Dragon Story Episodes
All That Glitters

In the southern plains of Grastaea,

there live numerous tribes who

worship Zephyr and offer many

goods as proof of their devotion.

Such tributes include wooden

sculptures, young sheep, horses,

and fermented milk—yet a gift of

gold is considered to be an ill omen

indeed. This is why...

Long ago, a tribe that lived by a river

discovered gold dust there and

offered it up as tribute. Zephyr

immediately took a strong liking to

this offering.

"Bring more of this pretty sand!" he

ordered, and so the people brought

as much as they could find. Satisfied,

he then promised the river people

his eternal protection.

Zephyr answered their prayers

and conjured storms to strike their

foes, making the river tribe the

undisputed rulers of the region.

Determined to win even more of

Zephyr's favor, the tribe began

to raid neighboring clans for gold.

Soon, they had forgotten all about

the fiends they once hunted.

The river tribe had won the blessing

and protection of Zephyr. Soon

they became outright thieves who

stole gold from their neighbors in

order to continue currying his favor.

On the day of the summer solstice,

a horde of fiends suddenly

descended on the river tribe,

who desperately implored

Zephyr to save them.

Zephyr heard their cries and took

to the skies. But the mountain of gold

the tribe had collected shone out as

bright as the sun itself.

The dragon was confused, for he had

never seen the sun descend to earth.

But he knew even his dragon's might

could not stand against the power of

the sun, and so flew away.

When night fell and the gold's glare

vanished, Zephyr glided down to

the village of the river tribe—only to

discover the fiends had slaughtered

every last man, woman, and child.

If there is a moral to be learned here,

it is that sacrificing one's humility for

the protection of a dragon can only

lead to destruction.
