- In Iranian mythology, Simurgh is a legendary female peacock said to grant fertility and purification of the land and sea. She is most famously known for her role in the epic Shahnameh, or Book of Kings, where she raises the albino human Prince Zal as her own child after he is abandoned in the mountains. Zal later grows up and finds a human wife, and during the troubled birth of their child, he calls on Simurgh's help to deliver the child.
