A Place For Everyone

Wh-what are you saying, Luca?! You heard me, but lemme say it plain— you need to clear outta the castle. I'M the leader of the Halidom now! This doesn't make sense... (What happened to Luca?!) A short time ago...
Hey! Are you insulting the rokka, you woodland wimp?! What large words to spill from the mouth of such a small and insignificant being. Rrrrrrrgh! Okay, let's all just slow our collective rolls for a hot second, yeah? Luca, this guy is— Okay, that is not a slow roll—in fact, it's the exact OPPOSITE of a slow roll. Now just take a couple of breaths and tell ol' Luca what happened.

We got us a right huge family runnin' around the castle these days. Dude, for reals! Makes me sorta miss the days when it was just a few of us. Unfortunately, more people has meant a few more problems for us to deal with. I hear ya, boss. Some'a these races are havin' a real hard time makin' nice. We've got humans, sylvans, and rokkans all smushed together into a big ol' stew. Yeah, but it ain't altogether unexpected. I mean, even folks from the same race think differently depending on their backgrounds and whatnot. So when ya throw a few different races in the mix, it just makes it that much trickier what to suss it all out. I'm thankful we've had Luca around. His peacemaking abilities have really kept this pot from boiling over. Who'd have seen that coming? I know, right? Luca of all people! Uh oh. Sounds like somebody's talkin' about me outta school. Actually, we were just talking about how much of a help you've been lately. Yeah, I probably woulda strangled somebody by now if not for you. Yeah, so don't be a paranoid weirdo! It's all good stuff. Whoa, okay! Let's all just back the compliments down a peg, yeah? All the attention makes me sweaty. So what's yer secret, Luca? Why the big change? Huh? Ya ain't never been much of a peacemaker. Yer more the type what to throw a few stink bombs and chuckle all the way to the bank. It's because I made a promise to build a world where people didn't have to fight. Ah, yes. Your promise to Mascula. Yeah. But to be honest, I ain't even sure HOW to start makin' a place like that. So I decided to start by challenging the conventions in front of me. What do you mean? It's stupid to think people have to be a certain way just because they happen to be sylvan or human or whatever, yeah? So I thought maybe if I could convince folks to drop their prejudices, we'd be one step closer to that world. So THAT'S why ya keep buttin' in whenever two races are goin' at it! That's a surprisingly deep thought, Luca. You sure you're feeling okay? Ha ha, very funny. But I'm serious here. And it doesn't stop with race—it extends all the way to entire nations. "This happened because Alberia." "This happened because Dyrenell." We've gotta stop thinkin' like that. I know it sounds like a pipe dream, but I'm committed to seein' it happen.

This salve is a special sylvan medicine that should take care of both your wounds—which look VERY nasty, by the way. Blech. Why would you help an enemy? Because we're not enemies. I mean, obviously I'm gonna fight for the things that are important to me— that's non-negotiable. But fightin' someone just 'cause they're from a different country or a different race ain't somethin' I can get behind. Folks are generally good-natured no matter what side of a border they're from. Hell, I bet the three of us could be pals! ...... Well then. If you're feeling so generous, I suppose you won't mind telling us how to make this medicine of yours? What? That way, you can help the whole of the Imperial Army, and not just the two of us. Hold on a sec, that's— Not possible? Unwise? Of course it is. You'd be going out of your way to help enemies who'd die on their own if you simply leave them be. Your whole "people aren't bad" thing is pure selfishness. YOU choose who you will save and who you will not. What? No! That's not it at all! Look, this medicine is VERY complicated to make, and it's easy to mistake one herb for another, so I don't— So you can't teach us stupid humans how to make it? What a sylvan thing to think! Clearly you don't trust us at all. No! How can you say I don't trust— All your words and thoughts come from a sylvan point of view. When you said we could "be pals," you might as well have said we could be the beloved pet to you, the master! That's how you think you'll take away the barriers of race and country? What a joke! But I... Watch out! Huh?! The hell are you DOING, Luca?! The enemy's right in front of you! So this was a ploy...to lower our guard...? Damn you... No! It wasn't! Step aside, Luca! Your barriers...will remain forever... Because you can't abandon... the sylvan...part of you... No... No! Huh? Luca? Saaay, nice duds! What's with the getup? I got a rokkan blacksmith and a human craftsman to make 'em for me. Was there a reason for using two such disparate craftspeople? It's so I don't forget that folks from ALL races are lendin' me their strength. And the blade? When I fight, I want to be close enough to see the faces and hear the voices of my foes. So I asked Laxi to borrow Mascula's blade. I thought it looked familiar. I need it—I need ALL of this—so I don't forget what I'm strivin' for in the end.

Episode 2

The Guardian Tree

Tiiiimberrrrr! Ten down, a whole lot to go. And it'll be over in no time if you all work together! So come on, everyone! Let's keep at it! Well, someone's sure struttin' around in fine fettle today. How could I not be with what we're creating here? It's a village for sylvans, humans, rokkans, and anyone else who wants to live there! It's the village I've always wanted, and I'm makin' it with my own hands! Yeah. Yeah, I guess ya are... What's wrong, Ranzal? You look gloomy. Look. I like the idea of yer village. I really do. It's...nice. But I don't get how a place chock full'a different folks is gonna be all rainbows and sparkles. So you don't want us to build it?! 'Course I want ya to build it, ya dope! Hell, we got so many refugees from the Empire, we need every hut we can spare. So yer definitely smart to start whippin' up new places what for folks to live. And I want this idea of yers to work. I just ain't sure how easy it's gonna be to get all them different races and cultures to...ya know. Get along. Oh, I know it ain't gonna be easy. I fear we share your concerns, friend. Most of us have little experiences with other races at all, much less as neighbors. Agreed. But so long as Luca is here, I think it has a chance to work. Well, hell. Now I just sound like a bitter old man yellin' at progress. Ha ha! Their support just means I have to try that much harder, I guess. It's time to take the first step on the path to a world where no one needs to fight. And this village is gonna be that step.

All right, onto the next one! Careful, now! We've cleared plenty of land. I might be able to get a head start on tilling the fields. I hope so; we need to build up our stores before winter arrives. All right, everyone, let's do this. Luca! Lucaaaaaa! Bad news! Sarisse? What's wrong? Well, I was out on patrol just now... When I found an álfr tree in the woods! An álfr tree?! But that means... Exactly! This is an álfr FOREST!

Oh...crud. Uh, Luca? You mind filling us in? Álfr trees are super unique plants that grow deep inside certain forests. And they are VERY special to sylvans. How so? We call 'em guardian trees of the forest. They're precious things that bless all sylvan woods. Any forest that contains an álfr tree is known as álfr forest, which means the whole area gets special treatment. Don't forget the part about how our ancestors were born FROM an álfr tree! Wait, sylvans come from TREES?! It is but a pretty bit of mythology. However, there are many sylvans who accept such stories as fact. Exactly. And those same folks believe that when sylvans die, they become one of the trees inside an álfr forest. So to sum up, this tree is an especially powerful symbol for your people. It sounds much like a human religion. All sylvan kids know to stay away from álfr forests unless there's a good reason. And yet, such forests are extremely rare. Most sylvans can go a lifetime without ever setting foot in one. So of course we find one HERE. I am confused, Luca. I was taught that finding an álfr tree was good fortune. But now that we know this is an álfr forest, we can't cut down any more trees. Aw, hell. The village! I guess...we could try to find a new place to build it? Maybe? Are ya serious? Ya spent forever lookin' for this spot! Even had us check the soil quality and do a buncha topogoog... torpholog... We did all them tests! We ain't gonna find another place before winter sets in, that's for damn sure. And that means folks are gonna starve. Ya really think some old tree is worth all that pain? I know, but...

...Didja hear that? Hell yes, I heard it. Can't believe all our hard work is gonna be for nothing because of some stupid tree! It's the sylvans' magic tree—not ours. Maybe we just continue on without 'em. But we need Luca—he's the glue holding all of us together. Just because Luca's a sylvan doesn't mean he'll abandon us. ...Right? Or we just eliminate the problem altogether. By the root, as it were. What are you saying? If somebody was to go into the woods and cut that tree down... Whoa, slow down!

Sowing Harmony

I guess this is the álfr tree. I see why the sylvans say it's so special... But no tree is worth our lives. I still feel bad for the sylvans, though... Right then. Soonest begun, soonest done. Wait! Waaait! What?! Luca? What are you doing here?! Well, I've been spendin' time tryin' to see this from your perspective. And after I thought about it, I figured you might come out here like this. ...! Does that mean you understand how important the new village is to us? And how this tree threatens it all? Yeah, I get it. But that still don't mean you can just chop it down. Then you're just prioritizing sylvans over the rest of us! Listen, the village I'm trying to create ain't like other villages. You know that. It's a place where everyone will belong, and no one will be rejected. Which means there's no point if we're already dividing into camps of sylvans versus everybody else. So what, then? Would you have us starve and die to prove your own ideals? No! All I'm askin' for is a little time to come up with a solution that works for all of us. And when can we expect this flash of inspiration? Tomorrow? The day after? Perhaps after winter has already arrived?! If you dither and dicker, we're like to find the ground frozen solid before we can plant a single seed! If there was an easy solution to dealing with this huge tree, you'd have already found it. Look, I just need you to trust me. Will you please do that? ...... Fine. We'll go back. I knew you'd understand! What I UNDERSTAND is that even if we work together, we're no match for you. Huh? What are you talking about? You make it sound like I'm going to physically force you to do things. Perhaps not for day-to-day tasks, but I've no doubt you'd use force to protect your precious tree. But... It is what it is. At the end of the day, you're sylvan, and we are not. A shame, but truth. Hey, c'mon... I should have known it was impossible to make a village like this a reality. Guys, wait! It's not like that. I'm not... Luca? Eavesdroppin' on me again, eh, Sis? Sorta, yeah. Seems like non-sylvan folks just don't get what that tree means to us. Yeah, but I understand. I mean, I'd be hard-pressed to give up my home for a magical rokkan dirt clod or whatever. I hear you. ...Heh. It's funny. The old you would have just ran in here and cut the tree down, to hell with the consequences. And the new me would still do it if I thought that would solve the problem. But if we cut the álfr tree down, the sylvans will abandon the village. I gotta find a solution what makes EVERYONE happy here. Aw! My brother's all grown up. Where's all this coming from? I mean, it ain't like I was gonna be young and reckless my whole life. There are too many people counting on me. It's just not like you, is all. ...But it IS amazing. Okay, come on! Seriously! You wouldn't normally give two figs about what everyone else thinks. You just make some weird suggestion and then go about your merry way. Like, "Let's just pick up the forest and drop it somewhere else!" or whatever. Actually, I did think about that. What? Not the whole forest, but I've been wonderin' if there's a way to maybe transplant the álfr tree somewhere. But we'd need a ton of time and people to move such a massive tree, so it's probably a non-starter. I bet you could manage something if Euden helped out! No way. It would take every single person at the Halidom to even... Wait. EVERYONE at the Halidom means...

ROOOOOOAAAR! Over here, you guys! This way! Rrrrgh! Grandma's good pajamas! What's with the tree?! I asked all the dragons to help me carry it over here! Now the tree survives AND the village can continue. It's a perfect solution! You're really somethin' else, Luca. To think, you'd bring DRAGONS to help. I told you I was gonna find a plan that worked for absolutely everyone! Er, but dragons are like deities to us. Making them carry your stuff like common pack mules seems so... Dragons may be like gods to humans, but they're carrying the álfr tree— which is like a sylvan god. And THAT'S what I call harmony between races!

Sweeping Sickness

I've never fought on such a wide-open field before, much less been face-to-face with my enemy. I hear you, but we have to make our move right now, or else— Luca! Bad news! Our right flank got overwhelmed! The imperials are closing in! Okay, you there! With me! We have to stop them! (Dammit! I really wish Ranzal or Elisanne were with me right now...) (Why did things end up like this?)

We need to find a cure and put a stop to this disease before things get even worse. Not sure there's much of a "worse" when the Empire's attackin' us. Unless the rumors I've heard are true and sylvans are spreading the illness. WHAAAT?! As you know, we sylvans are the only ones unaffected. As such, some feel this is a nefarious plot for our kind to take over the Halidom. Oh, that's just stupid! Your name is especially prominent among the local whispers, Luca. They say you seek to claim the Halidom for your very own and remove Euden from power. Luca would NEVER do something like that! ...He's not smart enough to think of it, first of all. Any who know Luca recognize such idle gossip for exactly what it is. But to folks that DON'T know me, I'm just some arrogant sylvan. Aw, don't worry about it, Luca. This'll die out quick and be replaced by some other nutty rumor. Trust me. Still, taking over the Halidom and replacing Euden... You know? That ain't a bad idea. WHAAAT?!

Hrrrgh... To think I would find men of the Empire in such a shameful, wretched state! We recently received word that sylvans in the Halidom have staged a coup. And yet you cravens would sit here and let this golden chance slip through your fingers? Disgusting, all of you! B-but we're deathly ill... There's nothing to be done... Silence! As of this moment, I am taking command of this unit. You will return to the capital and face punishment for allowing our troops to be annihilated. All men who are of courage, follow me! Leave the rest for the wolves and ravens! We will storm that loathsome, treacherous prince's castle and take it for our own!

Which was true, because we all healed up quick once we left. Still, I am unclear as to why your plan required the pretense of false mutiny. I always wanted the barriers between races to go away. But I feel like I won't make any progress so long as I keep calling myself a sylvan. So I'm going to stop thinking of myself like one! You're going to WHAT?! At the end of the day, I'm the same as everyone else that lives in this world. And that means my race is the entire planet! I'm a planetian! Are you serious right now?
