. To...look at it? Yes. Of late, I've found myself wholly in love with this place. Actually, that might be misleading; it is not the PLACE that I love. For me, the Halidom is no mere castle. It is a location filled with memories. You've spent most of your life here, haven't you? Indeed. The vast majority of my memories with King Alberius took place right here. So much happened back then, good and ill alike. Then our eternal parting, followed by my serving as the guardian of the Mistholt. There is much I forgot during those long years. I see. But then I found all of you. Since that day, we have amassed a great number of allies. Now we are a group that eats together, trains together, and even takes the time for the occasional festive moment. The Halidom has become a lively place, and each day is a new delight. There are days I actually forget the isolation I felt all those long years. I think there's quite a lot in store for us yet. I'm sure some of it will be pain. But my wish is for you and all the others to enjoy happy lives. And to that end, I'm going to work hard. You have already given me more happiness that I mayhap deserve. However, I love nothing more than seeing you strive to bring that same happiness to all the people of this land. And I shall do my part by protecting you and the Halidom. Until now, fighting for you was a mission—a duty. And that is never going to change. But even if that duty no longer existed, I would still want to fight. Not for the sake of a mission, but to protect everyone in the castle. And you are at the center of all that happiness, Euden. Which is why I will not let you die. I will see you returned to this castle no matter what may come. So please, let me fight at your side until the very end. Let me protect what is precious to me by my OWN sweat and toil. Of course, Cleo. We'll keep fighting together AND we'll return home together once we're done. It's a promise we make on our friendship.
