Episode 1

A Loyal Blade

HAAAAH! Bah! Talk about your total screw-ups. There was only supposed to be a few fiends here, not a damn horde! We're not going to get anywhere like this. But people are counting on us. We can't withdraw now. Well, well. Look what we got here. You! Hey there, Prince. Hey there, prince pals. Everybody's still breathin', yeah? You're Addis, the samurai from Hinomoto. What are you doing here? Just followin' orders. Ieyasu ordered you to come here? KEEYAAAH! Looks like the details'll have to wait. Got ourselves some fiends to slay first. My blade strikes as swift as the wind; confusion will be the last thing you know! HAAAAAARGH! By Ilia! How reckless of him to simply charge into the horde like that! No, wait. Look... He's dodgin' all their attacks! That's all well and good, but merely dodging attacks will not assure victory! I think he's doing more than dodging... GRAAAAAGH! Interesting... The moment they miss, he responds with an attack. He's cutting them down like ripe wheat! GRAAARGH! Last one, is it? Looks like you might actually be able to put up a fight. Yeah, okay. You got some skill. But my blade won't be blunted by the likes'a YOU! I wield this sword for justice, beast! GRAAARGH! HAAAAAH! GAAAARGH! Taste my blade. Graaaaaaagh... I almost cannot believe my own eyes; you slayed their entire number! It was hypnotic... Eh, it was nothin' special. I may walk the path of the blade, but I got a ways to go. By the way, you said something about following orders earlier, right? Yeah, Master Ieyasu is concerned about you folks. Guess he wants to try'n help you out, what with the whole "fightin' for peace" thing you're all so into. So you came here to... Lend a hand, yeah. ...On his orders. Bwaa ha ha! That's great! We'll be stronger than a whole herd'a oxes with you at our back! But is it acceptable for an attendant such as you to be so far from his master? Eh, I wouldn't worry yourself about that. Master Ieyasu's even tougher than me. Plus, I feel the same way he does. Some folks know what's right and still don't do it, which makes 'em no better than cowards. But you guys actually act— and that's somethin' I can get behind. Well, I'm grateful for the support— from both you AND Hinomoto. Right! Now that everybody's settled, let's head back to the castle and throw this lug a welcome party! A welcome party, eh? That'd be swell. That said, before we all party and pass out, I better introduce myself all proper-like. I'm Addis, attending officer to Master Ieyasu. I come here from Hinomoto in the name of justice, and will ever wield my blade in service to the Halidom. Right then! That's that. Now let's go see about that party you mentioned.

Episode 2

Showing Gratitude

*yawn* Goodness, I'm still tired. Well, I'd better get the fire going... Mornin'. Eek! Addis?! Didn't realize I was so surprisin'. Apologies; I didn't think anyone other than myself was awake. Not many folks up at sunrise, I guess. You gettin' ready to start breakfast? I am. And you? Waitin' to greet the prince. Isn't this a bit early for a meeting? I rise before my master and take time to dress so I can greet him in a flawless condition. That's how it is when you serve. Plus, a guy who's refreshed and rarin' to go in the morning is more reliable than some bleary-eyed joker, yeah? You're making me feel more alert already. Fortuitous. What say we greet the prince with a little bow together, then? That afternoon... HAAAAH! YAAAAH! Whew! Let us end today's training here. ...I must admit, Addis, your skill with a blade is extremely formidable. You're no slouch with that poker, either. Pretty handy to have someone around who can wield a weapon like that. I'm humbled and honored at the chance to cross blades. You have my thanks. The honor is mine. However, there's no need to thank me for sparring with you. 'Course there is. Every fight I experience makes me stronger; it'd be wrong not to express my thanks for that. Well, in that case, let me thank you formally as well. My skills improved during our last match, and for that I am grateful. My thanks. ...Right then. One errand down. Cleo said she was treatin' us to a real feast tonight, so let's hurry back. *sniff* Hold on a tick, yeah? My sniffer found somethin'. *sniiiiff* Yeah, it's comin' from that shop over there. Let's go check it out! We got a feast waitin' for us at the castle. Let's just get back to that. Bwa ha ha! Ol' Ranzal NEVER turns down a second meal! C'mon, it'll only take a sec. Don't be such a fuddy-duddy. I ain't a fuddy-duddy; Cleo's just workin' her tail off making food for us. You really wanna wander back all bloated and gassy and say you ain't hungry? No, but I... I mean, the food smells so... Ah, hell. Yer right. I was bein' rude. Then if we're done with this little crisis, let's make for the castle already. You're always so respectful, Addis. Are all samurai from Hinomoto like that? Nah, not everybody. We've got plenty'a folks who come at my master like a pack of wild boars. Honestly, before I went to Hinomoto, I was a pretty tactless ruffian myself. Didn't have the first clue when it came to manners and honor and all that. You're not from Hinomoto? Nope. I was born in a small country a long way from both there and here. Just a real garbage dump of a place, if I'm bein' totally honest. Place was poor in both money and heart. If you had a crumb'a food to your name, you fought like hell to keep it. That's why I took up the sword—to survive. I lashed out at anyone and everyone, and hurt a lot of folks along the way. That's hard to believe. Yeah, I'm a different guy now. A merchant eventually gave me a chance, and I took a job guardin' his ship. 'Course it sank on the way to Alberia. Good grief! Yep. When I came to, I found myself washed up on the shore of Hinomoto. Some government fellow arrested me for enterin' the country illegally. Tried to tell 'em what happened, but they didn't care. Probably woulda ended up with my head on a pike if not for him. Him? You mean... Master Ieyasu, yeah. He believed my story and told the government folks to let me go. Then he gave me work as a guard, since I had no place else to go. So that's how you came to serve him? You got it. And sure, I owe him for savin' my life and givin' me a job and all that, but there's more to it. I learned an entirely new way of existence from watchin' him. I never would have got that in my old life. I learned true love and respect from him. Learned what it means to be a samurai and why it's vital to protect the peace. Made me realize I wasn't goin' through this life alone. So the value I place on manners now is my way of showin' gratitude. Kind of a silent thank you, if you know what I mean. Your manners ARE your gratitude... That's a remarkable way of looking at things. I may need to adopt it. Too bad all that politeness can't scrub the rough talk outta my speech! Bwa ha!

Episode 3

The Word of a Samurai

So this is your local cuisine, eh? Pretty good chow—we don't really have flavors like this in Hinomoto. I'm glad you like it. This is actually one of my favorite places to take people. Halp! Haaaaalp! My village is being attacked by fiends! I got away but everyone else is still there! I need a mercenary or a soldier or a constable or something pleeeeease! Oh no! I'll help ya out, girly...if ya gots the coin what to pay me for my trouble. I'll give you everything I have! Please just help them! Right then! We got ourselves a deal. Where this town'a yours at? Just beyond the mountain over there. Cor, but that's a long way off! Considerin' how long it took ya to get here, yer village is already worm's food. Ain't no need for me to hustle all the way there to find that out. Th-that's not true! I know they're alive! Nah, best that ya move on with yer life. What say you'n me forget about all this business and go get somethin' to eat? Unhand me, sir! I have to help my father and the rest of my village! HAH! Gwargh! Are you all right? Y-yes, thank you. Show me the way to your village. I'll save 'em. R-really?! Hmph! Looks like some clown's tryin' to horn in on my payday. Yer a fool to go there! That place is dead, and ya damn well know it! I don't care about the opinion of a coward. When someone needs help, you help. That's just the way of it. Urk... I'm coming too. Thank you both so much! C'mon. We better hurry. HAAAAH! GYAAAAA! Things are worse here than I thought. No... Where is everyone?! These fiends are struttin' around like they own the damn joint, and there's not a sign of any people left... Still, that ain't no call for me to sheathe my sword. HAAAH! GRAAAARGH! UWWAAARGH?! Addis? ADDIS! I-impressive attack there, friend... Uuurgh... Oh no! He's hurt! ...REALLY hurt! Heh. That? Just a scratch, is all. I'm only gettin' warmed up. That terrible man was right. This IS hopeless... What? There's no one here. The fiends have clearly... Please, you must stop fighting now. There's no need for more people to die. 'Scuse me? Are you seriously sayin' that? What...? I told you. I'm gonna save your people. I'm a samurai. I don't break my word. And if I ain't givin' up, you can't either! *gasp* Right then. Let's take these fiends down! My blade is swift as the wind, fiends... and you'll meet your end on its edge! HAAAAAH! *pant* *pant* GRRRRR! Taste my blade. Gwaaaargh... Oh my gosh! You did it! ...Ow. Mighta pushed it a little there. I may be shaking, but we did it. Now we can take our time and search for the townspeop... Wait, do you hear that? It's more fiends! That ain't fiends. ...It's people. We heard it get quiet and came out of hiding to see what happened. Father! My child! You're alive! Where have you been, Father? Hiding in the mayor's basement along with the rest of the villagers. Looks like everyone is safe. Seems so. More importantly, what happened here? Who killed all these fiends? It was these two men right here! We owe them both our liv... Huh? Where did they go? ...Are you really okay with sneaking away like this? If we'd stuck around, she woulda tried to pay us—then the whole village woulda tried to empty its coffers. They'll need that coin to rebuild, and tryin' to turn them down woulda been a hassle. You impress me more and more, Addis. Eh, ain't nothin'. Oh, and sorry for draggin' you along on my unpaid volunteerism. Don't apologize. I wanted to help. In that case, it's much appreciated.

Episode 4

Old Friends

The prince and his friends have been tracing the steps of a black market fence and thief... According to local rumor, the black marketeer tends to appear in this area. We should split up and look for clues. Yep. Let's find this creep and bag him fast. Addis? Aw, no hells-damned way! Is that you, Addis?! Domingo?! Is that you?! Addis, old friend! You're ALIVE! I thought you went down with the ship! Thought you were fish food as well. The hell are you doin' here?! I'm a businessman, same as ever. Looks like you cleaned up real nice. Yeah, I'm a samurai of Hinomoto now. Helpin' out at the Halidom at the moment. Heh. Good to hear you're still waving a sword around like always. Speaking of which, I might have a little business proposition for you. Just like the old days, eh? What needs guarding? Well, turns out I've sorta gone into business with the local thieves guild. And since I don't exactly trust 'em, some extra muscle won't go amiss. A thieves guild? What the hell kinda work are you doin'?! They bring me goods and I sell 'em for a tidy profit. Pretty basic stuff, actually. Hold on. YOU'RE the black marketeer? But how?! What happened to keepin' your nose clean like in the old days?! Honest business is a sucker's game. This pays ten times what I make playing things straight. As a samurai, I can't take part in a criminal enterprise. "Criminal enterprise"? Well, la-de-DA! Maybe you should think back about who gave you the chance to leave that lousy country you used to call home! Wouldn't be right for a high-and-mighty samurai like you to leave debts unpaid. ...... Addis? Who are you talking to? Are those the Halidom folks? Bah, they look like just the type to be into truth and justice and all that. ...Leave, Domingo. While you can. You don't have to tell me twice. Still, if you're letting me go, that must mean you're interested, so meet me on the main road tonight after dark. Who was that man, Addis? It looked like you knew him. That was the merchant who first hired me on to guard his ship. The one that sank? That's the one. I haven't seen him since; never expected to run into him here. Anyway, we were just chattin' about old times. Let's finish this up. ...Did something seem off about Addis today? Once he ran into that old friend of his, he did seem rather...unsettled. Well, I suppose he has no duty to reveal every detail of his life to us. We got trouble. Addis is gone. What?! Left this letter behind, too. "I know this is selfish, but there's something I have to do now. I hope you can forgive an old ruffian." What could he be talking about...? Heh. I knew you'd come, old friend. Who's the entourage? My other bodyguards. In this line of work, the more people at your back, the better. This the warrior you told us about, Domingo? Sure is. Lemme introduce you to your new colleague—my old friend, Addis. I'm not joining you, Domingo. Wanna run that by me again? I have the life I do because of you, and I owe you for that. But that's why I've gotta set you straight. You're in the wrong here. Where the hell is THIS coming from? And why'd you let me go this afternoon if you were just going to hassle me later? I didn't want the prince or his people involved in this. It's between us. Give this up, Domingo. Let this life go and atone for the crimes you've done. Oh, and just trust that you'll let us all walk away scot-free? I don't think so. Sorry it had to come to this, but...HAH! Gaaah! I'm gonna give you two choices here: Nod your head and do what I say, or shake your head and lose it. Urgh... I'll never kneel to scum like— AAARGH! Well, well. This is SUCH a shame. I invited you here because I believed in you, old friend. You know that, right? That's how I know you're not lost. How there's still good in—RRRGH! Come on, Addis. How long are you going to keep making me do this? My answer ain't gonna change, Domingo. Might as well kill me and save some time. I thought you said this guy was some great warrior—he ain't even fighting back! I didn't come here to fight; I came here to save my friend. Threatening him with my blade wouldn't turn his heart around. ...... Ah, to hell with this. I got things to do. HAAAAAAH! HAH! Addis, are you okay?! What the...?! What're YOU doing here?! Er, you ran away and left a mysterious note, remember? We're here looking for you. You chumps made a big mistake tryin' to work over our friend here! Oh, you wanna test your luck, pal? Let's go! Gya! These people are so strong! Looks like you're the last one... S-stay back! Get away from me! AAAGH! Stop swingin' yer sword around like a crazy person and fight already! Apologies, but I can't let you attack him. You're gonna PROTECT this scumbag? He was ready to kill you! Maybe so—but I still owe him. Old friend, I... Fine! Fine. I'll give up the thieving life... AND the piles of money that come with it. I found a new career once—no reason I can't go and do it again. Oh, and thanks. ...Old friend. So long. Well, now that we got THAT wrapped up, what say we head back to the castle? Not yet. I fled the castle without leave, and deserve to be punished for it. Don't be absurd. Just come back already. No. An insolent man who would leave his master's side for selfish reasons is a stain on all samurai. I must be punished! You acted on your convictions, Addis. I can't punish you for that. If that's not enough for you, then just keep fighting for my cause. I can't believe you're just forgivin' me... I won't forget this, Prince. Not ever!

A Promise Forged

I know I asked you here early this morning, Prince, but I'm grateful you came. It's no problem. What can I do for you? I've been at your side for a while now, and I've really come to admire you. But I need to know more. I need to know your heart. I need a duel. Why a duel? A person's blade holds something that can't be seen or even put into words. It holds their entire way of being. When you cross blades with a person, you can feel that being in your very soul. I realize I'm bein' impertinent, but please... I need to do this. Fight me! Show me your true self! Very well, Addis. I'll show you everything. I'm humbled and honored, Prince. And now...hold nothin' back! HAAAAAH! *pant* *pant* You fought well. *huff* *huff* It's just as I thought... No—even MORE than I thought. What you think when you wield a sword? The burdens you bear while carryin' it? I felt it all. Every last bit. Bwa ha ha! It's burnin' in my chest even as we speak! I haven't felt this way about someone since I met Master Ieyasu! I'm flattered, Addis. Ah-ha! THERE you are! Cleo wants to know what you two chuckleheads want for lunch. Notte, I just got done dueling Addis. Eating is the last thing on my mind. Same. I need a breather—or three. Fine then, we'll just deliver it. Sandwiches are good, yeah? If this is going to happen regardless, I'd actually prefer a rice ball. Oh, and make it salty. ...Oh yeah, this is the good stuff! Yeah, the salt is really picking me up. You know, Prince? This Halidom of yours is pretty great. Nice weather, good food— and the folks ain't bad neither. They're all a buncha big-hearted, tolerant types, and that appeals to me. It's like Hinomoto in that way. That's why I wanna help the Halidom. ...And why I wanna help you. I'm glad to hear you say that. We'd be honored to have you. Then as proof of my oath to you, let steel strike steel. You mean our blades? It's a ritual among samurai of Hinomoto. We strike our blades together and forge our new promise inside the sound. A promise made in this way is one you must protect—even at the cost of your life. Will you give me this oath? I will.
