"You are Andromeda."

With those words, I awakened. 
I had no memories before this. 
I did not even know who I was. 
That was why I clung to the words.

I am Andromeda, maiden most pure, 
who offered up herself in exchange 
for peace. I am she who took 
responsibility for the sins of our world.

And I am a dragon, one used as an 
experiment by the hated Syndicate. 
A dragon called Andromeda. 
I am me.

That knowledge was how I kept my 
sense of self. Without it, my mind 
would have shattered long ago.

The Syndicate's foul experiments 
brought about a not-insignificant 
loss of life, but I did not know what 
to think when I looked upon those 
who had suffered so.

Should I be sad? Should I feel rage? 
Ought I to grieve? Even the simplest 
of answers eluded me, for I did not 
know how Andromeda would think.

This was how much I lacked a sense 
of self. A sense of..."me."

And then, the hand of salvation 
was extended to me.

With a burst of flame and a roar, 
the building of my Syndicate captors 
was rent asunder. Just like that, 
my prison was no more.

I was frightened of the ferocious 
arm that wrought such destruction. 
But I also felt pity for the owner, 
for within the depths of his hate-filled 
eyes, I also saw great sadness.

Man and dragon. Hate and grief. 
Had I not looked deep into his eyes, 
I could not have taken his hand.

I was trapped by the Syndicate with 
no memories or will of my own. 
I could do nothing but cling to the 
words of others—until the moment 
he extended his hand to me.

It was sudden, his appearance. 
As the walls of my prison came 
tumbling down, he turned to me 
and said but four simple words: 
"Run if you want."

No one had ever asked of my wants. 
I had never considered them. 
And so, as a baby bird imprints on 
the first thing it sees, I followed the 
young man outside and to freedom.

He, too, was an experiment of the 
Syndicate. His family had been killed 
by them, and so he swore revenge. 
In the time that followed, we chased 
them to many shadowy places.

In truth, I envied him. No matter how 
sad or bitter his memories, at least he 
had them. But me? I had...nothing. 
No memories. No passion. Not even 
the conviction that I was myself.

When I expressed these concerns, 
he said, "Legends say Andromeda is 
a selfless maiden with love and 
affection for all. One who wouldn't 
balk at sacrificing herself for others."

But that wasn't me. I knew that the 
moment I stepped into the world. 
It had a mountain of beautiful things 
in it, and an equal number of 
unseemly ones.

To love those things with equal 
affection was beyond me—but 
Andromeda would be different. 
The dragon of affection would 
surely show love to all.

"You're not like the legends," he said. 
That was my greatest fear— 
that something would make me realize 
I wasn't Andromeda. That I wasn't me.

But in the depths of my despair, 
he said, "The real thing isn't 
the legend, you know?"

"Normally, I think that if you acted 
in a way counter to the legends, 
that the legends were wrong. 
The legends aren't you. 
You BECOME the legends."

"So whatever you do becomes 
who Andromeda really is."

His blunt words cut to the bone. 
It truly was that simple.

I am who I am. I am unable to be 
totally selfless, unable to love all, 
and unable to forgive the Syndicate 
who stole everything from me. 
And yet...

I AM Andromeda.
