Episode 1

Go with Your Gut

Botan is a Hinomotoan fighter who has come to the Halidom to train. One day, she sets out with the prince and his friends in order to deal with some fiends... Get ready for a pummeling, fiends! Yaaah! HAAAAAH! Wow, Botan's incredible! The fiends are flying everywhere! Indeed. Though I fear her fervor begets recklessness... Hiiii-YAH! Huh? It dodged! Where the heck did it go?! Botan, behind you! GRAAAAGH! Gya! Whew! Thanks, Euden. Don't worry about it. Now let's finish this! Right! Looks like we're done here. I'm real sorry, everyone. I tried to help, but I just ended up getting in the way. I can't believe I let the enemy sneak up behind me... Stupid! You fight with a vigorous style, but it is one that allows enemy movements to lead you astray. You're right. I need to be more aware of what they're doing. Then you should work on refining your skills in the areas of observation and insight. This will help you predict where an opponent will strike next. Okay, sure. But HOW do I do that? You want to know how to refine your observation and insight? Well, cleaning would help teach you to keep an eye out for even the smallest bits of dirt and grime. And hunting can teach you insight! You've gotta predict where your target's gonna go next, right? This is all real good advice. You gotta learn to rely on all yer senses on the battlefield, or else yer toast. Speakin' of, I recommend bathin' in an icy stream. The cold'll freshen ya right up! Cleaning, fishing, and icy bathing... Got it. Hey, so will you guys help me? Help you with what? Training! I'm going to do everything you just threw at me! Bwa ha ha! I love yer attitude, kid! But yeah, we'd be glad to help. I'm going to put everything I have into this. I won't let anyone down! Wooooooo! Yeeee-heeeeeey! All right, that is one clean room! How'd I do this time, Cleo? Better. ...But I still see some dust here. You must be mindful of every nook and cranny; a single missed spot is a blight on the entire room. A blight? Sheesh, man. Harsh. But okay, I'll give it another go! And when you can see the fish on the water's surface...you strike! Dangit! It got away AGAIN! You can't just watch and try to react. You have to think about what the FISH is going to do next. Got it. I'm gonna do it this time. Taaake...THIS! Raaargh! Okay, so I don't mind the occasional chilly soak from time to time. One might even call it refreshing. But it is freakin' FREEZING here, Ranzal! I've got icicles comin' outta my nose! Bwaaa ha ha! That means it's PERFECT! Here, watch me. Hoooo BABY! The cold wind only makes it better! Now try it again! Right! Clear my mind... Clear my mind... Raaargh! And so, Botan worked tirelessly at her training. One week later... Graaaagh! Urgh! This fiend's a strong one! Take a rest, you two! I'll handle this. Botan, no! It's still too much for— Hang on. Look how she's moving. I see through EVERYTHING you do! Hiyaaaaaah! Gyaah?! She's reading its movements! Rrrrrrrr... Uh oh. Now the fiend is hiding. I can't see where it went. Sharpen your senses, focus on your surroundings, aaand...there! It's in the brush behind me! RAAAARGH! You can't sneak up on me anymore! Hiiii-YAH! Graaaagh... Nice, Botan! Looks like all of your training has really paid off. I can't believe how much you improved in just a single week. It's 'cause of how much everyone helped. There's some truth to that, but I think your hard work played a bigger part. We saw you take action and push ahead in order to accomplish a goal. We could all stand to learn something from that. Heh! Well, working myself to the bone IS one of my redeeming features. But I'm gonna keep this up and get even stronger!

Episode 2

Cooking Class

Hey, Cleo! Teach me how to cook! Erm... Aw, c'mon! I made soba for everyone before, remember? How could I forget? *cough* Okay, yeah, I know that was terrible. But I can get better! C'mon, don't let me wander though life having everyone think of me as the lady who almost accidentally poisoned them. Take all your cooking knowledge and skills and smush 'em into my brain! Oh, very well. Our first lesson will be a gratin. I have no idea what that is, but OKAY! First, thinly slice onions and potatoes. Get ready for PAIN, onion! Hah! Hah! AAAAUGH MY EYES! I CAN'T SEEEEEE! I asked you to thinly slice the onions. Those are chunks. GENEROUS chunks. Yeah, so? They're way more fun to eat this way! Crunch for days! Please slice them thinly. The pieces will never cook all the way through otherwise. Ooooooh! THAAAAAT'S why you do it! Next, we will sauté the potatoes and onions until lightly browned. Right. Lemme just crank the heat up to eleven and throw those puppies in! Those are not lightly browned, Botan. Those are burnt. They may actually be ash. Yeah, I guess they are a bit crispy, huh? Still, that's better than being raw! Well, perhaps a deft touch with seasonings will cover up the flavor. Now then, turn off the heat, add the flour and butter, and mix. However, you only need to use— A bunch, right? That's a measurement. HAVE A BUNCH, GRATIN! HAH! Botan! A bucket is NOT the preferred method for measuring out flour! You must be exacting and precise. Aw, c'mon! It's fine to eyeball it, yeah? *sigh* I understand now why you are such a terrible cook. You rely far too much on approximation and...instinct. What's that supposed to mean?! The recipe is solid. If you follow it to the letter, the end result will be delicious. Your failures are created by deviating from the recipe whenever you decide something "looks about right" or else is "close enough." Yeah, but it's a huge pain to measure everything out with all those teeny little spoon dealies. Who needs that?! Recipes are all about mastering the basics of cooking. How can you improve if you refuse to master the basics? Fiiiine! Fine. You got me. Then let us try again—FOLLOWING the recipe this time. And so, Cleo hammered home the importance of recipes into Botan's mind. As a result... Well? What do you think? *nibble* It tastes just like the recipe. By which I mean it is delicious. Yay! I'm not terrible at cooking anymore! Surprisingly, you have an aptitude for it. So as long as you follow the instructions, I think your dishes can be successful. Speaking of which, there's something I want to talk to you about... Er, is Botan making dinner tonight? *gulp* Wipe that terrified look off your face, mister! I'm gonna restore my good name! Oh man, I'm gonna end up talkin' about this meal with a therapist... No worries, chum! I'm a changed woman. I taught her the basics. She will not fail if she follows my instructions. I won't make the same mistake I did last time. It's going to be GREAT! In that case, I'm looking forward to it. Then just sit back and wait for dinner! Pssst! Cleo! Are ya SURE about this? Shouldn't ya watch in case she mistakes the sugar for cyanide or somethin'? The only way she can restore her culinary good name is by succeeding alone. It's okay, Ranzal. Botan can do anything she puts her mind to. I still ain't sure about this, but let's go train so we can work up an appetite. A few hours later... Phew! I'm starving. Mmm... Dinner smells lovely. Hey, welcome back, guys! Er, so about dinner... Hey, there's soup on the table—and it actually looks GOOD! Ummm... Let us eat before it gets cold. Spoons up, everyone! Uuurgh... Oh wow, this is GREAT! Now I'm really looking forward to the next course. Hey, wait a sec. Where IS the next course? This is...um...all we have. Seriously? Just soup? I'm sooooorry! I taught you a great number of recipes, Botan. What happened? Well, I made the soup first, and I was SUPER careful to follow the recipe right down to the last teaspoon. I started cooking everything else and then concentrated back on the soup, and uh... Well, by the time the soup was done, everything else was kinda sorta...burnt. I see. You were so focused on one thing that you neglected everything else. Ugh! I want to crawl into a hole and die! You have a very analytical mind, which can sometimes cause a person to hone in on a single item. Don't let it get you down. We'll focus on multitasking during our next lesson. Thank you, Cleo. But I'm still responsible, so I'm going to eat this charred brick of food as punishment! No, Botan! I'll do it! B-but Ranzal, it's... Right now the walls of my empty belly are clangin' together, which is the best spice of all! Gimme! *chomp* Heh. It seems there's no need to worry, Botan; we've got someone more than happy to eat up your mistakes.

Episode 3

The Lost Cat

Botan is visiting a village after receiving a request for assistance... So you want me to find your cat? Yes! Her name's Mewmew, and she's a little cutie with gray fur and stripes. She went off into the woods and hasn't come back. I want to go look for her, but these old feet don't work so well. Leave it to me, madam! Hellooo, Mewmew! Heeere, kitty kitty! Oh! It's a cat with gray stripes! Are you Mewmew? Meow. Gotcha! Yaaaaaaah! MEOW?! Hey! Get back here! MRAAAAAAROW! Aw, man! Now she's hiding again. ...Anyway, she ran off and hid and now I can't find her. Got any bright ideas? Hmm. That's a tough one. Why don't I help ya?! I've got plenty of experience kitty huntin'. That is...not something I expected you to say. But sure, I'd love some help. First, yer gonna need some treats. Keep yer head low, yeah?! Don't want this furball to spot ya. I can smell your kitty snacks from here. Is the stench ever going to come off? The stronger the smell, the easier it is to attract a cat. And speakin' of, look! Meow! *sniff* *sniff* *CHOMP* Yes! She's eating 'em! Now let's catch— Wait! Don't move. All we're doin' today is givin' her a couple'a snacks. Whaaaat?! Why?! Cats are cautious. Ya gotta keep stuffin' the little critters with treats if ya wanna make 'em drop their guard. Uuuugh! That's sooooo tedious! Let's just catch her right now! And what happens if ya mess it up? We'll never find her then. A warrior must strike while the iron is hot! Look, yer eager. I get it. And that ain't necessarily bad. But there's a fine line between eager and impatient, yeah? Ugh! Fine, we'll do it your stupid way. So how long do we feed her, then? Four or five days should do the trick. Just gotta be patient! Operation Cat Trap: Day Two *munch* *chump* *horf* Hey there, kitty. Still hungry, eh? Now we move juuuust a bit closer so she can get a little more used to us. MRAOW?! ...Meow. *munch* *chomp* Look! She's totally used to us now! Let's throw a bag over her and take her back while she's distracted! She might look relaxed, but she ain't. We're just gonna sit and watch. Ugh. Operation Cat Trap: Day Three Meoooow! *purrrr* Okay, she's rolling over on her back. We HAVE to snag her now! Nope. That's a trick. If we try'n snag her, she'll bolt like a shot and all of our hard work will be for nothin'. UUUUUGH. Operation Cat Trap: Day Four Meeeeeoooow... Zzzzzz... Okay, this is just stupid. She's ASLEEP! We HAVE to grab her now! Cats sleep with one eye open, yeah? Just a little longer now. Be patient. UUUUUUGGGGGGHHHHH! Operation Cat Trap: Day Five *chomp* *munch* Meow meow meow! All right. Let's do this. About freakin' time! Sheesh! Whoa, whoa! Please tell me ya ain't just gonna leap outta the bushes and try to snag her! No, Ranzal. I'm not. I've been patient this long, so a little more won't hurt. Glad to hear it. Poor owner's probably worried sick about this little thing— be a real shame to screw it up now. C'meeeere, Mewmew. Heeeere, Mewmew. Meow? Hey kitty! We're your friends! Yeah, that's a good kitty... GRAAAAAAARGH! Hot pot of coffee! It's a fiend! Stay away from Mewmew, jerk! Haaaah! Graaaaaaagh... Where's Mewmew?! Is she okay?! She, uh... She ran off. DANGIT! DANGIT TO HECK! *sigh* I'm sorry, Ranzal. Skip the apologies. This ain't yer fault. We're never going to earn her trust back. Ya sure about that? Meow. Mewmew! You're back! *sniff* *sniff* *purrrr* Aw! She's...she's nuzzling me? It's because ya didn't chase her all over hell and breakfast. Cats are smart enough to know the difference between friend and fiend, after all. Ya saved her, and she knows it. Okay then, Mewmew. Let's go home. Meow!

Episode 4

Reconciliation

Our work here is done—which is good, because it's pretty late. Let's hurry home and... Huh? What's going on there? *sigh* Oy there, little lady! Things like you shouldn't be wanderin' about at night. *sigh* She ain't listenin' to us. Still, someone's gonna miss her—and pay 'andsomely for her safe return! Don't worry, miss—we'll take ya 'ome. Bwaaa ha ha ha! H-hey! Stop that! STOP RIGHT THERE! Buh?! Who the 'eck are you?! Oh, just some heavily armed passer-by. Looks like this woman doesn't want to go with you. The 'ell do we care what she wants?! You two clearly aren't the sharpest tools in the shed, so lemme lay this out for you real clear: Let her go, or I'm going to turn both of you into mincemeat. Tch! Let's get outta 'ere! Thank you, miss. Listen, you can't just be wandering around at night with your noggin in the clouds. I know. I just wanted to take in some night air and clear my head a little. Something bothering you? Listen, if you want to talk, I'm a pretty good listener. What do you say? Well, I had a fight with an old friend, and now we aren't speaking anymore. And the more I think about it, the more I realize how stupid the whole thing was. Then go find them and apologize! I think it's too late for that... He's setting out for a long journey at sea, you see, and he leaves at dawn. So he's in port? Yeah, that's quite a ways from here. Even if I start after him now, the ship will be gone by the time I arrive. There's nothing I can do... That's not true. You can write him a letter! How will that help? You may not be able to make it to port, but I'm fast. REALLY fast. If I run all night, I can get there just before his ship leaves. But...I couldn't ask you to do that. I WANT to do it. That's why I brought it up. I'll go with you, Botan. An extra sword will help on these dangerous roads. Heh. I feel safer already. Oh, thank you both! Right then! Put out your pinky. Er, why? Because we're making a pinky promise. That makes it totally unbreakable! On my pinky, I swear to deliver your letter. *pant pant* ...Man, running all night sure takes it out of a girl. But I can't rest! I have to deliver this letter before dawn! We should be at the port once we pass through this... Wha?! Fiends?! Oh, come on, SERIOUSLY?! There are too many for us to fight. But we don't have time to find a different route! Then I'll distract them while you slip past. I'll fend them off for a bit and then run. We'll meet up later at the port. Got it! Hey! Fiends! Come get me! All right, now's my chance... Aw, crumbles! There's still one here! And boy, does it look strong. GRRAAAGH! Sorry, fiend, but I gotta bolt. I have someone's message to deliver! And if you won't step aside, I'll just go THROUGH you! RAAAARGH! Yaaaaaaaah! The port. Afternoon. *pant* Oof. It took a lot longer than I thought to shake those fiends. Where's Botan? She should have arrived here before me. Heya, Euden! Botan! Thank goodness you're all right. But what about the letter? Right here. You still have it? So you didn't make it... Huh? Oh no, I delivered that one just fine! This is his response. He told me to give this to her along with a super heartfelt apology. Well, I'm glad they're able to make up. Yeah, me too. It'd be sad to think of two people spending the rest of their lives in some misunderstanding. Right then! Time to hit the road. I've got a letter to deliver. Don't you want to rest first? Reconciliation cannot wait! Besides, I only know one speed: FULL-ON CRAZY! Wooooo!

Episode 5

The Chosen Path

Hey! Yah! Hyaaaah! Pretty sharp moves there. I never miss a chance to train. Your movements are more composed than they were before. Yes, it seems both your body and mind have matured during your time here. Aw, stop. You'll make me blush. So not to kick you out the door, but wasn't the plan to go back to Hinomoto once you were stronger? Yep. And then I'm going to give Mr. Next Candidate for Shogun a good ol' slap on the back! So how strong are you trying to be? Hmm. You know, that's a good question. Stronger than Ieyasu, I guess. But how MUCH stronger...? Hmm... Uh, Botan? Hello? Graaargh! Hmmmmm... Botan! The fiend! Hmmmm... Buh? Ack! RAAAARGH! Hang on, Botan! Haaah! Grraaaaaarrr... Oh man! I'm really sorry, guys. I totally spaced there. Something's clearly been worrying you these past few days, Botan. What is it? Well, I know I'm stronger, right? But I don't know how MUCH stronger. My goal before was to defeat Ieyasu, but things are different now. At first I was doing this to help him, but now I feel like I want to be strong just to be strong, if that makes sense. Somewhere along the way, I think I lost sight of my actual goal. So, like, how strong do you have to be before you can say "Okay, I'm strong now"? I don't know the answer to that. I have many companions here in the castle, and each of them has their own kind of strength. I learn different things from them every day, but I'm still searching for my own answer to that question. Yeah, I guess that's not a question with a neat little answer, huh? *sigh* So am I okay? I mean, should I keep training here without a specific end goal? That's exactly what you should do. Even if you don't have an answer now, you'll eventually find it if you keep training and learning from all of us. You'll find what it is you want to be. Huh. I never thought of it like that. That evening... Botaaan! Heeeey, Botan! Where aaare yaaaaa?! Any luck over there? I'm afraid not. We've turned the Halidom upside down and haven't found even a whiff of her! It's very unlike her to wander away without even a word. Maybe she decided her trainin' was done and went back to Hinomoto? Or perhaps she no longer saw a point in training here. If so, I'm sad we couldn't help her. Wait, who's sad now? Botan! Hoo boy, look at the time! Didn't realize how late it was. Where have you been?! Wait, were you guys looking for me? Oh man, I'm sorry! I was looking for a merchant that was heading to Hinomoto, but I struck out. Why were you doing that? I wanted them to deliver a letter to my dojo and friends back in Hinomoto. I pray it was not an "expect me soon" sort of notice? What? No, no! It's not that at all. See, when I first came here I was just a huge ball of energy, but things kinda settled a little once I moved into your big castle. That's why I wanted to let everyone back home know that I'm gonna be working hard for you from now on. Wait, so you mean...? It was only when you said it to me that I realized it, Euden. I didn't know how strong I should be, or even how strong I WAS. But now I realize it's way better to just work as hard as I can and not worry about all that jazz! It's like you said: I'll find my answer if I just keep working with everyone here. I'll find the strength I want. Anyway, all that to say I'm gonna stick around for a while if you're cool with it. Wait, so yer stayin'? Dammit, I can't keep you straight sometimes! But in the end, we get to keep you here, and that's all that matters. We'll do everything we can to help you become whatever you want to be, Botan. Aw, thanks everybody. I can't wait!
