The flame of life that once burned 
bright within the sacred bird 
sputtered to a halt. And from the 
ashes, three Phoenix sisters arose.

Phoenix, maiden of reincarnation. 
Dark Phoenix, arbiter of lifespans. 
And Corsaint Phoenix, regenerant.

"Whether wound or illness, you need 
only speak what ails, and I will heal! 
Regeneration is my life; my calling!" 
Corsaint Phoenix quite liked her 
power, for it brought happiness to all.

But one day, Corsaint Phoenix 
was suddenly wracked with doubt.

"Is there meaning in regeneration? 
After all, no matter how many times 
someone is healed, death comes for 
us all in the end."

As the days passed, her heart 
wavered, and slowly did the 
seed of doubt begin to take root. 
Listless and negligent, she allowed a 
single life to slip through her fingers.

"Huh? I...failed?" Corsaint Phoenix 
was dumbfounded. "Worry not. I will 
help you." Phoenix had come along, 
and, unable to sit idly by, held a 
hand over the corpse.

In the blink of an eye, she restored 
life to the empty vessel. "A soul that 
could not be healed in life passes on, 
opening the door to reincarnation." 
Phoenix's tone was stern but gentle.

The notion further shrouded Corsaint 
Phoenix's heart in doubt. 
"What place does regeneration 
have when there exists a power 
so mighty as reincarnation?"

If her role was unnecessary, why 
should she persist in it? She chose to 
quit her work and live her own life. 
Without healing, disease spread, 
and death and sadness reigned.

She felt a rueful tickle at her heart, 
but resolved to turn a blind eye 
to the world's suffering all the same.

She walked on, traversing a stagnant 
river, a wild plain, and a wasted 
wood. And at the end of the 
wasteland, she came upon a lone 
foal, fallen and exhausted.

She alone could help this animal, 
abandoned and in need. Reluctantly, 
Corsaint Phoenix used her power of 
regeneration on the foal. Its vitality 
restored, it posed her a question.

"Thank you, miss. I am all alone. 
Are...you alone, too?" Corsaint 
Phoenix nodded. Each had drunk 
deeply of solitude's bitter draught. 
They grew close in no time at all.

They were inseparable. When the foal 
fell ill, she healed it immediately. And 
before she realized it, the foal had 
grown into an old horse. Their days 
passed without incident.

Yet even the happiest times must 
eventually come to an end. And on 
one winter day like so many before, 
Corsaint Phoenix was faced with 
an immutable principle.

Unable to find meaning in her power 
of regeneration, Corsaint Phoenix 
cast aside her role and lived freely.

Treading the path of freedom, she 
befriended a lone horse, and the two 
shared many joyful years together. 
However...

One harsh winter, the old horse was 
stricken with illness. As always, 
Corsaint Phoenix tried to heal it, but 
try as she might, the horse's suffering 
would not recede.

With fear festering in the pit of her 
stomach, she tried once more to use 
her power of regeneration. And yet 
the illness would not abate, 
and instead only grew worse.

"Why? Why won't you get better? 
I have nothing to my name save this 
power of regeneration, and now 
even that is wrested from my grasp?"

The horse stood on the precipice of 
death, its illness fatal. Corsaint 
Phoenix broke down in tears. As she 
did, the horse looked upon her and 
smiled gently, speaking thus:

"This malady will soon take me, 
but grieve not. I have lived a long 
enough life, and my happiness 
has been immeasurable."

"While I cannot stay with you any 
longer, my memory will live on within 
you forever. May it be the key to 
unshackle your burdened heart."

These were the horse's last words. 
Only its lifeless body remained. 
Corsaint Phoenix wept as she 
rushed back to Phoenix's side.

"Please, reincarnate this horse! I wish 
to speak with it once more, no matter 
the cost! Please, I'll do anything!"

In light of this extraordinary situation, 
Phoenix set to her task. The horse's 
soul returned in the form of a foal, 
and Corsaint Phoenix wept once 
again—this time with joy.

"Who are you, miss?"

Corsaint Phoenix was frozen in place. 
The life before her was wholly new. 
No trace of the horse's old memories 
remained in the reincarnated foal.

"I finally understand. The power 
of reincarnation is no substitute 
for the power of regeneration. 
Yet my friend's memory lives 
on...in my heart alone."

All life meets its end eventually. 
Yet regeneration is far from futile. 
Armed with a new sense of purpose, 
Corsaint Phoenix resumed her duty.

To this day, the white dragon carries 
a precious memory of a dear friend: 
A memory of a horse, galloping over 
a distant plain, transcending time 
through the threshold to her heart.
