The Enigmatic Researcher

Good evening, Your Highness. Might I borrow a moment of your time? Hmm... You seem familiar. We last met at that party, correct? Your business here must be important indeed if it led you to find this place. Alberian Prince and Researcher

I hear you are a master of controlling mana and researching wyrmscale alike. If true, I would request your aid. Well, this just got interesting. Go on. I will get to the heart of the matter: I seek the mana-controlling device you created—I seek the World Ark. And why should I give that to you? Naturally, I'll not ask you to hand it over for nothing. In return for the Ark, I will give you one of the seeds of the abyss. You would proffer up one of Levin's forbidden dragonseeds? Fascinating. I had heard they had all been destroyed. This is the last of the original three. But if it will let me obtain what I seek, it is a price worth paying! I desire true power above all else, and your World Ark will elevate my research to the next level. I will use it to achieve my lifelong dream, while you move one step closer to the truth you seek. South Grastaea whose residents had vanished
without a trace.
Soon, word came down of another village that
had suffered the same fate. ...And another.
...And another still
It seems the rumors of mass disappearances in northern Saint Lotier are true, master. Same thing over in eastern Rovetelle. A whole village is just...empty. That makes seven villages now. We can't afford to sit back and wait for this to keep happening. We need to act. What should we do? Well, I think going to the place where the last disappearance happened would be a good start. Bad news, master. REALLY bad. There's been another disappearance. Over a hundred people winked out during the night from a village southwest of here. Looks like our destination's set. Right. It's true—every last soul has disappeared! Also, all of the buildings look to have been heavily damaged. But I don't see a drop of blood anywhere. Did all these folks really get spirited away in the night without saying boo about it? Yeah, but if that's the case, why are the buildings all smashed up? I am investigating the possibility this may have been the work of a legendary fiend that absorbs people. Not one step further! I assure you, I mean no harm. My name is Astorius, and I am a researcher investigating the strange happenings in South Grastaea. I am, however, curious as to who YOU are. Apologies if we seemed a bit...overeager there. We're all a little on-edge right now. I am Prince Euden, and these are my companions from the Halidom. Ah! The seventh scion of Alberia, yes? It's an honor to meet you, dragonblood prince. The pleasure is mine. Also, if you've learned anything about what's happening here in the course of your investigations, would you please share it with us? Our investigation is still early, so we'll take any help we can get. Permit me to show you something... This is the only clue I was able to find. Eww, it's so slimy! What IS this thing?! It's a creature—or at least part of one. Blimey, it's still twitching! This strange lump is the only animate object I was able to find at the scene. Unfortunately, I don't have the first clue how to go about studying it. But I've heard tell of the many scientific experts in the Halidom's employ, so perhaps I can entrust it to you. It's certainly worth a shot. However, I don't think we should just take this and part ways. Why not pool our efforts into researching this issue? Come to the Halidom with us. While I certainly appreciate the offer, are you certain you wish to make it? Of course. The more minds we can put to this matter, the better. In that case, I'm happy to join you! That's great. Follow us and we'll take you back there. (I can't believe he accepted me so readily...) (I can see how he became friends with HIM, however—they're both as naive as the day is long.) (Regardless, phase one of my preparation is complete. Now I just need to wait for my friend to return, absorb the prince, and display my handiwork!) The Thunderswift Lord's Friend

happening in Grastaea, the prince and his friends
were given a mysterious object by Astorius and
set about investigating it.
Hey, Sophie. I hear you've been looking at that slimy thing Astorius gave us? I have—and for lack of a better word, the mana in it is very...unusual. It resembled the mana of a dragon, but is too distorted to actually BE that. I'm sorry, but I'm going to need more time before I can tell you anything with any kind of certainty. Who's there? It's me. Albert. How have you been, Prince Euden? Leader of the Knights of Levin

Albert! I haven't seen you since you left to try and find your friend! How did all of that pan out? I searched high and low, but in the end could find no trace of him. But then I heard about the all-too-familiar disappearances that have been happening here and hurried back with all speed. Familiar how? What's happening here is similar to what occurred in my homeland during our crisis with the seeds of the abyss. Which means it's possible that Yurius is somehow involved. Wait, isn't Yurius...? The friend I'm searching for? Yes. Though to be honest, I have doubts as to whether or not he still names me friend. After all, he fled with one of the seeds that almost drove our kingdom to ruin. And yet, I cannot bring myself to... I don't want to reopen old wounds, but would you be willing to tell me what happened between you two? I would—but as you said, it is a tale most melancholy. Still, if it might give us clues for bringing this crisis to an end, I think it's something we all need to hear. Then let me tell you of all that occurred before we parted ways for good and all. Yurius, stop! That way leads to the sealed storehouse; what business have you there? My business has nothing to do with you, "hero"! Of course it does! We are best friends, and always have been so! "We feel the next king should be the Thunderswift Lord, Albert—not Yurius." You've heard such talk, yes? It's all any of the ministers can speak of lately. Those are just rumors! I would never— SILENCE! All this time, I thought we were the same! But now I see you plan to abandon me just like all the others! Unlike you, my father never bequeathed me anything—so if I want power, I can do naught but seize it for myself! Once I have power, everyone will HAVE to acknowledge me! I refuse to toil in worthless obscurity for the rest of my days! Damn it, Yurius! Before long, the fateful day arrived

I finally have it! The seed of the abyss is mine! Aaaah ha ha ha! No, Yurius! The seeds are too dangerous! You must stay away from them! You know as well as I how many of our fellows fell to their vile sway. You're smarter and more capable than anyone—AND you're royalty! You have no need for such things! Ha! A hero who has everything and is respected by everyone could NEVER understand my feelings! Aargh! Still, old friend, let me give you the finest seat in the house to the tragedy that is about to unfold! For now I shall—GAAAH! Nnngh... This power is too much for me... I must find some way to control it if I want to have my revenge! ...The rest of the story is known to you. I pursued my friend over hill and dale until the trail led me here to South Grastaea. On the orders of His Majesty, I am to find the man who stole the accursed seed that erases all life and...deal with him. Erases all life?! But that... Yes. It is just what is happening here. Which leads me to think the item you found is, in truth, part of a seed. Perhaps Yurius finally found a way to control the seed and feels emboldened enough to act in the open now. I wanted to separate the seed from him before they fully merged into one. I wanted to...save him. But I fear I may be too late. Now, the only way to destroy that seed might be to take the life of my oldest friend. Please don't give up hope just yet. You're friends—maybe your words will be able to affect the seed through him! I fear we're past the point where mere words can reach him—even mine. And as I said, I doubt he sees me as a friend anymore. The opposite, if anything. I can hear how important he is just by how you talk about him, and I'm sure he still feels the same for you. If I can understand that, he will, too. This is all going to work out. I cannot say I share your confidence, but I appreciate it nonetheless. Yes, well, this is no time for sulking. Will you let me aid your investigation? We'd be glad to have you.

Episode 3

The Truth About Astorius

The prince and friends continue their investigation
into the mysterious disappearances, but all of
their efforts prove fruitless...
I've received a report from Albert, master. He says he hasn't found even a hint of Yurius's current whereabouts. Well, he can join the club, I guess; we've struck out on this end as well. How fares the investigation? Oh, hello, Astorius. We're not getting anywhere at the moment, but we did at least acquire SOMETHING useful. We were given documents on a case remarkably similar to ours—one caused by the seeds of the abyss over in the Kingdom of Levin. Levin? ...Who gave you them, if I might ask? A friend of mine named Albert. Er, is something wrong? You look pale all of a sudden. N-no, I'm fine. By Albert, might you mean the famous Thunderswift Lord? The very same. Do you know him? By name only—he is one of the most famed heroes in all of Levin. Such men are far beyond my personal circle, I fear. Regardless, I have some urgent business to take care of, so I must bid you farewell. Something about this doesn't feel right. ...Are you there, Jurota? Of course, master. I have an urgent mission for you... This way, master! Snow and Ashe sensed something strange over here! I wasn't expecting to find something so soon after sending Jurota. Which means... That we're gonna catch the bad guy red-handed! Oh, it's gonna be—WHOA! Aw, hell. Why do a pack of fiends have to decide to show up NOW?! Wait, hang on. Do those fiends look...weird to any of you? "Weird" is such an ungainly word. These fiends were spawned by the seed, you see, and as inheritors of its power, will multiply as much as I desire. I know that voice! And they are all powered by the people of this country and the mana I consumed from them! Ah ha! Aaaah ha ha ha! You're not Astorius at all... You're Yurius! And it only took you this long to figure it out! Heavens above, but you are a SUCH a naive fool. Still, you did prove rather open-minded— as one might expect from a man capable of forming multiple dragonpacts. Just what are you after, Yurius? Why are you wreaking havoc in my land? I seek only to unravel the secrets of shapeshifting and make its power my own. Good luck with that, pal! Everyone knows only Alberian royalty can shapeshift. Ah, but my mother came from a branch of the Alberian royal family, which means I have a trace amount of dragonblood flowing in my veins. What?! Yet despite that, I've never been able to shapeshift—a fact that GREATLY displeased my dear father. He always cursed me as a failure—just as he did my mother, for dying while giving birth to me. I was worthless compared to true Alberian royalty like you—but that will be the case no longer! Thanks to the device of Prince Phares, I have the ability to shapeshift at last! Now, I am greater than anyone—including Albert and the true dragon bloodline! These fiends I spawned stand as proof of my greatness! You're mad... Aaah ha ha ha! Now, bear witness to the forbidden dragon of Levin! This is MY shapeshifted form—granted by forming a pact with a seed of the abyss! I don't know what that thing is, but it sure as hell ain't a dragon! Yeah, and aren't seeds of the abyss supposed to be fiends or something? No, that's a dragon. A monstrous one, yes—but a dragon all the same. Surely your people know dragons come in all shapes and sizes, eh, Prince? Before you stands a monster that does naught but devour mana and leave death in its wake. Albert's father was unable to control it, and was consumed as a result. But I will not share his fate! I CAN control it, and will use its power to kill all of you, then Albert, then my father! Aaaah ha ha! I understand what drove you to this... But it's no excuse for the horrors that you're planning to unleash! Oh, and you're so certain you're right?! Bah! Your smug sense of self-satisfaction and justice makes me SICK! If you think you can judge me, then try... I will only learn the secrets of your power and make it my own! But merely absorbing you is no fun— instead, I will make you one with me and show that fool your corpse! I can't WAIT to see how distraught you will look, my dear "hero"!

Conflicting Friends

Aaargh! Aaaah ha ha! Yes! With the power of the seed at my fingertips, I am invincible! I'll save you, master! Searing Chakra—AAARGH! Bah! Fatal Blo— Urk! I'm going to have to shapeshift... Midgardsormr, lend me your power! This ends here, Yurius! Haaaaah! How long have I waited for this moment! Wha—?! I'm...being pulled in! By absorbing you in dragon form, I will obtain even greater power. Now...become my strength! Aaaargh! I...can't break free... At this rate... Enough! Leave those people be, Yurius, and face ME if you dare! No! You weren't supposed to get here before I finished off the prince! Ah, but my master saw through your little scheme and prepared for this. He had me lead Albert here personally. I stand by my assessment of your naiveté, but underestimated your intelligence. Still, your efforts are for naught! Now all of you may watch as the hero's beloved friend perishes! Aaah ha ha ha! Roar, Skyblade! Pathetic! What has gotten into you, Yurius?! Why do you thirst for power so?! It's hardly surprising that one who has always been strong would fail to understand the futility of being weak. Not that I WANT you to understand my feelings—I've had enough of hypocrites pretending to be my friend! The fortunate often feel compelled to show pity to those less so—and I was a fool to ever interpret that as friendship! But I'll not make the same mistake again. And since you seem so determined to protect your new, REAL friends... World Ark! Release the true power of the seed of the abyss! What is this?! This is the true power that was hidden in the seed of the abyss—and it is also the end for all of you! Aaaaagh! Argh! No... AAAGH! Oh, but this is wonderful! You all made me out to be a fool, but look who is writhing on the ground now! Ah, but I am a merciful man who wouldn't want any of you to be alone as you lament for an eternity inside me...so I will absorb the lot of you together! Farewell, hero. Aaaargh! ...Huh? I'm all right. But...what happened?  ! Aaaaaargh! Yurius! What's happening?! He's lost control of his power... That seed is going to consume him! But he was controlling it perfectly until a few moments ago! I have a feeling the device Phares gave him was incomplete. There's likely a limit to how much power it can handle. If we don't do something, his will is going to be completely consumed, and we'll have another tragedy like Levin on our hands. No! Damn it! Do as I command, you useless dragon! I refuse to let my life end like this! I was to be a king! A true king! I cannot stand by and allow the tragedy of Levin to be repeated. It seems my dream to save you and destroy the seed was the dream of a fool, old friend. Killing you now is the only way to avert an even greater tragedy. No! Don't give up!  ! You still want to save your friend, and I believe that you can! So if you really want to save him, reach out now with your voice! Speak to him as his friend! ...You're right. I have to at least try. No matter how insurmountable the odds, I will not let it be said I did not try everything possible to save him! I will destroy the seed—and only the seed! Hold on, Yurius! Just a bit longer! Aaah ha ha! Madness! Utter madness! My body and the seed are one and the same—you cannot destroy one without annihilating the other! How loathsome you are, hero! Even when faced with a monster, you must flaunt your compassion! You came here to kill me, so do it already, if you can! No! I am going to save you! I am long past being able to believe your words—I trust only my own strength now! So if you insist on continuing this sanctimony, then behold! N-no... What have you done?! The seed you seek is now one with my my own heart. Go ahead and plunge your sword into it—but don't expect me to let go of you! You can die an idealist, or push my hand aside and live! Choose one! Aaaah ha ha!  ! This ends now! Die, you self-righteous fool! Was that an explosion?! If Albert didn't get away in time... No! Albert!

Episode 5

True Friends

My body feels like it's going to split in half.
My eyelids are boulders. All is darkness. Pain.
Still, I suppose dying alone after being consumed
by the power of the seed is a fitting end for me.
I never had any bonds I could believe in.
My father hated me, and I've never even
seen what my mother looked like because
no portraits remain of her.
You can't deny the truth of my words, Albert.
Not when you have also chosen to betray me.
(He chose to flee. In the end, I really am alone...) (No matter how much power I gained, I was always destined for a pitiful end.) Yurius! Open your eyes! Al...bert...? Yurius! Thank goodness you're— Urrgh! Hold on, Albert! We'll heal you! No. I'm all right. But even if I wasn't, it would be a price well worth paying in order to save my friend. Did you seriously keep holding on to my hand? You could have died! How is it possible to be so foolish? If that makes me a fool, then I am content with it. Even if you can no longer believe in me, I won't give up on trying to save you. I won't leave you—not ever. How can you still have your head so far in the clouds?! I toyed with you! Betrayed you! And you STILL call me a friend?! Oh, it must be wonderful to be strong enough to feel that way! What is the source of your power?! What drives you?! Bonds, Yurius. What? That couldn't possibly... There is nothing I despise more than the idea of bonds! Nothing! I lost my mother! I was loathed from birth by my father! I have no friends—I HAVE no bonds! But you do. You are, and will always be, the finest friend I have ever known.  ! Speaking to you is threatening to split my very mind. It makes me want to believe in things that cannot be real. I have come too far to be permitted to turn back, and yet the friendship you talk of is... Aaaargh! Okay, what now!? I thought we stopped all this noise! Look! The seed is rising out of his body! Albert's words reached him, and because of that... This is our chance, Albert! Destroy the control device AND the seed! Return my friend to me, you abominable seed! ROAR, THUNDER! LIGHTNING BURST! Graaaagh! And with that, the mysterious disappearances
occurring across the land came to an end.
The seed of the abyss was destroyed,
the people imprisoned within freed,
and with the Halidom's support, they
began to return to their former lives.
One day, at the Halidom...
I'm shocked by how quickly you recovered from all of this. It's hard to believe you were unconscious for so long after the seed was destroyed. I can't deny that was in part due to the unrequested devotion of a certain someone. Ha! I was just so happy to have my friend back that I couldn't help myself. Honestly... It's good to see everyone getting along. Er, but about the tentacles on his body... A lingering effect of the fusion, I'm afraid. They can be suppressed, but as for fully removing them... Well, he was simply fused for too long. Frankly, it's a miracle he's even alive. I likely owe my survival to the fact the dragonblood within me was weak. If it was as strong as that of the Alberian royal family, I would have completely fused with the seed. Heh. I have always cursed my weakness, but in the end, it actually saved my life. What a terribly infuriating thought. Oh, Yurius... Fear not—I have no intention of saying I would rather die than live in shame. Even if they are not being made public, I have committed countless crimes. Hundreds were consumed by the seed because of me—and though they all miraculously survived, that does not make what I did any less vile. I have a duty to spend the rest of my days atoning for these crimes as I can. Well, I'm glad you've accepted that, but what changed in you? I decided that I want to try...believing. Oh? All this time, I have been convinced that I was powerless and insignificant, and so sought power in an effort to change that and become someone. However, this meddling fool risked his life to tell me that I already AM someone— his best friend, in point of fact. Part of me still thinks this to be utter pablum, but all the same, I've decided I want to try once more to believe in the "bonds" he so fervently talks about. Who knows, maybe they will prove another way to make me stronger! Honestly, Yurius. Besides, I haven't the strength to resist any longer even if I wanted to. All that is left is for you to mete out my punishment. What will you have me do to atone, Prince Euden? I think your knowledge—along with what remains of the seed's power inside you— can be of great use to us. I want you to help us. That will be your punishment. And you truly find that sufficient? I get that you're trying to say I'm being naive and foolish again—but honestly, I'm just glad you're alive. So as long as you work to atone for what you believe you've done, I'm fine with it. Simply calling you "naive" is an understatement. Your personality must put your retainers through a terrific amount of anguish. Much as our friend's nature causes the Knights of Levin untold trouble. I resent that accusation! Regardless, if that is the punishment my captors have chosen, I will abide by it. But if I am to be helping you, Prince, there is one thing you should know. What's that? The last of the seeds is currently in Prince Phares's possession.  ! I planned to recover it from him after consuming all of you, but as you see, I failed rather spectacularly at that. Still, it goes without mentioning that it is far too dangerous a thing to leave in his possession, so I wish to recover it. So while helping you, I also intend to clean up my past mistakes. Are you amenable to that? Of course, Yurius. Welcome to the team. I look forward to serving you. As one of the Knights of Levin, I pledge you my undying support, Prince Euden.
