The flame of life that once burned<br>
bright within the sacred bird<br>
sputtered to a halt. And from the<br>
ashes, three Phoenix sisters arose.


Phoenix, maiden of reincarnation.<br>
Dark Phoenix, arbiter of lifespans.<br>
And Corsaint Phoenix, regenerant.


"Whether wound or illness, you need<br>
only speak what ails, and I will heal!<br>
Regeneration is my life; my calling!"<br>
Corsaint Phoenix quite liked her<br>
power, for it brought happiness to all.


But one day, Corsaint Phoenix<br>
was suddenly wracked with doubt.


"Is there meaning in regeneration?<br>
After all, no matter how many times<br>
someone is healed, death comes for<br>
us all in the end."


As the days passed, her heart<br>
wavered, and slowly did the<br>
seed of doubt begin to take root.<br>
Listless and negligent, she allowed a<br>
single life to slip through her fingers.


"Huh? I...failed?" Corsaint Phoenix<br>
was dumbfounded. "Worry not. I will<br>
help you." Phoenix had come along,<br>
and, unable to sit idly by, held a<br>
hand over the corpse.


In the blink of an eye, she restored<br>
life to the empty vessel. "A soul that<br>
could not be healed in life passes on,<br>
opening the door to reincarnation."<br>
Phoenix's tone was stern but gentle.


The notion further shrouded Corsaint<br>
Phoenix's heart in doubt.<br>
"What place does regeneration<br>
have when there exists a power<br>
so mighty as reincarnation?"


If her role was unnecessary, why<br>
should she persist in it? She chose to<br>
quit her work and live her own life.<br>
Without healing, disease spread,<br>
and death and sadness reigned.


She felt a rueful tickle at her heart,<br>
but resolved to turn a blind eye<br>
to the world's suffering all the same.


She walked on, traversing a stagnant<br>
river, a wild plain, and a wasted<br>
wood. And at the end of the<br>
wasteland, she came upon a lone<br>
foal, fallen and exhausted.


She alone could help this animal,<br>
abandoned and in need. Reluctantly,<br>
Corsaint Phoenix used her power of<br>
regeneration on the foal. Its vitality<br>
restored, it posed her a question.


"Thank you, miss. I am all alone.<br>
Are...you alone, too?" Corsaint<br>
Phoenix nodded. Each had drunk<br>
deeply of solitude's bitter draught.<br>
They grew close in no time at all.


They were inseparable. When the foal<br>
fell ill, she healed it immediately. And<br>
before she realized it, the foal had<br>
grown into an old horse. Their days<br>
passed without incident.


Yet even the happiest times must<br>
eventually come to an end. And on<br>
one winter day like so many before,<br>
Corsaint Phoenix was faced with<br>
an immutable principle.

Unable to find meaning in her power<br>
of regeneration, Corsaint Phoenix<br>
cast aside her role and lived freely.


Treading the path of freedom, she<br>
befriended a lone horse, and the two<br>
shared many joyful years together.<br>
However...


One harsh winter, the old horse was<br>
stricken with illness. As always,<br>
Corsaint Phoenix tried to heal it, but<br>
try as she might, the horse's suffering<br>
would not recede.


With fear festering in the pit of her<br>
stomach, she tried once more to use<br>
her power of regeneration. And yet<br>
the illness would not abate,<br>
and instead only grew worse.


"Why? Why won't you get better?<br>
I have nothing to my name save this<br>
power of regeneration, and now<br>
even that is wrested from my grasp?"


The horse stood on the precipice of<br>
death, its illness fatal. Corsaint<br>
Phoenix broke down in tears. As she<br>
did, the horse looked upon her and<br>
smiled gently, speaking thus:


"This malady will soon take me,<br>
but grieve not. I have lived a long<br>
enough life, and my happiness<br>
has been immeasurable."


"While I cannot stay with you any<br>
longer, my memory will live on within<br>
you forever. May it be the key to<br>
unshackle your burdened heart."


These were the horse's last words.<br>
Only its lifeless body remained.<br>
Corsaint Phoenix wept as she<br>
rushed back to Phoenix's side.


"Please, reincarnate this horse! I wish<br>
to speak with it once more, no matter<br>
the cost! Please, I'll do anything!"


In light of this extraordinary situation,<br>
Phoenix set to her task. The horse's<br>
soul returned in the form of a foal,<br>
and Corsaint Phoenix wept once<br>
again—this time with joy.


"Who are you, miss?"


Corsaint Phoenix was frozen in place.<br>
The life before her was wholly new.<br>
No trace of the horse's old memories<br>
remained in the reincarnated foal.


"I finally understand. The power<br>
of reincarnation is no substitute<br>
for the power of regeneration.<br>
Yet my friend's memory lives<br>
on...in my heart alone."


All life meets its end eventually.<br>
Yet regeneration is far from futile.<br>
Armed with a new sense of purpose,<br>
Corsaint Phoenix resumed her duty.


To this day, the white dragon carries<br>
a precious memory of a dear friend:<br>
A memory of a horse, galloping over<br>
a distant plain, transcending time<br>
through the threshold to her heart.
