Dragon Story Episodes
A Friend Eternal

Once there was a count's daughter

whose lands were beset by fiends,

causing her to lose family and home.

Finally, she fled to a nearby territory

ruled by a friend of her father.

She walked for days upon end, until

darkness and exhaustion threatened

to claim her. But just then, she saw

an old empty castle in the distance,

and was able to slip through its gate.

As she entered the empty great hall,

a chill ran down her spine—for it was

lined with taxidermied humans!

Then, five words echoed out in

the hall: "Do you like my friends?"

The inhuman voice terrified the girl,

but she found the strength to reply.

"I needed a shelter from the night,"

she said. "Pray forgive my intrusion."

"Eee hee hee!" laughed the voice.

"I am not mad at you, dear girl.

In fact, I was just wishing I had one

such as you I could call my friend."

"For it is dark in here, and ever so

lonely—but I would not be lonely

if I had more friends. Will you not

remain and be my friend eternal?"

"I would be happy to be your friend,"

responded the girl in a trembling

voice. "But not like the others who

you named friend—I will not spend

eternity as such a horror."

"And yet your life is short," replied the

voice. "I will have you as a friend for

only fifty years or so, which will pass

in a moment. Would you not prefer to

live forever as my other friends do?"

"I have seen your other friends," said

the girl, "and I know they cannot

speak, being stuffed as they are.

How boring that must be for you!"

"And yet, an eternity of silence is

better than the pain of your loss."

These words chilled the girl to her

bone, for they gave her a sense of

how lonely immortality truly was.

And while she was not immortal,

the girl also knew the pain of loss—

for just recently had everything she

knew and loved been torn from her.

She had set out to right that wrong;

to find a way to dispel her newfound

loneliness and start a family anew—

which was why she could not afford

to spend eternity as a mannequin.

And so the young girl steeled her

spine and began the discussion

that would determine her fate for

all time...

Surrounded by stuffed humans,

the girl looked on with fear at the

mistress of the castle—who

resembled nothing less than a little

girl of roughly her own age.

Though the mistress looked at her

with love, the girl knew she would

be stuffed and mounted unless she

was able to convince her otherwise,

so she opened her mouth and said:

"I know you want lots of friends,

but if you make me into one of your

dolls, I will be a poor friend to you."

"Yet if you release me, I will have

fifty years in which to start a family

and have many children of my own."

"If you let me go, I promise to tell

my children about you. They will do

the same for their children in turn,

which ensures you will always have

friends who remember you fondly."

"Eee hee hee!" replied the mistress.

"Then I will have friends everlasting!"

Overjoyed, she released the girl the

very next day.

Years later, the girl was married, and

blessed with many fine children.

The count's lineage, which had been

so close to vanishing, now flourished.

She kept her promise to the mistress,

telling each of her children the story

of that fateful night in the castle—for

she believed that was the source of

all the good fortune in her life.

And yet, she could not fully rejoice,

for while her many heirs brought her

endless happiness, she was unable

to forget the loneliness she felt in the

voice of the mistress.

The girl grew old. Her children and

grandchildren married. And one day,

she left her home and went to the

castle, never to return. Did it soothe

her lonelieness? Alas, none can say.
