An Unseen Servant

Guys what hide in the shadows and pop up behind ya ain't ever good news! He could be one'a the Empire's assassins! You mistake my intentions, sir. If my presence was hidden, it is purely out of habit. For you see, I am a shinobi. I have no intention whatsoever of harming Master Euden. Nice story. Still don't trust ya. Now step away from him, unless ya wanna do this the hard wa... Uh, where's my axe? You are looking for this? You little... When did you— I did not come here to fight, sir. You mentioned a request, right? Let's hear it. I ask that you accept your humble servant Jurota into your service, master. You can't possibly trust this guy, Euden. Everything about him is suspicious. AND he's a damn axe thief! If you're as skilled as you seem, I'd be happy to hire you on. AXE THIEF! Ya can't just go hirin' on random strangers without knowin' the first thing about 'em! That's a fair point. ...Loud, but fair. Why do you want to serve me, Jurota? I cannot say, my lord. I avoided any of the major organs. You should be alive for a while yet. Ngh-GAH! Curse you...Jurota! Yours will not be an easy death... And you will know my fury in every moment of it! Jurota, stop that at once! We do not torture people! I am afraid this is one order I cannot heed, master. I have long awaited the chance at revenge upon my enemies; I'll not let it slip by. Revenge? Then you still harbor a grudge... Of course. It is one I'll not forget until I've exacted revenge upon every last one of those who betrayed me. ...... What grudge is he talking about, Jurota? ...I was betrayed by those who served the same master as I. The selfsame master who presently plots to see your life ended. That is why your humble servant entered into your service... So that I might greet each of my former brethren with a blade. Then this is all about revenge? So when you said you'd come to protect me, that was a lie? I spoke no lie, master. I have every intention of cutting down all who would threaten your life. ...... I have told you the truth entire, master. Should you wish me gone, you need only say the word, and I shall obey. I will find another means by which to gain my vengeance.

The Betrayed Retainer

Now di— The only fool here is you. What assassin fails to realize there is an enemy standing right behind them? J-Jurota?! Stop! Stay away from me! Then you are aware of what fate awaits would-be killers who cross my path. N-no, Jurota! l apologize for what we did to you! It was wrong! WE were wrong! Please... Yours will not be an easy death. First, I will remove your— ENOUGH, Jurota! I've told you before that I will not abide needless cruelty! ...Well, I suppose the sort of assassin who would grovel for forgiveness is poor fodder for my vengeance. Begone from my sight! Slither back to your hideaway and relay a message to those who betrayed me... Tell them that the next time they come, they must bring everyone. That way I may sate my thirst for revenge with the lot of you. Now, GO! Before my patience wanes. Eaaaagh! Er... Thank you. For letting him go. And for protecting me. I require no thanks. I let him live this day. On the next, he will find no such mercy. Why are you so focused on revenge? If you don't wish to tell me, I won't press the matter... But I want to know more about you— as an ally AND a friend. You would name me friend even knowing you are being used as a tool for my retribution? ...Very well. It is a grim tale, but I will tell it all the same. Before I entered your service, I was a shinobi loyal in body, mind, and spirit to another master. No matter the challenge, I performed any task I was given to prove my faithfulness. But my success bred jealousy among my peers—and in the end, they betrayed me. They told our master that I plotted against him in secret. ...He believed them. Even after all that you'd done? He cast me out without hesitation. Long years of faithful work did not stay his hand so much as a moment. I lost everything. My place in the world... My sense of loyalty... Hate was all that remained. And vengeance is my only road to walk. I see no meaning in continuing to live, save in meting out justice to those responsible. Thank you for telling me that. Our circumstances are similar in some ways. I, too, was stripped of my rightful place, and had that which I held most precious stolen from me. You've endured this loss as well, master? I see... Truly, it is a strange connection we share.

A Futile Notion

Just as you requested. Even you cannot hope to stop this many blades at once. ...Heh. Do we amuse you? I have waited for this moment for so very long, my former brothers. At last, every viper who betrayed me is within reach—and ready to receive the cold vengeance he is due! Jurota, wait! They're too many for us to handle alone. We need to call for the others and— NO! This is my fight. I will not share it, nor will I be stopped! No, Jurota. You'll— Rrrgh?! You don't have the leisure of worrying about others. Your life ends here as well! Nnrgh... *pant* *cough* *huff* *heave* I'm the last one standing...? Your skill with a blade always was the stuff of nightmares. But even you can't move in that state... You're dead on your feet! If my arms and legs won't heed me... I will open your throat with my teeth! If my life is...the price of vengeance... I pay it gladly! Then you die a failure! NO! Rgh, Euden! Wait! Coward! Jurota! Are you all right?! Euden... You didn't need to do that. I brought this situation upon myself. I have no right to ask that any intervene on my behalf... A man needs no reason to save a life. Least of all a friend's. You are far too sentimental. But you HAVE saved my life, and for this, I thank you. No thanks needed. I did it for my own selfish reasons. You are truly a curious fellow, master. Had I served you from the start, perhaps... No. A futile notion, now. We had best return to the Halidom.

Fair enough. Then I suppose you've never tried...this? ...Bread scorched on the fire? No. I have not tried ＂this.＂ Most of us call it ＂toast,＂ but yes. Cleo made it. And you're certain it wasn't poisoned? Poisoned? Cleo? ...Heh. She's a bit strict at times, but there's no worry of poison. Enjoy! *munch* Mmm. Good, eh? Be sure to tell her. She'll appreciate it. My master still treats his humble servant as a comrade. What do you mean, ＂still＂? We've been comrades since you joined us, and that isn't changing. Master Euden? I have a request. Oh? This is unusual. Will you allow me to enter your employ? To serve you with honor and faith? Like I said, that's been the case since you first— No. Until now, I have remained at your side to further my pursuit of vengeance. That is not true loyalty. ...I have been as this flame. Animated by a singular hunger to consume my foes as that fire does wood. But the flame within me has cooled over the time I have served at your side. Though that may be in part due to your uncanny ability to jump in just as I prepare to finish my prey. I guess I was less than subtle about that. It has allowed me to see truth. Vengeance is a hungry thing precisely because it is hollow. It births nothing and holds no meaning. It simply...consumes. So I wish to wield this blade now not for vengeance, but in the service of my new master. Not to kill, but to protect what is dear to me. Jurota, you haven't been listening. I see... It was a request beyond what I deserve. No! I've been saying this whole time that you're already part of this team! ...I am unworthy of this. I'm grateful for your faithful aid, Jurota.
