Episode 1

I'm Here to Play!

Luca and Euden are on

their way back from a mission.

Along the way, they decide

to stop off at a forest on the

western side of the continent.

How did you even find this spot, Luca? We've gathered enough mushrooms to feed three Ranzals! Laranoa told me about it a while back. She's your friend we met at the Vernal Banquet, right? Yeah, me and her go waaaaaay back. And now she's gonna be the next chief of her village! Life's wild, man. Actually, her village should be pretty close to here... Huh? Raaaagh! A fiend! ...Wait. Something about it seems odd... Yeah, it hasn't even noticed us... Was it bein' chased? Woof! Woof woof woof! A dog? Raaaah! Grraaaagh! WOOF WOOF! Those dodges... He's freakin' FAST. Who IS this dog? Don't let it get away, Rolf! I'll finish it with my arrows—hah! Graaah! Gruuuuh... Amazing... Every arrow struck a vital area. But who fired them? You nailed it Rolf! Who's a good boy?! Well speak'a the sylvan—it's Laranoa! Luca! And Euden too! Good to see you again! Aaaaand BODY SLAM TIME! OOOF! Nya ha ha. Now THAT'S a greeting. Jeez, nobody hits likee you... Anyway, what brings ya out here? Just doin' my duty as the next chief, keepin' the forest clear of fiends and all that. Ain't that right, Rolf? Woof! Rolf, huh? He's with you? Wait, you two have never met?! Ohmigosh—Rolf, meet Luca. Luca, Rolf! We're hunting partners. Woof, woof! Ha ha! Nice to meet you, Rolf. What're YOU guys doing here, though? Oh, we just stopped to grab some mushrooms on our way back to the Halidom. Ooo, that's your castle, right? I'd LOVE to visit sometime. I bet you've got all sorts of great grub... Well hey, why don't you just come back with us now? Sarisse is there too. Sounds like a party. Let's go! Laranoa, did you manage to... Oh? Who are these people? Fresh faces all. But never mind them—did you vanquish those fiends? We should report back to the chief, if so. I DID vanquish the fiends, so we're cool there, buuuut... I was thinking maybe you guys could handle the reporting bit yourselves. And what of you? I've uh...got a missions to take care of. I'm going to the castle where these two live, to speak with the folks there. We need more warriors, right? So I'm hopin' to find some real toughies to recruit. You're top'a the list, Luca! Give it up, I ain't goin' anywhere. Just wait till you hear my spiel! Anyway, I'll see you guys later. ...Do we REALLY need more warriors? The village is quite peaceful these days. Indeed. We've heard no reports of soldiers in the forest for quite some time now. Are you certain this scouting is necessary? Hey, a little preparation never hurt anyone, right? Besides, we'll all get a few more winks knowing we're well staffed if the Empire ever comes knocking. That's the real reason, I promise! I'm not just going there to hang out—and DEFINITELY not to eat a ton and stay up late! None'a that! *sgh* Very well. If you'll excuse us then... Real convincing. Ha ha! Hey, I really DO want to recruit you. And Sarisse! So if you ever change your mind and decide to join us, you're more than welcome. I'll keep that in mind, I guess. We'll show you back to the castle. Yo, Sarisse! I'm here to play! Ah ha ha ha! Stop tickling me! Would you like some more mushrooms, Laranoa? Yes, please! Your cooking is incredible. This girl's belly almost puts ME to shame! Bwa ha ha! We'll have to have a contest one'a these days! W-would you mind if I stroked Rolf, Laranoa? He's so...fluffy. Sure thing! Between you and me, his best fur's on his belly. Hey Rolf—roll over! Woof! Goodness. Such...profound softness. Laranoa's really become a fan favorite! Yup. She's always been the type that gets along with anyone. I imagine that's part of why she was selected to be the next chief of her village. So, I hear yer tryin' to recruit Luca and Sarisse. Yep. Don't you think any leader would be better off with close friends around? Plus, I always wanted a little sister like Sarisse. Heh heh! And Luca's always struck me as the little brother type. The kind that sticks with his big sister through all the ups and downs of life, you know? How the heck am I supposed to be YOUR little brother? I'm way more grown up than you! Oh really? What about that time we were about to jump off a waterfall, and your trunks were wet before we even— HEY HEY HEY, okay! Point taken! Ha ha, looks like Laranoa's holding all the cards. Everyone enjoyed themselves, but before long

the time came for Laranoa to return home.

I don't wanna go back yet. It feels like I just got here... Just come back some other time. Gate's always open, right Euden? That's right. We'll all be looking forward to your next visit. ...You mean it? Of course. I have a promise to keep, remember? I'll always be here to talk if you need me. Well all right! Till next time, chums. Several days later...

Luca! Euden! I'm baaaack! Already?! Um, welcome back. Thanks! I've takena real shine to this place. Couldn't WAIT to see you guys. I mean, we're all happy to see you, but... Don't you have tons of stuff to do back at the village? Hah, please! The first rule of having fun is makin' sure all your work is done! And I fed the chief a story about "recruiting a new talent" so I've got an excuse. Rolf's still at the village, so he's gonna come tell me if anything happens while I'm gone. See? I've got it aaaaall covered. So is it cool if I come hang out once in a while? You did all that just so you could goof off? Heh, pretty impressive. It's nice knowing people enjoy being at the Halidom so much. We're happy to have you, Laranoa. All right, that's enough'a that—let's get this party STARTED!

Episode 2

Leadership Struggles

Laranoa lives in a forest village to the west. One day, she will become the next chief. Her duties require her to lead and unify all the people of the village. However... What should we do with the game we caught earlier, Laranoa? Smoke it and store it, please. Oh, but first cut some off for us to eat now! The elders wish to meet with you regarding the upcoming ritual. And afterwards, there are many more who would bend your ear. They'll all get their turn, but I'm busy at the moment. Can you let them know I'll see 'em later? The sentries are saying their arrows haven't been getting replenished lately. Didn't we decide on a rotation for that the other day? Hold on, I'll check... They ask to be prioritized. Additionally, an envoy from a nearby village has arrived. He claims his business is urgent. Wait, hold on—one thing at a time! You must be more organized, Laranoa. But— Save me your excuses. If you persist as you are, you will never become chief. ...Yes, sir.

There's more to being a leader than just ordering people around, huh? *munch* Definitely. You need to be aware of every development, big or small, as well as each person's individual concerns and issues. See, YOU get it. Nobody else seems to though. I know I'm not doing the best job at the moment, but the chief didn't need to be so harsh... Isn't it enough that I'm TRYING?! Rrrgh! *munch* *slurp* Those strawberries look nice. They're great. You want some? Euden! Ya gotta help me! What's the problem, Luca? Why won't you just admit fault and apologize, Luca? You're wasting both of our time. Sylas, hey! Any chance you wanna come work for me? You know well how busy my aromatics research keeps me. I wouldn't have the time. Now—Your Highness, please accost this glutton. Hm? What happened? I'd gathered some strawberries to keep me sated during my research, you see. My eyes were away for mere moments— but when I looked back, they were gone. I'm innocent, I tell ya! Innocent! You're the only soul in this castle capable of such guile. Of that I am QUITE certain. This is far from your first foray into treachery. You purloined my sandwich when— We were KIDS! I wouldn't do that now—tell him, Euden! I think we first need to— Admit your guilt, Luca! Act swiftly, and your castigation will be merciful. I'm tellin' ya, I didn't do it! Ummm... Sylas? Where was it you left those strawberries? The kitchen. They were of the very same ripeness as the ones you are currently... Ah. I see. Ohmigosh, I am SO sorry. I swear I didn't know! I thought Cleo had just left them out for everyone... What'd I tell ya?! If you apologize, I'll let ya off with only minor casti...whatever! Rrgh... I apologize, Luca. Great. You're forgiven. But Laranoa, how'd ya not even think to ask before ya ate those strawberries? I... I don't know. I'm sorry. I mean, come on. How the heck are you gonna be chief if ya act like that? I... I don't have to take that from YOU, Luca. C'mon, I'M the one Sylas almost smacked! That doesn't give you the right to question my ability to be chief! AT ALL! Whoa, hey, I was just thinkin' about your future. Hah, wow... So I'm so hopeless even my FRIENDS don't believe in me now? What are you— I'm TRYING! I'M DOING MY BEST! It was bad enough having the chief scold me, but now you too? I'm outta here. Hey, wait! ...Man, I think I really messed things up. She's been having a hard time lately. It can be overwhelming when everyone relies on you so much. Aw, jeez... I better go find her and apologize. Wait. If you go after her now, it will only make things worse. Someone else should speak with her first. I'll go. Oh? Hm... Yes, I think that's a good idea.

*sigh* There you are. Euden? You came after me? I was worried about you. We all were. Luca really wasn't trying to attack you when he said those things. I'm sure he'd like to tell you as much himself. *sigh* I know. He always speaks without thinking, and I KNOW that, so I really shouldn't have blown up like I did. His words just hit a little close to home, I guess. How so? I'm trying as hard as I can to be someone people can depend on, but lately it almost feels like I'm going backwards. I'm scared that if I don't start improving soon, everyone's gonna give up on me. I just...really don't know if I'm cut out to be chief. Some people are born leaders; some have to work at it. I think if you just envision the leader you want to be, and work toward it little by little, you'll get there. The leader I want to be... Right. Besides, I think the reason you're so uneasy is because you really care for the people you're leading. You really think so? I do. And I think you're more than fit to be your village's next chief. I still have a lot to learn about being a leader myself—so let's work toward our goals together. Heh, all right. I might lack experience, but as long as I know where I want to end up, I can keep moving forward. One step at a time. Together with you. Do you feel a little better? I do. Thanks, Euden. I guess I better go apologize to Luca... I'm glad to see you've calmed down, Laranoa. What the—Sylas? Luca?! You guys followed me too?! I didn't realize what you were goin' through... But even then, I was a turbo jerk. Can you forgive me? I'm the one who should be apologizing; I started this whole mess. I'm sorry, Luca! I'm glad you two made up. Hey, how bout I go gather some more strawberries from the forest? Me and Sylas'll come too—we can make it a competition! Just like old times. Heh. A Perfect Pair

Euden and Luca are showing Laranoa around a human town. Ordinarily, Rolf would have remained to watch over the village, but today he was given special dispensation. Man, human towns are LOADED with cool stuff! Woof! Ha ha, I'm glad you're enjoying yourselves. Who knew fish tasted so good?! And that flea market? WAAAY better than what we have back home! Yeah, this town is pretty great. I really wanna know more about human culture now. Excuse me, young man? Hm? I was hoping you might tell me where— WOOF WOOF! Wh-what the?! What's wrong, Rolf? Easy boy. Sorry, he didn't mean to startle you. You need to keep better control of your mutt! Rolf's not one to bark for no reason. Something must have set him off. Do you maybe have something dangerous on you? Wh-what are you talking about? Grrrr... WOOF! WOOF WOOF! Aaah! Oh, you dropped something. ...Is that a knife? The blade is covered in poison! Bah! He's getting away! I bet he's an assassin after Euden! I doubt we'll catch him now... He's in the thick of the crowd. Don't worry, we'll handle this. Rolf! Woof!

*pant* *pant* Damn it! I would've gotten away with it if not for that meddling dog! Better lie low here for a while. I'll need to think up a new plan to get— WOOF WOOF! Dammit... Did you follow my scent?! Nevermind! You've gotten in my way for the last time—DIE! I've got it from here, Rolf! HAH! Aaaargh! Heh. Once you're in our sights, you're done for. Now let's turn this guy in and get back to Euden. Woof! Thanks for saving me, you two. I've asked Cleo to cook a thank-you meal for you. She's making something special for you too, Rolf. You hear that, boy?! Score! Woof! You two really get each other, don't you? Yup! In my village, it's really common to take a dog with you when you go out hunting. Being able to work in perfect sync is crucial—and it helps a bunch when you're best buds. Me and Rolf have been through the grinder together. Rough training? Yeah. See, all hunters end up with dogs eventually, but it's different when you're chosen to be the next chief. You're with the pup from the moment it's born, and you have to go through training together. That's how me and Rolf's story starts. Woof. We did it all; running gauntlets, fighting fiends—we even sat under freezing waterfalls! *whimper* Wow... It's no wonder your bond is so strong. It wasn't easy at first, though. He was a really naughty puppy. He never listened to me at all. *whimper* I never would have guessed, seeing him now. What changed? Well, we were hunting one night as part of our training. Rolf was NOT happy to be there. We were in pursuit, but I caught my foot on a root and totally messed up my ankle. Ouch... Oh yeah, it was bad. I couldn't even move—I honestly thought it was the end. Nobody else was around. Just me, Rolf, and the night. So, even though I knew he wouldn't listen, I asked him to go get help. And did he? He sure did. For the first time ever, he listened to me. Help was there in no time. Then, once my ankle was healed, we started absolutely NAILING our training. Rolf never ignored me again. And now we're best buds! Ha ha! Hm. That's really interesting. I still don't know WHY that was the moment everything changed, though. Why'd he start listening then? And why'd he keep listening after? I was wondering the same thing. Personalities don't usually change that quickly. Do you think it might be because that was the first time you really relied on him? What do you mean? Think about it: nobody wants to be ordered around, especially if they don't feel valued. But if you show someone your trust and respect, and really depend on them, then they WANT to help. I think that's what happened to Rolf. Is that true, boy? Woof! Woof woof! Now that you mention it, I was really happy the first time everyone depended on me when we were out hunting, too. I'd been on the fence about agreeing to be the next chief, but that feeling made me decide to accept. I was so happy to be able to help everyone... And I wanted to keep feeling that way, you know? Oh, I know. Thanks, Euden. I'm really glad I remembered what made me wanna lead in the first place. I might doubt myself sometimes, but I just gotta push on! It sounds like you're out from under the clouds. Dang right! And don't worry Rolf, I haven't forgotten about you. You're the reason I can get back up whenever I fall. Woof! Woof! Laranoa, Rolf; your dinner is ready. You hear that, Rolf?! Let's get that grub! Woof!

Farewell, Friends

Let's do this, Euden! Hyaaah! Haaaaah! Wow—I never woulda thought to fight an archer like that! Ya pick up a few things when there's so many skilled fighters around. I feel like if I studied combat here, and passed it on to the people in my village, we'd be invincible... Heh, maybe so. ...Hmm? Something's coming. Woof woof! Whoa, something's really got Rolf spooked. Wasn't he keeping watch at your village? Yeah—so I'd better get back. Let's go, Rolf! We're coming too!

At Laranoa's village, in the west forest... The imperial army was here?! Yes. They only passed through the forest, though—there was no indication that they noticed the village was here. That's a relief, at least... Yes, but we cannot drop our guard. There's no telling when they may return. As such, Laranoa—I order you to remain in the village and keep watch on the forest. ...Indefinitely. With your keen senses and sharpened skills, we should be well prepared for anything that may happen. ...Indefinitely? So I wouldn't be able to go visit the Halidom? Quite so. But if you truly care for this village as its next chief, you will be willing to put its wellbeing before your own freedom. That's... You can't just ban her from leaving— that's basically house arrest! ...It's okay, Luca. I'm not happy with this either... But what choice do I have? As the next chief, I humbly accept the task of guarding the village, sir. But before I take my station, would it be possible for me to go say goodbye to everyone who helped me at the Halidom? Hmm... Very well. I shall permit you one night there. Thank you, sir. All right guys, let's go. You too Rolf. Everyone's gonna wanna see you one last time. ...Are you really all right with this, Euden? ...... That night, the castle held a farewell party for Laranoa and Rolf. To avoid any emotional good-byes, Laranoa did her best to keep the party lively. However... Look, I get that things are rough in the west forest... But you can't just keep someone from leaving their village! Like, banishment is one thing, but reverse banishment?! She was just getting comfy here, too... If Laranoa's agreed to the chief's terms, then it's not for us to decide. But if she's not actually satisfied... Hm? Is that her over there?

Will you hear me out, Rolf? Woof. It's not like I don't get what the chief is saying. I agreed to do what he asked, after all. But I can't help but wonder if this is really the right thing to do... Coming to this castle has taught me that the human world is full of things we don't have in the forest. If I want to help the village's present, then the chief is probably right: I should stay there. But if I want to help its future, I feel like I should... ...See more of the human world? Luca... Euden... Eavesdropping is pretty lame, you know. I think you were on to something there. If you study the human world, and bring what you learn back to the village, it'll help sylvan society develop. You've clearly got the village's best interests in mind, so let's go convince that old floppy-eared crone to change his tune! Do you really think we can? I'm not sure what they'll do for a lookout without me... I might have a solution for that. For now, let's just tell the chief what you're thinking. I appreciate what you're doing, but this is my problem, you know? I can't— Just let us help you! What good are friends if ya can't rely on 'em once in a while? I... Please, Laranoa. Won't you let us help you realize the future you see for your village? ...Heh. I think I finally get it. There's nothing wrong with asking for help to achieve your dreams. ...I see. You wish to continue visiting the Halidom. Yes, sir. The human world is full of things we don't have here. And after seeing more of the outside world, I'm convinced the village would benefit from incorporating some of those things. So I want to keep learning about human society, and I think visiting the Halidom is the best way to do that. Understanding human tactics and combat techniques would help if the imperial army ever shows up again, too. It's like the saying goes: ya gotta know your enemy better than ya know yourself. Hmm... Strong points all around. But who would watch over the village? We'll send sentries from the castle, one at a time. One of our best archers will always be available to you. If anything happens, we'll back you up with everything we have. I see... If we have the aid of a prince and his army, perhaps we will be safe after all. Even so, co-existing with another race is no mean feat, Laranoa. You have your duties here to attend to as well—can you truly handle everything at once? Well... When Laranoa's not here, let US take care of her work! Indeed—it's for the good of the village! Are you sure? We all know how hard you work for this place. This is our chance to help you. So please, chief, let her do what she wants! I'm sure she'll be just fine. Please, sir. You guys... Okay, I admit I was going partly so I could goof around—but not anymore! I'm more determined than ever to learn all I can and bring it back here. Hmm... Chief? *sigh* Very well, you may go. I had thought you still a child, but it seems you've grown to inspire the confidence of your people. Laranoa—go to the human castle. Learn all you can of their ways. That is your new mission. Princess of the Forest

Hey, Elisanne—can you tell me what a "prime minister" is? It came up in that history book you let me borrow. Is it like a chief? Of sorts. A prime minister aids a ruler in government affairs. Gotcha... Thanks! And sorry I keep having to ask you about this stuff. Not at all; you have already made great strides in your studies, and I am happy to be of help. It's funny; I've never been one for hittin' the books, but I can't get enough of 'em now! Human stuff is just so fascinating. Like that romance novel you gave me— I haven't finished it yet, but I am HOOKED. Will they? WON'T THEY?! Ha ha, yes, that one is a favorite of mine. Let's have a long discussion when you have seen their tale through.

Thank you for helping with the groceries, Laranoa. Of course! Thanks for bringin' me along. Shopping's a big part of human culture, after all. Oh! What's that shop selling? I've never seen anything like it. It seems a uniquely human tool. Shall we take a closer look? O-oh, it's okay, I know you have things to do... Go on, we're listening. Heh. Well, I realized recently what I like about this place so much. There are all sorts of people here, but they all manage to coexist—happily, even. So, one day, I want my village to have a castle like this too. Hold up—you're not gonna go razin' the forest, are you?! Don't be stupid, Luca—how're we supposed to be a forest village with no forest?! No—I wanna build a tree castle! I'll build it on the mother tree—the huge sucker that towers next to our village. It'll be a place where anyone and everyone can live and be happy, together. Wow, that's a jumbo dream! You plannin' on bein' the princess of that castle, then? Hmm... Now that you mention it...
