Episode 1

The Fiend-Hating Knight

After catching word that a village was under attack by the imperial army, the prince and his friends hurry to the scene. But when they arrive... There are slain fiends lying everywhere. I wager they were pressed into service to fight on behalf of the Empire. And recently, too—this fiendblood ain't even dry yet. Whoever did this knows their way around a sword. See how clean the cuts are! But where is this person now, and what happened to the imperial army? Have you also come to save us? Yer from here, yeah? Care to tell us what went down? A knight came and told us to hide in the church. We only recently emerged to find...all of this. This knight must have driven off the imperial army and slain the fiends. I saw her from the window! She killed all the fiends, then ran into the woods! Then the army all chased after her. Thus preventing further damage to the village. Most admirable indeed. Ya thinkin' what I'm thinkin', boss? We enter the woods and find this knight? Of course I am. Let's go! ...Blast! Who IS this woman?! Her blade is like lightning! Abandon this foolishness and withdraw from the village if you value your lives. Big talk—but let's see how big you are when you face THIS! ...Bring it out, boys! I shall interpret that response as refusal. Have at you! Damn! She's a tough one, all right! And somehow familiar... I've brought it, Commander! I just have to... Wait. WAIT! NOOOOO! Graaaaagh! Still more fiends? Fie! This one is far larger and more aggressive than the others; you don't stand a CHANCE! You would willingly rely on beasts that trample your own men underfoot? Cost of doing business, love. You daft fools have no idea how truly dangerous fiends can be! ...Wait. I know who you are now! Graaagh! GRAAAAAGH! Aaaah! Heh. This thing can't wait to fight! Right! Fall in behind the fiend, men— and for hell's sake, don't get trampled! This is a powerful foe indeed, but I shall not give in! We've got your back! Who are you? Raaaargh! I think the intros can wait, yeah? Now get over here, ya dumb fiend! The prince joins the fray? Excellent! Go, my fiend! Destroy them all! How can something this big not leave us a single opening to strike?! I shall make your opening by serving as a decoy. Use this chance to lay it low! Come, fiend! I shall be your opponent! Damn, look at her go! She's close enough to that thing what to smell its breath! But she's keeping it engaged. This is our chance! Haaaah! Gaaaah... Looks like yer the only one left, bud. Still itchin' for a fight? You'll pay for this, traitorous prince! As will you, fiend-hating rebel! ...Fiend-hating rebel? It's what they call me. And he called you the traitorous prince. That would make you... Yes, I'm Prince Euden. Truly?! It is an honor to finally meet you, Your Highness! Er...thanks? But there's really no need to bow to me like that. Maybe just, um, start by telling me who you are? My name is Lea, and I am a former knight of Alberia. Lea... I know that name. There was a special division of the knights that was dedicated to fighting fiends, and she was their ace. Hey, I remember those guys! Tough as nails, all of 'em! I heard plenty of tales about their leader. Guy was really supposed to be somethin'! ...... How did you come to be seen as a rebel? Now that the Empire has seized the wheel of power, they use fiends as a part of their military operations. They seek only to strike fear into the hearts of the people, which I find unconscionable. When I protested to my superiors, they named me a traitor and ordered my immediate execution. So ya took off rather than get the noose? Sucks, but I get it. Judging by how you reacted when you found him, I assume you have been looking for Euden? Indeed I have. I spent my early days on the run slaying fiends I happened across, and at some point caught wind of a certain prince's daring exploits. The tales of you taking up the sword for your people moved me deeply. I knew you had to be the one who inherited the true spirit of Alberia. Will you grant me the honor of fighting at your side, Highness? Are you kidding? We'd LOVE to have you. Er, but we're all friends here, so if you want to stick around, maybe ease up on the formality and bowing and...so forth. B-but Your Highness is royalty! I must show deference to your station! And if that royalty orders ya NOT to treat him like royalty, ya kinda gotta suck it up and do it, yeah? V-very well. I shall endeavor to be less...er...formal. Then let us return to the village. I imagine everyone will want to know that the army has retreated. And then we'll throw us a welcome party for Lea! Yeeeee-haw! Must you get so carried away by every little thing, Ranzal? Heh. Let's just get back, all right? (I shall not let you down, Father. I shall see that your good works continue at this prince's side.)

Episode 2

Letter from an Old Friend

Haaaah! Well enough! That, as they say, is that. Shall we back to the castle now? I continue to be impressed by your skills, Lea. There is much I can learn from you. Me too. (Still, I can't get over the fury in her expression when she fights fiends. She's like a whole different person!) Hmm? Oh, I think you dropped something. It looks like an old doll of some kind? Ah! Th-that's mine! Here you are, then. Thank you so much, Elisanne. Looks like it's pretty important to you. I have many a treasured memory associated with this doll. Merely looking at it reminds me of why I still fight. Oh? ...It matters not. Let us hurry back. Well, if you say so. Welcome back, everyone. Please make certain to wash your hands before you eat. ...Especially you, Ranzal! Ah, Lea. A letter and parcel arrived for you earlier. Oh, heavens! Is it important? This comes from an old friend of mine who now makes a living traveling the world as a mercenary. "I'm sorry for not contacting you in so long, Lea. I'm living the way I always did—fighting to protect the things I care about." "I heard you're serving at the Halidom now, so I enclosed a little congratulatory gift. I hope your new friends enjoy it." That parcel must be the gift. Let's see... Whoa! It's crammed full'a tasty-lookin' berries! Heh. I'm glad you like it. Now then, let us see about the rest of this letter... "There is something else I need to tell you. Do you recall the ebon fiend from ten years ago? The one we thought vanished?" No! Er, are you all right, Lea? ...Forgive me, Cleo, but I shall be missing dinner. I fear I have lost my appetite. Whatever came over her? *chump* *horf* These berrief are GREAT! ...Muh? Oh hey, there's another letter hiding' at the bottom of the package. It's addressed to "Lea's New Friends." I'm guessin' that's us, yeah? Well, let's see what it says... ...Enter. I'm sorry for coming so late at night, but we need to talk. About the letter, yes? Yes. I actually heard about the ebon fiend back when I lived in the palace. It was said to have terrorized the continent before being defeated in battle by a brave knight who lost his life in the process. That knight led a unit dedicated to the slaying of fiends, so I'm guessing you knew him at least somewhat? He was my father. Ten years ago, he and his knights were returning to the capital when they encountered the ebon fiend attacking an impoverished village. They attempted to put it to the sword, but its strength was beyond measure. Regardless, my father refused to give in. He did all he could to gain the villagers time enough to escape. They were saved thanks to his efforts, and the wounded creature stumbled off never to be seen again. It was said to be a most fearsome battle. We did not even have a body to bury. All that was returned to us was this doll, which I had made for him as a charm. So that doll is a memento. Looking at it always reminds me of the anger and sadness I felt upon learning of my father's death. Did you join the knights to avenge him? I told myself I was becoming a knight because I admired his way of life and wanted to follow in his footsteps... but that is not the whole of it. I despise fiends with all of my being. So when you suggest revenge as a motive, you are not entirely wrong. ...... My friend's letter mentioned rumors that the ebon fiend has returned once more. If true, I would be the one to slay it. Even if it comes at the cost of my life. I can see how much it means to you. Don't worry. I have no intention of causing problems for any of your people. This is my fight, and I will take it on alone. No. Let us help you. But why? This is a personal matter. If a fiend is wreaking havoc across the continent, that's EVERYONE'S fight. And yet, I would still be dragging you into a fight of my own designs, and I could never abide such. At this point, I don't think you can stop us from helping—especially since your friend specifically asked us to. What? We got a letter as well. It read in part, "I am too far away to help, so you must do so in my place—no matter how much she might protest." Fie! He also expressed doubts as to whether he should have told you about the ebon fiend's return at all. But he knew word of it would most likely reach you one way or the other. That's why he told you, but also why he asked us to help out. He clearly cares for you very much. *sigh* What a meddlesome friend I have. But I suppose you're right. Approaching this fight with the expectation of losing wouldn't be very knightly. Allow me to make a formal request. Your Highness, pray help me find the ebon fiend and avenge my father! We'd be happy to. You have my thanks. If you're going to thank anyone, thank your friend. I definitely should. No matter how much time passed or how far apart we were, it seems he has never forgotten me. A fact for which I am most grateful.

Episode 3

Shadows of the Ebon Fiend

Their mission clear, Lea and the prince continue searching for the ebon fiend. After a number of false starts, their investigation finally begins to bear fruit... This is the location where all the strange fiends have supposedly been sighted. Which means we may learn something about the ebon fiend here as well. Wait, are those...? Blast! Imperial soldiers! What are they doing all the way out here? Nothing good, I expect. Let us follow them. Huh. I wouldn't have thought we'd find a cave here. ...Er, but what is THAT? It appears to be a magical sigil with a lump of fiendflesh in the center. Preparations for the ritual are complete! Excellent! Then let us begin... Fiend of ebon blackened hue, from this flesh you rise anew! What?! ...Well? Did we succeed? Blast and blast again! A total failure! Oh, the physical form is similar enough, but the power is nothing when compared to the original. Well, I guess we'll just have to try again. ...Come with me, fiend! I'll let some other unit figure out what to do with you. What is the meaning of this?! Intruders! Damn! They found us! It's the traitorous prince and that fiend-hating rebel! I would have thought the pair of you too honorable for base eavesdropping. What is your business here? Surely you're not so dense that you cannot see our plan for yourself? We perform the ultimate experiment— we seek nothing less than a perfect copy of the ebon fiend itself! Is that even possible?! Ordinarily, no—but we have a special ingredient that makes the impossible real! Behold, a lump of the ebon fiend's flesh! With this, I will most certainly find a way to return it to the world once more! Where did you get that?! Why, it is a gift from your father! You lie! During the battle between your father and the ebon fiend, he managed to hack off a rather substantial chunk of its flesh. It was soon found to contain startling regenerative properties. Fearing it might be used for ill, the kingdom hid it away. And you just decided to come along and take it for yourselves? Precisely! But alas, all we've managed to create thus far are pale imitations. So that's where the rumors of the ebon fiend are coming from... The ebon fiend is arguably the most deadly of all fiends—and your father was likely the only one capable of wounding it. So now you see why I say our grand experiment is a gift from him! How dare you... Furthermore, we've pressed the copies into service with units throughout the Empire. While they pale in comparison to the beast they're modeled on, they're still much stronger than the average fiend— and no doubt serving us well as we speak! Our nation owes your father a great debt indeed, young lady! Aaaah ha ha ha! This is not what my father fought for! He didn't give his life for the likes of YOU! Lea, calm down! HAAAAAH! She's mad, this one! We've got her totally outnumbered! Take care of these fools, men! Hang on, Lea! We'll never win here if we don't both work together! Your tongues sully my father's good name, and I will see them removed myself! Look out! Highness! Nnngh... N-no, I'm okay. But we have to start working together if we want to get out of this in one piece! Y-yes, of course! Eeeek! I surrender! I surrendeeeeer! I'll do whatever you say! Then hand over the fiendflesh. A thousand apologies, Your Highness. I am not fit to call myself a knight after surrendering to anger as I did. I'm not sure I could have remained calm if I was in your place, Lea. Anyway, let's get this back to the castle. I'm hoping Midgardsormr may be able to tell us more about the magical sigil. Very well. With the windwyrm's assistance, the prince sealed away the ebon fiend's flesh. ...... Trouble sleeping? I find myself thinking on the past. The day my father died, he had been helping me with my sword training. He promised to do more when he returned, but of course, that never happened. I sometimes catch myself thinking about how we might yet be together now if he had not battled that monster. ...... Still, he gave his life that others might yet live. As the daughter of a knight, I was able to accept that. But now his actions have given birth to new conflict. So what does his sacrifice mean now? Why did he have to die? Your father's sacrifice means just as much as it did on that day, Lea. I want to believe that. Truly I do. His death must have some purpose. It must have made SOME impact in the world. ...Enough. So long as the Empire has other versions of the ebon fiend wandering about, I do not have the luxury of pity. I shall be ready for action tomorrow, Your Highness. And...thank you. I will not let things end like this.

Episode 4

Seeds of Courage

With everyone's help, the prince and Lea begin tracking down all the copies of the ebon fiend that were assigned to the imperial army. These copies we are dealing with sound formidable indeed. Which is why we must move against them before they can do further harm. I think Ranzal should be back from gathering information soon. Bad news, guys—all them ebon fiend copies up'n ran off from the army! What?! Sounds like they're all headin' for the same place, too... The village where Lea's pops died. What? Graaagh! Aaaah! Are you all right?! Y-yes, I'm okay. Whatever could have attracted all these fiends to this place? This is where the original ebon fiend got taken down, yeah? Maybe they've all come back what to settle the score. Then it falls to me to serve as their opponent in my father's stead. Don't get too far ahead of us, Lea. I shall not make the same error a second time, Your Highness. Then let's work together to take these things down for good! *huff* *puff* It is finished. That was a most difficult battle. Still, all of the villagers are unharmed, which is the best we could have hoped for. Indeed, I was able to protect the same town—and people—as my father. Say, are you the daughter of the knight who defended this village ten years ago? If not, she fights with the exact same style! I remember it from when I was a kid. You remember my father? Of course! He saved our lives! We are a poor, simple village, and yet he didn't hesitate to give his life for ours. We'd all be worm's food if not for him. Then his deeds live on in the hearts of all the people here... Hey, guys? Somethin' ain't right. What is it, Ranzal? There shoulda been more fiends than this. Your Highness, look! Ugh. Well, I guess we know where the other fiends are. You cannot be thinking to fight them; we're barely standing as it is! Eh, we can do it. Hell, at least this group ain't as big as the last one. I will fight until the last of these fiends are dispatched. However, all villagers must flee this place at once! But we can't— Just as my father before me, I swear you shall not come to harm. Now go! With me, everyone! Haaah! Damn you! Nnngh! Fie, it has me! Let her go! (Is this how I meet my end? Unable to protect what's important to me? Father!) Have at you! I don't know who threw that stone, but this is my chance! Haaaah! Are you all right, Lea?! *cough* Nothing bruised save my ego. But who threw that stone? Guys, check it out! It's the villagers! ...And a lot of farm tools? Why did you not flee as we bade you?! We'll not leave you! Fighting fiends is scary, but we'll do it if it means protecting what's ours! We'll never again stand by as someone fights and dies for our sake! Now witness a farmer's courage! Haaaaaaaah! Bwa ha ha! They got them fiends shakin' in their boots! ...Or, uh, whatever fiends wear. The sound of their battle cry fills me anew with energy! They're filled with the courage to protect what they care about. THIS is your father's legacy, Lea! Then I shall be equally courageous! We split our forces here, people! All who can handle close combat, follow me and the prince! Everyone else should support us from behind with stones! Got it! This shall be our final battle. Move out! That should be the last of them for true. Yep. Looks like we won the day. We did it! We did it! HIP HIP, HOOORAAAAY! And yet, the village itself is in ruins. Looks like we're going to have company at the Halidom while they rebuild. If that's the case, will you teach us how to fight in the meantime, ma'am? Why would you ask this of me? We want to help you—not just rely on you for protection. Hmm. I don't know. Maybe just start by teachin' some basic self-defense, yeah? Then ya can pull out the ones what got talent and give 'em more advanced instruction. Hell, they had the fiends wettin' themselves earlier—might be ya find a real warrior or three here. But still... Please! We beg you! Your father planted the seeds of this courage, Lea, but that isn't enough. They need skills and knowledge, too. So maybe it's time to pick up where your father left off and teach them. Very well. But I hope you are prepared, for I will be a strict teacher! Thank you, ma'am!

Episode 5

The New Commander

After surviving the terrible fiends' ordeal, the villagers ask Lea to train them in combat. She obliges, and soon a special fiend-fighting unit begins to take shape under her command. Stop! You are moving too far forward! You must draw the fiend to you, THEN press the attack! Yes, ma'am! We've another coming from the side. Can you immobilize it? Of course, ma'am! Haaah! Perfect! Now keep them still and... Hah! That is the last of them. Yeeeah! We did it! You all performed admirably, but there is still great room for improvement. I shall center on those areas where you need improvement when we return home. I pray you are ready for what is to come. Of course, ma'am! Lea's unit fought fiends across the continent. As time passed, large numbers of people came to the Halidom to show their appreciation. We were saved by Lea's Legion, so we were! Seeing them fight filled us with courage. We won't live a day longer in fear. That's why we've come! We're both capable archers—and while we've not battled against fiends before, we want to join up with the Legion! I'll talk to her and see what she says. Thank you, sire! Lea's Legion sure is gettin' popular. We got folks droppin' in here like we're givin' away free mutton. And we're getting people from every social class and walk of life. The more they fight, the more other people want to join them. Then maybe it's time we formalized this thing up proper. That's not a bad idea, Ranzal. Not a bad idea at all... Pray did I hear you correctly, Highness? You wish to formally establish Lea's Legion as an official order of knights? That's right. You'll be based out of this castle and focus on slaying fiends. Anyone will be able to join, irrespective of class and origin. Oh, and you will have my full financial backing. Best part is, yer gonna lead 'em! I am honored you would ask such of me, but do you truly think me up to the task? I lost myself to anger not long ago; that is hardly the emotional temperament that befits a commander. Looks like yer doin' just fine so far. Actually, I think your rough edges make you the perfect leader for this group Pray explain? The people who come here to fight have all faced hardship at the hands of fiends. Many of them are driven by resentment. Some may even lose sight of themselves, just as you did earlier. That makes you the perfect person to show them a better way. But more importantly, these people are only here BECAUSE of you. You filled them with courage just as your father did, so it's only fair you teach them how to walk that new path. ...... You're right. It falls to me to lead them in the right direction. Very well, Highness. I accept. Thank you. Great! Now let's get all the volunteers together for a big celebration! We'll definitely need an inaugural address, so I hope you can prepare something. I fear I am not much for public speaking. Whatever would I even say? Tell them your vision for the new order; what you want Lea's Legion to become. If you can't think of the perfect words to say, just quote someone else's. The perfect words for an ideal order... I have an idea. Soon, the inauguration ceremony for the new order took place in the castle courtyard. Lea looked out at the faces of her volunteers and spoke quietly—but with great conviction. Someone who I deeply respect once said something that stuck with me: "When a knight fights for others, their sword stays behind." As a child, I did not understand the meaning of those words. But meeting all of you here has finally given me that understanding. One wields a sword to protect others. And in doing so, those who are protected go on to become swords of their own. Our battles will light the way for many future guardians to come. That's why we must never let our hearts be filled with anger or sadness. Rather, they must shine with pride—as well as the conviction to do what is right. I shall make this an order that each of you will be proud to fight for. An order whose name is known across the land for its good deeds. Hurray for the commander! Hurray for Lea's Legion! I'm looking forward to this, Lea. You're going to do great things. I shall never let you down, Highness. My knights will know only victory, and I will see the seeds of my father's courage blossom in full!
