(My past is a bloodsoaked one, and such happiness is frankly more than I deserve. And yet, I pray it lasts without end.) Gosh-a-rooty, just LOOK at your face! You've got a smile as sweet as a slice of pumpkin pie, darling! Out on a picnic with the kiddos from the orphanage, eh? Well, lemme join you! Dorothy?! Thank you for telling me where I could find the flowers earlier, Miss Dorothy! You are so darn welcome, sweetie buns! But you better skedaddle now—I hear your big brother's looking for you. Huh? What for? He's got an important errand for you. Hurry up, now! Run like the dickens! Okay! Byeeeee! What are you doing here? The director asked me to check up on you. I am to give a ceremonial prayer and speech in front of THIS many people? I can feel my stomach tensing already... And to think you'll be speaking alongside Archbishop Magnus! Clearly, being the Grand Paladyn is no mean task. He feels that our standing side-by-side as equals will show both perditionists and conservatives that compromise is possible. Some may not take kindly to the notion of compromise between the two factions. I am aware the plan carries risks. Regardless, there is something I wish to convey: Namely, the notion that even if our ideas are different, we can still come to an understanding with each other. The ceremony is about to begin, Grand Paladyn Elisanne. As we discussed, I'll keep an eye on the venue from a distance and apprehend any suspicious individuals right away. Hold nothing back—preach freely and without fear. It is particularly reassuring knowing that you have become my personal guard. And might I say, you are looking rather impressive at the moment. These clothes serve as proof that I am your protector, while the white hood attests to the vow I swore to never again be stained by blood. I was not merely speaking of your appearance. But in any case, I am off. In this land which once knew calamity, we would offer up a prayer together. We pray that we may not be visited by the same tragedies that once befell us, and also for a new era of eternal peace. Looks like the ceremony has started. Hmm? Wait, who is...? Dorothy! Dammit, I lost sight of her! What is she even doing here?! Explosions! At the venue?! Archbishop Magnus, you are a traitor who would take the side of the hated conservatives! May you be consigned to an eternity in the hellfires! That's a perditionist adherent—and he's got some sort of magical implement! WATCH OUT, ALL OF YOU! Hrgh... You... Haaaaah! He dropped the device! Seize him, quickly! Are you all right, Elly?! Yes, it's n-nothing... Hrk! The Grand Paladyn is gravely wounded! We must see to it at once! Damnation! If only I'd not been so far from my post... You there! Where did you get a magical implement of such deadliness?! That woman...gave it to me. Alex gave it to me! How do you know my name, cur?! She sought the assassination! I only did as I was bade! These are lies of the basest sort! Then perhaps you can explain why you were stationed so far from the venue if you knew nothing of what was to come! Hmm... You WERE a good distance from your post at the time of the blast, Alex. That is because I was pursuing a suspicious individual! And what became of this "individual"? ...They escaped. I fear that is a weak tale at best. Alex, personal guard to the Grand Paladyn! I am hereby arresting you under suspicion of attempted assassination! No! You have this all wrong!

Episode 2

Meeting in the Fog

It is taking some time to question the suspect, so you must remain in the guardroom for the time being. And so you are aware, we have guards posted outside the window; I recommend you do not even think about escape. They think me the ringleader of an assassination! How has it come to this? *cough* Goodness, but it's dusty in here! I swear, good help is so hard to find... Dorothy! Don't start squawking like that, darling, or you'll alert every guard for miles! Why are you here? Oh, just to make a little apology. Seems like you're only in this pickle because you were chasing after little ol' me during the ceremony. You may not believe this, but I was only there to see for myself what sort of work you do now that you've hung up your little throat-slitters. Anyway, I'm just sorry as all get-out! This state of affairs is not your doing, so you can save your apology. Well, that's good to—oh, heck! I plumb near forgot to mention it! Not to be the bearer of ill news, but that Grand Paladyn friend of yours looks to be in quite the precarious situation. Explain yourself! Well, I went to check on her before coming here, and the poor thing was doubled over in pain and BEGGING for help. Elisanne, no! Say, that gives me a dilly of an idea: let's go see her! With my help, you'll be able to creep by the guard undetected. I would give anything to help Elisanne, but if I slip away, the suspicion upon me will only grow more intense. Honey, she was looking REAL bad. Poor thing might kick the farm any second now—can you live with yourself if you don't take this chance to say good-bye? Fie, but this is an impossible choice! What should I do...? ...Alex! Over here! We managed to slip away unnoticed. Thank Ilia for this incoming fog. The local types are all holed up inside, what with the explosions and all—but ain't that just a stroke of luck for us! Yes, because it means we can make as much noise as we like without suspicion. ...Doesn't it, Dorothy? Honey, are you really pointing that pigsticker of yours in MY direction?! Inducing a person to kill a target without dirtying your own hands is one of your specialties, is it not? Oh, darling, you have this ALL wrong! Also, hate to mention it, but the longer you point that sword at me, the more likely it is that your friend...you know? Dies alone? Your story about Elisanne rang false on too many levels, Dorothy. She would not succumb to such a wound, nor would she allow even a whimper to escape her lips. You lied to me. ...... You tried to kill the archbishop and frame me for it in order to have revenge for my deigning to leave a former life behind. Oh, honey, you are SO good! Tell me, how long have you known? From the moment you appeared in the guardroom. I know you, Dorothy, and I know you never could resist laughing in the face of someone you framed. But had I made a fuss then and there, it would've gotten the Templars involved. So you pretended to believe me until you had a chance to question me alone! Oh, darling, you are just the BEST! Here I was, all ready to kill you for believing my absurd story, and you've gone and turned the tables! I KNEW the beast was still alive in you somewhere! Oh, but I'm afraid I can't quite put a plus on that A grade of yours. See, honey, there's still one flaw in your deduction. And what would that be? I had no intention of assassinating the archbishop—I just knew the Grand Paladyn would risk her life in order to protect him. But that would mean your real target is... Yes indeed-y! Your little pal, Elisanne. Afraid I'm under some VERY strict orders to see that she takes the ol' dirt nap. Orders from who?! Now honey, you know I can't tell you that! But I will give you one piece of advice: abandon Elisanne now, before all of this starts to turn TRULY ugly. After all, she holds the key to perdition. The what?! ...Alex should be around here! Find her! Blast! The Templars are here! Ta-ta, Alex! Oh, and don't worry—I'll come by and see you again REAL soon. WAIT! Damn it all! I was hoping to capture her and find out the truth behind all of this! Look there, on the ground! It's a bloody dagger! Observe the peculiar shape of the blade. There can be no doubt this is the murder weapon used to kill the perpetrator of the assassination attempt. Damn and damn again! Dorothy must have killed the man to ensure his silence! Alex clearly cast the dagger aside here. Find her at once, or none of us will ever be fit to bear the name of Templar again! I've no wish to cross blades with the Templars. Time to make good my escape! *huff* *puff* I should have eluded my pursuers by now, but I cannot hope to keep running away forever. Dorothy is sure to target Elisanne again, and yet the Templars would rather die than listen to anything I have to say. It will only make trouble for my comrades if I return to the Halidom, so I'll need to capture Dorothy on my own. Ah, but she's a tricky one, and no mistake. Which means the only way to save Elly is to expose the client who requested the assassination in the first place—and in so doing drag the truth into the light. And my clue to finding the client is... After all, she holds the key to perdition. Common sense dictates the "key to perdition" is connected to perditionists, which means it's time for that man and myself to have a little chat. Ho, friend! I am a traveling man of the cloth—pray bless me with your charity. Sorry, Father, but we're barely scraping by as it is. Try someone else. Rrrgh! May they burn in the fires of purgatory! Damned impious wretches! *sigh* To think I was once so close to the position of archbishop and now find myself reduced to this paltry existence. This is all Alex's fault! Ah! Perhaps that person there will take some pity on a poor old man of the cloth. Ho, friend! I am a traveling... Y-YOU!

Episode 3

An Unwelcome Revelation

Two days after the Grissblum bombing...
And you say the man who will know about the key to perdition is in this town? M-my position among perditionists is but a lowly one, so I can't tell you a thing about the key—but he is sure to know! I'll lead you to him! No tricks! Just please don't kill me! I have said nothing about killing you. ...It appears I truly put some fear into you last time. Th-there he is! Right there! You're still getting better, so be careful not to push yourself too hard. I won't. Bye, Grandpa! Excuse me, but are you Klaus, the former librarian of the Ilian Curia Archives? Yes, though I'm well retired at this point. And who might you be, miss? I am Alex, personal guard of the Grand Paladyn, and I come with questions. The Church, is it? Hmm. I suppose that means you'll be asking about the Scrolls of Perdition. *sigh* All I want to do is enjoy what few years I have left, but those blasted things seem determined to prevent it. I have no interest in the scrolls. Instead, I wish to know of the "key to perdition." Begone from here! Please! I must know! I know not where you came to learn of that foul notion, but I'll not speak of it again! The key to perdition is a truth most cruel, not a thing for idle curiosity! Now begone from this place and never return! I am afraid I cannot do that; I have a friend to protect. ...Explain yourself. My friend's life is in danger because she has something to do with the key to perdition. And I would know the truth, that I might be able to cut her free of such oppression. Now tell me what you know, I beg of you! What is the name of this friend? Elisanne. Ah, I see. The tale you would hear is not one to be told in the open. Come into my home. Thank you, sir. W-well enough! Seeing as how my duty is fulfilled, I'll just take my leave... Now then. You are aware of the Scrolls of Perdition, yes? They are ancient documents that state, among other things, that the Other is the offspring of the Goddess Ilia. Indeed—and that interpretation threw the Church into disarray. However, that trouble is nothing compared to what would happen if the complete document were discovered. What complete document? The Scrolls of Perdition are but a portion of a larger text—one that has been kept hidden away from the world. WHAT?! This document evidently records a truth beyond the kinship of Ilia and the Other— one which could upset the very foundations of the world. Afraid of what such a truth would mean, those who discovered the Scrolls kept a portion of them and sealed away the rest. So what, then, is the key to perdition? It is that which will release the seal on the remaining portion of the texts. But this leaves questions yet unanswered, including the location of the full document and what, exactly, the key is. However, the method for obtaining the key has been passed down to a select few. Apparently, the key can be obtained in exchange for the life of one maiden. And that maiden's name is... Not Elisanne! She is likely not even aware of the cruel reality to which she has been burdened. Why her?! I do not know. However, so long as there are those who would seek the remaining portion of the Scrolls of Perdition, this Elisanne's life will remain in grave danger. I cannot believe it... That is as much as I can say, child. I would suggest you hurry to your friend. Though the truth she has been burdened with may be cruel, a friend who cares for her might still mean her salvation. ...Ah! Perhaps HE is the one who is targeting the maiden Elisanne! I must inform the young lady at once. Back when I was an assassin, I went after her as I was commanded. Would you PLEASE listen? I have no quarrel with you! I care not. Now hold still and prepare to die. Between my indignation at her and my ignorance of the burden she bore... Oh, Elisanne. I am so sorry. Aaaagh! Klaus! Nnngh... By Ilia, these wounds are so deep... Who did this to you?! T-take this... A diary? Day 28... Month of the Frostwyrm... No! Stay strong, Klaus! Fight! It was raining too much to play, Grandpa, so I... Huh? Who're you? Are you Klaus's grandson? Er, listen... This here... Why is Grandpa all bloody? Hold, child. Let me expla— M-murder! MURDER! HEEEEELP! Guards! Guards, help! Come at once! Hnnngh! Stop! Give him back! Crossing Blades

Yer gonna wanna make straight up the northern 'ighway. Blimey, that's a 'efty purse for one lady. If only I coulds... Eh? Say, who was that bird what I was just talkin' to?! Things have become quite difficult of late, but I must reach the cathedral regardless. In the former librarian's diary, one of the entries is about a very particular person. In exchange for healing the librarian's grandchild, this person learned how to obtain the key to perdition. You are an old friend of Alex? I sure am, sugar! See, between the time my folks cast me out and my adoptive parents picked me up, I lived a cold, hard life on the streets. That's when Alex and I became thick as... Well, I hate to say THIEVES, so let's just say thick as sweet cream instead! And yet, this is the first I've heard of you. Well enough then, Dorothy. Tell me, what brings you to me this day? I've come bearing a request for you. Seeing as how you once saved Alex, I think it's the kind of thing that ONLY you are gonna be able to pull off. I need you to put a stop to Alex's quest for revenge. I assume you refer to the attempted assassination and subsequent murders? The injured parties are all connected to the Scrolls of Perdition, yes? And I know what the Church had poor Alex do back in her former, uglier days. Poor old Alex could never forgive the perditionists who mistreated her so. I disagree. Alex found a new way to live, and swore to never again tread down the path of vengeance. Oh, honey. I'm afraid there's a former— and I mean VERY former—priest named Nikolai who would disagree with that. Are you saying she killed him?! She was seen at his side when he died. Folks say he begged for his life to the very end, but... Well, it didn't work out. I cannot believe this... Oh, sweetie, I'm so sorry. Sometimes it's really hard to see the evil that swims beneath the surface of a girl, isn't it? All of us have a beast inside us that we do our best to keep tucked away. Supposing for a moment that you are correct and she is plotting revenge. Where would we find her now? My adoptive Templar father had an idea about that, actually. Right now, she's headed for... I heard that you were targeting Archbishop Magnus yet again, this time at a certain cathedral. I don't want to involve you in this, Elly. Go back to the Halidom while you can. Not until I know the truth. It was the archbishop who was behind the bombing of the prayer ceremony. He plots at your assassination. But was the attempt not made on Archbishop Magnus himself? That was a ruse—he knew duty would cause you to sacrifice your life for his own. And what possible motive could he have? He was the man who sought to bring the two sides of the Church together, so why have me killed instead? Well, you see... She is likely not even aware of the cruel reality to which she has been burdened. I...I am not certain. But I AM certain that the archbishop is using a former associate of mine—an assassin—to end your life. He used this same assassin to frame me for multiple crimes—and unless I miss my guess, she is here as we speak snickering at the situation in which I find myself. How deplorable, Alex, that you would try to trick me with such a feeble tale. Then you do not believe me?! Only a child could believe such fancy! Your hatred for the perditionists has clearly twisted you in both mind and soul. I...I thought you were my friend. I AM your friend, Elly! Don't you see? I'm trying to protect you! You really are a beast at heart. THIS is why you framed me, Dorothy! You inspired doubt in Elisanne and goaded her into fighting me so I would do your dirty work and kill her! Well, sure—but I ALSO did it so you would realize you belong back with us in the world of long knives and short lives! Dastard! Honey, honey! You're mad, I get it. But really, I just set the table here. You—and you alone—are responsible for the actions you took after that. I mean, are you really going to go back to tousling some moppet's hair with the same hands that took a friend's life? N-no! I... Yes, my child. Yes. Take the sword which so recently claimed your friend's blood and wield it for the world. This is the finest tribute you can pay the Grand Paladyn. Archbishop Magnus! Thanks to you, I can now obtain the key to perdition and use it to bring peace to all of our adherents. I thought you meant to bring that about through reconciliation with the conservative faction! Such was indeed my intention at first. However, I realized it was pointless to try and persuade those conservatives, slaves to existing values that they are. Thus, I have opted to change tack. Instead, I would make known the truth of our world, and in so doing upend their value system from its very foundations. THAT'S why you killed Elisanne?! All was done in service to true harmony. However, even with the truth staring them square in the face, I suppose there are some who cannot surrender their values. Those who go so far in their foolishness are naught but dead weight to be cut away. But strength is required to purge them— strength like that wielded by an assassin. Come back to us, honey bunny. WE'RE the ones who really need you! Twice did Elisanne show me the way, and then my comrades at the Halidom helped me forge a new life altogether. My past may be drenched in blood, but I walk alongside them now on a path as bright as the sun. THIS is the life I would choose for myself—not yours! I never expected you of all people to be so lovey and gross, sweetie. It is VERY disappointing. I have a new request for you, Dorothy. The fool before you is an obstacle to true harmony. Do purge her with all haste. You heard the man, darling—time to drown this place in a sea of red! Hrk! Such a strong attack! Hey, this is the first time we've fought! And I knew right away that Elisanne believed me, just as I knew that our crossing blades was mere show. Okay, time the heck out! There's no WAY the two of you improvised all that based on the vague little conversation you had! Friends need little more than a vague conversation to know the truth. AAAAARGH! I can't believe I was set up by a couple of starry-eyed fools prattling about "friendship" and "love" and...and... Oooo, it makes me wanna PUKE! This is not gonna happen! I'M the one who laughs at the end! Me! Dorothy! MEEEEEE! I AM NOT GONNA BE TRICKED BY A COUPLE OF DO-GOODER CHUMPS! HAAAAAH! Dammit! *cough* A smoke bomb!
