A Kind Dragon's Hopes

The dragon Mercury once lived in the

ocean, but after gaining four limbs,

she rose from the sea and supported

the development of a new town.

That town's name was Saint Lotier,

and from a tall hill with a magnificent

view, she watched over both it

and its residents.

But alas, the town's development

was fraught with troubles. There

were natural disasters like floods,

but also countless invasions from

other neighboring countries.

Mercury used the power of water to

keep the town safe, and over the

next century, Saint Lotier developed

into one of the most important cities

on the entire continent.

It became a land of water—vast

and beautiful—and the dragon

treasured it above all else.

In Mercury's compassionate heart,

she began to think of the city like

her own child, and decided there

was nothing she would not do to

ensure its continuing safety.

But one day, a dark-hearted soul

hatched a plot to use that very

kindness to manipulate her.

Mercury watched over the Aquapolis

and thought of it like her own child—

all the while unaware that someone

had dark ambitions to turn this very

love against her.

"Are you sure of this, Harle?"

"I am, Master Emile. The dragon is

fixated with Saint Lotier. If we use

that fact to our advantage, she will

have no choice but to obey us."

"Excellent! Er, how do we do that?"

"I have a cunning plan. Listen well..."

Advised by his subordinate Harle,

Prince Emile came before Mercury

and attempted to enlist her aid.

"I am the sixth scion of the Kingdom

of Alberia," said Emile, "and you WILL

form a pact with me, Waterwyrm!"

"No," responded Mercury. "I will

never leave this land."

"If concern for this land keeps you

here, that is all the more reason to

form a pact with me!" cackled Emile.

"What are you implying?" asked

Mercury with growing alarm.

"My spies inform me that this city will

soon come under attack by an

enemy nation with a thousand ships!"

"I fear not invasion," said Mercury.

"Countless have tried to date,

and I have repelled them all."

"And what if I said this foe will

use impure fiends to do their

bidding—fiends whose mana

will pollute this beautiful sea

of yours long after their deaths!"

"Ah, but I can keep this city safe,"

continued Emile. "I will use the power

of my kingdom to force peace with

these people and stop the invasion...

but only if you join me in a pact."

After much thought, Mercury chose to

form a pact, putting the safety and

prosperity of her child above all else.

Later, Mercury learned that Emile

was not fit to form a pact with her,

and so she chose to form one with

Euden instead.

As she spent her long days at the

Halidom, Mercury often found herself

thinking of Saint Lotier. Was it safe?

How did its people fare?

But despite this, she did not regret

even for a moment forming a pact

with Euden.

For though she worried for her city in

the short term, she believed in the

future of peace and prosperity that

Euden sought.
