Ebisu and Daikokuten were two 
dragons from Hinomoto—and for 
as long as anyone could remember, 
one had been chasing the other.

Day after day, Ebisu pursued 
Daikokuten. He hoped that his 
attempts, however futile, would 
narrow the distance between them— 
that they might become friends.

But Ebisu's dogged—catted?—pursuit 
always left Daikokuten perturbed, 
and despite Ebisu's best efforts, 
they remained as distant as ever.

But one day, as the year drew 
to a close, Amaterasu, ruler 
of Hinomoto's dragons, issued 
a sudden proclamation.

The first 12 dragons to come and visit 
her at the beginning of the following 
year would be given important ranks, 
in the order they came calling.

Ebisu saw this as an opportunity. 
Were he to be chosen as one of the 
twelve, Daikokuten would surely 
be forced to acknowledge him.

The night of New Year's eve came, 
and dragons from all over Hinomoto 
rushed to see Amaterasu. Daikokuten 
was among them...but Ebisu was not.

On frigid nights, it is feline instinct to 
curl up at home...and Ebisu, ever 
the cat-napper, overslept. When he 
finally stirred awake and rushed to 
Amaterasu, disbelief took hold.

Daikokuten had been chosen as one 
of the twelve. Ebisu had long chased 
him, hoping to close the distance 
between them...but now Daikokuten 
was further away than ever.

Later, he began to hear rumors that 
their game of cat and mouse had 
made Daikokuten faster, helping 
him arrive at Amaterasu's shrine 
long before the other dragons.

Ebisu was so frustrated, he decided 
to pull a prank on Daikokuten...but 
his resolve failed him. This was all 
his fault. No amount of chasing could 
close the gap between them now.

Ebisu was no longer chasing him, 
but Daikokuten kept moving further 
and further ahead. Sadness and 
frustration rose within Ebisu's heart.

Years passed, until one day, 
a sulky Ebisu learned that 
Daikokuten would be delivering 
blessings to a foreign land as 
Hinomoto's representative.

All of the feelings Ebisu had been 
bottling up inside burst free. 
He couldn't forgive Daikokuten— 
and so he stole the blessings his 
rival was supposed to be delivering.

Ebisu had longed to become friends 
with Daikokuten, but the two of them 
only drifted further apart. In a final 
move of desperation, Ebisu stole the 
blessings Daikokuten was to deliver.

In the end, Ebisu was punished for 
his error, and scolded by people 
and dragons alike—Daikokuten 
himself among the outraged.

To make amends, Ebisu agreed to 
help deliver the blessings. He spread 
happiness far and wide, drinking 
deep of it himself...and for the first 
time in ages, he knew peace.

Once the blessings had been 
delivered, a joyful Ebisu looked 
up at the moon. Suddenly, a lone 
figure approached him. 
It was Daikokuten.

Ebisu was shocked. It was the first 
time Daikokuten had come to him, 
rather than the other way 'round.

A sheepish Daikokuten looked 
away from Ebisu as he spoke. 
"There's something I've been 
meaning to apologize for..."

It was that New Year's Eve so long 
ago, when they had competed to 
be the first to greet Amaterasu. 
Daikokuten had noticed Ebisu was 
absent, but hadn't gone back for him.

"I should have gone and 
woken you up. I'm sorry." 
 
But Daikokuten's apology 
fell on deaf ears.

It wasn't that Ebisu was refusing to 
listen. He was just too surprised by 
how little Daikokuten had changed.

All this time, he had been convinced 
the distance between them was too 
wide for him to ever catch up—and 
yet it was as if not a day had passed 
since Ebisu had started chasing him.

He finally realized that there 
hadn't been any real distance 
between them to begin with— 
and HE was the one who had 
turned his back on Daikokuten.

Ebisu couldn't help but laugh. 
"A-are you laughing? If you're gonna 
be like that, then I'm leaving!" 
"Wait! Wait!"

Thus did the chase begin anew— 
but the two of them were content. 
Their relationship was the same as 
ever...and the game was once again 
afoot.
